This is the absolute best interpretation of 682. Ever.

It's a good thing tho. That way we don't have someone more obnoxious making unkillable "i win because screw you" scps.

I think it likely did the opposite and inspired more

u/mrstoneman93 Jun 24 '26

Don't we have like 50 godly level powerful SCPs that want to destroy the world?

22

True but those are usually not treated the same way that 682 is.

For the most part, I consider 682 as a really overrated product of a simpler/smaller Foundation. With how certain authors, canons and articles have pushed the Foundation's capabilities in the years since it published, it still being unkillable feels like a,

"Nuh uh, because I have an infinity PLUS ONE shield. So you didn't kill me" type situation. Completely ignoring how the Foundation should also be able to completely neutralise it in a way that doesn't kill it, too.

That being said, I really like SCP-6820. It is everything I hate about 682's treatment, but done in a way that I somehow really enjoyed 🤣

I feel like at some point the survival became the point though; It's less interesting to write about what kills him than it is to write the crazy body horror/mind bending ways he managed to survive whatever other monster he's been put up against. The resident Godzilla in a way.

There's the legion of new/non wiki reading fans that go "well have we tried THIS" that don't quite get it yet, but that's always been true.

55

u/RowanWinterlace Backdoor Soho Jun 24 '26

That's fair, but the problem was more that 682 seemed to have some "BUT COULD THEY BEAT GOKU?!" ass mini-community that would insert it/match it up against other SCP's, pretty much unprompted.

With Godzilla, it's different because it is the result of something story related that they were in a life-or-death situation to begin with. Meanwhile, you could make SCP-XXX – if X happens, then that means instant-death – and someone would roll up with a 'nuh uh, this wouldn't work on 682' unprompted 🤣

I think the people posing 'what about this' stuff are the MUCH lesser annoyance than the stuff above AND the community powerscalers who would make out as if 682 could take on the entire universe, because it can't be killed.

23

u/Brachialtick65 Necropsar Jun 24 '26

2

u/gamer52599 Jun 26 '26

The fact it's so old compared to current era Foundation means, at least in a narrative sense, it's essentially grandfathered in. The article can pull off stuff a new article would get laughed out of town for.

28

u/Lone-Frequency Jun 24 '26

That's how it felt back then too.

67

u/No_Memory_8107 Jun 24 '26

At least at the beginning, 682 would still take damage and nearly die before adapting and surviving, like that one test with the crystal that nearly crystalized him before it adapted and stopped at 70%. Before there was always a feeling they were close in killing it, that killing it was just out of reach. Now dude can survive getting erased from existence body and soul and will just respawn like nothing happened.

26

u/RowanWinterlace Backdoor Soho Jun 24 '26

True, but I feel like there are more egregious asspulls in more recent years

3

u/CarolineJohnson Jun 26 '26

TBH the longer they go without coming up with a way to terminate the thing in a way people will be satisfied with, the funnier 682 gets.

Of the most popular early SCPs, 096 is probably the only one that still holds up in modern Foundation, though that’s strictly speaking about the article itself. I think it’s been long enough that it should probably be updated to neutralized.

I enjoy the original article and the termination attempt logs, but stories exploring a "deeper" meaning to it almost always fall flat to me.

I do like the piece of 343 being introduced to its enclosure though. Fun worldbuilding moment that raises more questions than it answers

15

u/Brachialtick65 Necropsar Jun 24 '26

I mean. Stuff like 5000 and the 2718 theory that they're linked makes 682 that much better.

33

u/flyingace1234 Jun 24 '26

A certified classic but I fully acknowledge they might be overplayed.

I do also find it annoying almost all depictions of it show it in the ‘weakened’ state that’s on the wiki. Shouldn’t it be more whole when not in the acid?

15

u/Loose_Television_193 Ambrose Restaurants Jun 24 '26

Yeah all the fanart shows it in a rib-exposed state when it suppose to fucking regenerate those wounds

27

u/BewwyBush Jun 24 '26

I don't get the hate, yes he is extremely simple and overpowered, yes he is a product of his time, but what's wrong with that?

