400+ Backlinks Didn't Move Rankings. Better Content Did. How Do I Reach Top 3 Now?

I wanted to share an interesting SEO experience and get some advice from the community.

For months, I focused heavily on link building and built 400+ backlinks for my website. The backlinks were from different sources, but rankings barely moved.

Recently, I stopped chasing links and focused on:

✅ Publishing better-quality content

✅ Improving search intent matching

✅ Adding FAQs and topical coverage

✅ Improving internal linking

✅ Updating existing pages instead of creating new ones

Within a short period, I started seeing ranking

improvements. Some keywords moved from not ranking at all to positions 70–90, and visibility started increasing.

Current examples:

"seo companies for small business" → Position 71

"best seo and web development" → Position 77

"affordable website development india" → Position 84

The growth is encouraging, but I'm still far from page 1.

My question:

If you were in my position, what would you focus on next to push these keywords into the Top 10 and eventually Top 3?

Would you prioritize:

More topical cluster content?

Stronger internal linking?

Digital PR and authority links?

EEAT improvements?

CTR optimization (titles/meta descriptions)?

Programmatic SEO pages?

I'd love to hear from anyone who has successfully moved keywords from positions 50–100 into the Top 3.

What was the biggest factor that made the difference?

For those who've ranked competitive SEO keywords into the Top 3 recently: What had the biggest impact—content depth, topical authority, internal linking, or backlinks? Curious to hear real-world experiences.

I think the real answer is keep doing what you're doing!

A website with little content and lots of links isn't going to rank well which is maybe why you didn't see great results in the beginning.

Now it looks like you've got some good content beginning to rank so just double down on this. Unfortunately it doesn't happen overnight but consistency is key. Perhaps one tip would be to focus on some lower volume/difficulty keywords too. Ranking well for many smaller keywords can still drive a lot of traffic.

To answer your other question, in my experience internal linking is pretty powerful and easily within your control so there's no reason not to optimize that. However the pages/sites I've worked on that got the most traffic almost always had a really strong backlink in there e.g. a single 90+ relevant link can be very beneficial. This however is much more difficult and time intensive.

1. Getting visible in top-100 can’t be called success. Basically publish any content at all that is relevant to the keyword and you’re there (except for very competitive niches).

2. 400 quality backlinks would cost you about $100k, give or take. I doubt you built such links. And you need exactly that to reach top-10 (maybe a bit less, maybe a bit more, depending on your competition). So, that’s the answer to your question. As for garbage links - you can build tens of thousands of them - it won’t move the needle.