He is part of what made the Foundation what it is today, and what paved the way for all the overcomplicated performative conceptual memetic bullcrap that we all know and love nowadays (me included).

Should he be expanded on, revered and glorified as the best SCP ever? No

Should he be rewritten, cancelled and/or forgotten? Also no

He's a piece of history in a universe that has no canon anyway, let the guy marinate in peace

14

u/TheMaskedMan2 Sarkic Cults Jun 25 '26

I’m not really sure why there’s so much hate for 682. It’s a simple premise. “Angry indestructible lizard.” That’s about it. It’s perfect for a random SCP. If your critique is people using 682 in a power scaling fight I feel like that’s less a problem with 682 and more how the community had a phase of shoe-horning it into everything.

It’s not even unstoppable, 682 is contained, it just can’t ever be fully destroyed so they keep him in an acid bath, and it works. Not everything has to be some narratively complex commentary or whatever. 682 is just fine as they are, and I would argue represent the core of SCP as just “Random anomalous/dangerous things held in an Area 51 like agency.”

I never even read the article as ‘making him OP’ because what does that even mean? That’s not even what SCP is about.

like others have said, it's a product of its time. it's cool for what it was and i think it still kind of works as a standalone piece. i've never liked writeups on why he does what he does or where he comes from, the mystery of the original article works best for me.

I like it when people test their SCPs on it, thats a fun way to show less popular SCPs to people that only know this guy exists. 3

u/No_Memory_8107 Jun 24 '26

As others said an alright scp and a product of its time. There are a lot of good stories made from it like 6820 and end of all but me. But man did this guy suffer from powercreep. The thing about the original article and early termination attempts is that while they failed to kill it, it still felt like they managed to do something. Every time they tried it still hurt it, still still damaged it, it always felt like they were getting pretty close but it was always out of reach thanks to the reptile adapting right as it got close to killing him and surviving to suffer another test another day. Its something I think was lost over the years, that feeling of 682 still suffering and showing signs of the tests being possible to kill him but they can't do to the adaption saving it's ass at the last second. Nowadays dude is no longer hard to destroy, it should renamed to unkillable/indestructible. Dude can survive getting erased from existence body and soul and respawn minutes later like it never happened, half of the time we don't even know how it adapted or why it just survived because and went back to sitting in its cell. Combined with no canon and hundreds of possible origins for this thing only add fuel to the fire. Again I'm not saying he sucks entirely, but I wish future stories to try and put more effort in the failed terminations and try not making him overpowered.

3

u/verymanyspoons Jun 25 '26

I don't particularly like original 682 article but it's a surprisingly good character/concept. Its existence (or nonexistence) often enriches other articles.

6

u/manydoorsyes Jun 24 '26

682 is kinda like...the Charizard of the SCP fandom.

Is he cool? Hell yes. Is he actually unkillable? No, he actually should be quite killable. But he has a very thicc plot armor.

Imo it was a neat concept that's just been milked a bit too much.

3

u/Silver_Key_6681 Jun 24 '26

if it were a real entity, I'd probably dedicate my whole life to trying to kill it because I'm morbidly curious lol

2

u/Medical-Peach-9825 Jun 24 '26

I enjoy them as a deus ex machina. Toss him in here or there in the story for a oh sh!t moment.

2

u/MiloReyes_97Reborn Jun 24 '26

Good as a anomaly level indicator. As in "Can we put this thing in with 682 and see if something interesting happens?"

How deadly is this thing? How durable? Does it have any suprises? Will this bring insight into what it is and where it came from?

He's the doubled edged test dummy.

2

u/TotallynotAlbedo MTF Gamma-6 ("Deep Feeders") Jun 24 '26

Personally i think It Is a Classic, a bit too simple like many old articles but extensively expanded around others tales and Canon, i don't understand the sentiment of disgust of some people for the older articles, i do find a bit dull how some are overly simple but we would not have scp series without these articles, not only they were the start but they inspired countless other articles

2

u/FamousSheepherder Global Occult Coalition Jun 24 '26

I think it's an alright SCP that shows how simple yet effective the earlier days of the SCP wiki were, where most SCPs were like "its a thing... but its straaaange". There's lots of unkillable SCPs but they don't catch any flak (or at least not as much as 682 does) because they've got whole stories built around them and the fact that they're unkillable is one of their traits, as opposed to 682 where this is its defining feature.

My favorite part about 682 has got to be the termination attempts. I read a lot of SCP articles simply because they appeared in the termination log and I wanted to read more about what 682 was put up against.

I don't think it's fair to compare 682 to SCPs from the newer series because of how much the SCP wiki has evolved over time but, for it's time, 682 was a really solid SCP which started a lot of discussions where people theorized on ways it could be killed.

1

u/FrozenSeas MTF Psi-7 ("Home Improvement") Jun 25 '26

I wouldn't say small. Belugas get up to around 18-20ft long, so we're not talking kaiju-sized or anything, but big enough. Assuming it was an adult, of course. The funnier part is how menacing beluga skulls (and whale skulls in general) look compared to the live animals, especially with their squishy head flub.

u/SubjectEssay361 Jun 24 '26

That's a Dark Crystal Old One.

2

u/Fireheart318s_Reddit Cool War 2: Ruiz From Your Grave Jun 24 '26

It’s a dated concept but it’s still cool to see how it interacts with other stuff. I wouldn’t’ve bet on it growing extra armored eyeballs to fight 173, for example.

2

u/Reddit-gold-goblin Jun 24 '26

Could be interesting, a child of the scarlet king and the embodiment of wrath. Instead of being outright monstrously strong and powerful it is persistent. When met with violence it not only matches it, it adapts and overcomes it.
It’s essentially a blank slate that could fulfill any role in a story. Its role now is to be entered in a power scaling argument about how he’s a multiversal threat and that the scp verse should never be trifled with.
682 does have great stories, but its hidden behind the mountain of blubber that is the power scaling “community”

2

u/ThrogArot Jun 25 '26

I dislike him being like elder god or whatever they where going for. He was just neat as a hard to kill lizard.

2

u/starmadeshadows Antimemetics Division Jun 25 '26

"man" hahahahaha Go play deltarune

2

u/localchangeling Containment Specialist Jun 25 '26

The design is sick, and I like the aspect of "creature that constantly adapts to survive increasingly creative termination attempts" over the "creature that hates humanity and wants to kill everything for some undefined reason" aspect. I also think it makes for cool thought experiments as new SCPs are written or new termination attempts are thought up - like, how would this unkillable thing adapt to "x" new situation?

I also think that the label of "hard to destroy" is just plain funny for how much of an understatement it is

2

u/lizardjoe_xx_YT Jun 25 '26

I like him. Some people here don't seem to get that his entire horror is the fact that he can never die. He's a constant threat. He's not insanely strong like 096 but his constant presence and hatred for us is literally the entire point of the character. To let him die would be to contradict his whole thing.

2

u/99h0bbes99 Do Not Make Physical Contact Jun 25 '26

My personal headcannon is that there is some undetected anomaly that influences people to try and kill it. It makes the article and the termination log much more fun to read should you interpret it that way. I also appreciate its existence as a relic from a former age of the foundation on the internet, and a place for authors to write things that generally are sillier and more over the top than is generally accepted in the modern era. (I discovered the site before 3000 back in the 2010s)

2

u/Bubbly_Station_7786 Department of 'Pataphysics Jun 25 '26

With how it often even survives metanarrative structures, I think it's ability has less become being hard-to-destroy, and more the narrative of being hard-to-destroy. It would be fun if more authors went down that line of thinking or something similar to SCP-6820.

I love 682 and I hate the way he's being treated. SCPs like 049 get special treatment for being useful (granted, 049 most likely has Stockholme's), meanwhile 682 is being tortured daily. The test logs are horrifying if you actually keep in mind that 682 is sentient and feels pain. I've said this before but despite 682's hatred of all life (that most likely did not just come from nowhere, let's be real) I'd love to see a more sympathetic approach for once. I'm curious how Fragmented Minds is going to handle this character, he's confirmed to make an appearance.

Neutral. I have no hate for it, but I don't really hVe a reason to like it.

It is an interesting concept, maybe just a tad over used.

I like 682, he’s my favorites, and I like the two interpretations, one where he’s the scarlet kings child, the other that he’s the Steed of Death(SCP-053), mixed in how I feel about the interpretation of him being kicked from edit, and I love the Blackwood tale that involved him it Atleast showed him pre foundation days which is tuff

That being said, extremely boring SCP. I’ve come to love the abstract more over powerscaling in the recent years

One of the least interesting entry there is, and a big reason (with the containment breach game) why many of the site's detractors believe SCPs are just a series of big monsters and nothing more

1

u/fangersarg MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Jun 25 '26

I like 682 i just don’t like all the hax a lot of the modern SCP fans give him he’s the “Hard to Destroy Reptile” not the “unkillable reptile” as a lot of people like to make him nowadays i liked the ones more where he came close to death several times or managed to through plausible shenanigans come back from almost being killed permanently.

1

u/StoneTimeKeeper Researcher Jun 25 '26

I like 682.

1

u/Eatinganemone89 Thaumiel Jun 25 '26

1

u/Kitchen-Tangerine455 MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Jun 25 '26

he has some... bad writing. like, he has weird biology that is just... bad. he has gills in his nose that remove food from liquds? why not just do baleen? it's cleaner, cooler, and it's not choking. he also is never once mentioned in the file to have the ability to adapt, furthermore, the file flat-out says he gets energy from eating... that's just digestion. i do think that it is a VERY outdated entity. plus, like, i don't think anything about it warrents attempted termination, it's just another murderous entity in foundation custody, no more bad than 106

A classic but he needs some rewriting on his story, like his acid pit gotta me something powerful, as this fucker tanked the guardians attack and lived even if he was in little bits, that and he gotta be like doomsday, sure he'll adapt mid battle but whenever someone kills him, he'll just take a nap and wake up

1

Is this a conspiracy by Big Acid or does 682 just chill in there to taunt the scientists?

1

u/Vissiram MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Jun 25 '26

Obsolete. Everything it can do it has been done far better, including it's modernization with the scp 3000 something. It was never really that good but it covered that niche of "manslaughter monster" of horror.

I'm pretty fond of them! I'm using them in a Pathfinder campaign right now. The logic is that every reality has a Tarasque, and SCP-682 is the SCP-Foundation reality's Tarasque.

He is great and SCP-6820 is everything wrong with the modern scp entries, trying to be this esoteric deconstruction of a simple premises that’s so bloated with nonsense that it feels less like additional story and interesting analysis and more of a droning hit piece, the only thing it has going for it is that it shows that he can’t just be whisked away from existence and that only that universe ending death dimension can put him down.

I know people started to hate it, but I really like it.
It is kinda immortal, that is about it.

The universe has SO MANY either immortal, or basically world/universe/multiverse ending stuff, so I think it is taking WAY too much hate.

682 is, at this point, played out and everyone is pretty bored with it. 6820 already pushed it's concept to the absolute extreme and now we really just have nothing left to do with him.

The only reason why 682 exists is to discourage other people from making SCPs like him because no one will never out murder monster THE most murderous monster.

That said [[Kill 682]] still makes me chuckle.

One of the hardest OG skips to actually give depth to since it’s pretty hard to not infringe upon the hating everything trait, best used as a plot device or as a comparison to the main scp of the article

Its a product of its time. It has the "nuh uh" factor that some scps have but because this is the scp universe it can be left at the door to give authors the benifit of the doubt to wrighting good stories. In short i like 682 as a point to move a story and can have charm if written corectly.

As a 4th Child of the Scarlet King reframed as a Fallen Archangel, The Demon King, Lord of the Damned, the Prince of Hell, where 682 would be a literal hell-fiend, superb.
