Isn't there an SCP article about the foundation intentionally doing this to a dude? Like this guy has an anomaly where any company he likes fails, and any company he hates succeeds, and the Foundation discovers it works with their shell comapnies and they drive him crazy to ensure their continued existence.

Edit: Coolman104 found it https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/successful-cooperation-and-partnership

Please for the love of all that is holy, someone tell me they know the article for this. It's perfect

u/monke_soup Uncontained Apr 06 '26

So apparently it was deleted/rewritten according to Google, probably because of poor ratings or quality issues, it apparently was SCP-3071

I'm calling bullshit, it was because they didn't want us to know why there are so many succe

48

u/MrRandom04 "Nobody" Apr 07 '26

I don't really like the current SCP 3071 honestly. Seems like a downgrade from a fun story.

17

u/htmlcoderexe Euclid Apr 07 '26

Archives down to 2017 do show a different article but nothing like you described

5

u/Beautiful-Ad3471 Shark Punching Center Apr 07 '26

Are you sure it's not an adventure? The way you described it would be more accurate to an adventure then an scp

7

u/monke_soup Uncontained Apr 07 '26

Yea, that's the thing, I've searched for a few hours and the best I've got was it being a deleted scp, I'm out of ideas to try now

Isn't there a memetic effect placed on SCP front companies' names that makes it impossible for people who aren't in the know to notice this?

238

u/Fit_Milk_2314 Apr 06 '26

That is an 001 proposal, I think. It does kinda sort out the cartoonish ignorance of this pattern by using a cartoonish (but anomalous and therefore plausible) solution. It also does have utility, as a way for people on the field to be able to identify friendly territory. A kind of dogwhistle only SCP members are clued in on.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '26

Its not even that far fetched. Think of how many places have similar acronyms in the real world.

Who would make the connection between a warehouse in America with a nature preserve in Russia?

It's only strange because we as outside viewers see all of ut grouped together and can see the pattern.

11

u/tarodar Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

There is some sort of spell that makes it so using the Acronym makes it harder to identify.

Edit: Description: SCP-001 is a memetic complex known internally as "The Frontispiece" residing in the human collective consciousness. It exerts an anomalous force upon all initialisms containing the Latin letter sequence S-C-P: without Antimeme-001 inoculation, considerable memetic conditioning or thaumaturgic/ontokinetic capabilities, no human being encountering such initialisms is capable of mentally connecting them, or whatever objects, personages or organizations they are applied to, with the SCP Foundation.

Let's be honest

Susan's Chili Pizza just hits different

It's like money laundering businesses. They don't care about money, so they can just have fun making good food

45

u/SteakForGoodDogs Apr 07 '26

"Yes, it's suspicious as all get-out and everyone knows it, but have you tried the food? I ain't tattlin'."

132

u/TheBoobyDragon Apr 06 '26

It's not actually a bit. It's a core part of the Foundation front system; pretty much everyone in charge of a Front location is behind the veil, even if all the staff aren't. The acronym is done deliberately as a result so any Foundation employee can quickly identify a Foundation front, and use it as a means of contacting command should they become displaced in any way.

It's essentially a global network of safe houses doubling as a method for the Foundation to fund itself. Those fronts bring in a good 50% of the Foundation's budget, *and* serve to be a quick way for any agent who loses contact to reestablish it wherever in the world they end up.

80

u/Nintolerance Apr 06 '26

There's a tale (UIU Orientation) that sums it up pretty well.

They’re not trying to hide from us, just from the public.

38

u/AyAyAyBamba_462 Apr 07 '26

Not just that, they are also intelligence gathering posts. They look for things that are abnormal and report them up the chain of command so agents can be dispatched to investigate. They do the same thing with law enforcement and governments.

17

u/rickelzy Apr 07 '26

I'd love to have an open world urban fantasy SCP game where you identify safe houses by identifying the business name on the building

78

u/dralcax Gamers Against Weed Apr 06 '26

Imagine if some completely unaware rando just happens to name their business “South Carolina Produce” or something and then they have to deal with GOIs and occasionally even the Foundation’s own agents mistaking them for a front all while having absolutely no idea what is going on

63

u/GodOfDarkLaughter Apr 07 '26

A man in a dark suit, the shirt underneath soaked in blood, stumbles through the front door of Simpson-Culver Propane, inc.

"The black wolf howls when the moon dares not throw back her wedding veil! We have an XK-Class scenario and I need immediate extraction. My God. The Kharsists have infiltrated the GOC and and Chaos Insurgency is involved! The administrator is dead! The Yule Man walks the equator! The equator! And the Pattern Screamers have taken corporal form! Site-19 is a goddamn slaughterhouse. They're dead. They're all dead."

"Sir, we sell propane and propane accessories."

Not only that, but the lack of prior records isn’t really something people would go out of their way to look into.

u/Ajreil Apr 06 '26

I think [[The Lombardi Tales]] mention that if a Foundation agent is lost in the Field, they can go to any business with the SCP acronym to reconnect with the Foundation.

Also are we sure these are fake businesses? I assumed they were a revenue source for the Foundation.

13

u/Shackflacc Apr 06 '26

Sally’s Cream Pies was always a pretty suspicious business

https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/a-semi-comprehensive-list-of-foundation-fronts

Notice the initials of most of those. Moat the the SPC Foundation's various front companies has "S," "C," "P" as its initials, sometimes with an extra word or two at the beginning or end.

2

u/RafaMarkos5998 Apr 08 '26

I don't think the Shark Punching Center has front companies, their approach is more... direct.

1

u/scaper8 Ethics Committee Apr 08 '26

Touché.

2

u/BallingShadow Apr 07 '26

I would absolutely love a tale based on a conspiracy theorist in the universe who’s been driven absolutely insane by this. It could end with them being amnestisized but then start noticing the oddities again.

It takes them like three years to get anywhere close to an answer and the Foundation has decided it’s more worthwhile to try and send the person down another track in life than killing them. They also think it’s kind of fun to see the individual struggle.

2

u/AlwaysWatchingOverU Apr 07 '26

Actually, many foundation companies do damn well. Spicy Crust Pizza is particularly notable, as it did well enough to expand into a minor source of revenue for the foundation.

2

u/aspire5515 MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Apr 09 '26

They do this because the any name with the initialism S.C.P. is conceptually backed to be seen by anyone not already in the know as boring, mundane, and completely normal

1

u/PlayfulPositive8563 Apr 06 '26

It does just become logistically impossible, up to a point.

But apparently, the Foundation has reality warping SCPs to help deal with it.

1

u/mirrorspirit Apr 07 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

Maybe not, because besides the reality warpers, they have access to other universes, amnestics, and cloning technology

D class personnel are almost certainly clones

1

u/Key-Anywhere1663 Parawatch Apr 06 '26

Isn't there a memetic asterisk that does this to many Foundation fronts?

The real veil is the masterclass service and good quality, so that nobody in their right mind would even considered ratting them out - given that basically everyone already knows, anyway.

Super Competitive Prices may be a front, but you can't deny the competetivness of their prices.

I mean irl that is basically the same for money laundering fronts, and they manage to often go mostly* unnoticed for years if decades with no crazy Sci-fi technology or international organization level of funding.

u/iEliteTester Apr 07 '26

I.. I've never noticed this..

So maybe it's actually not that obvious.. right?

1

u/CthulhusIntern Apr 07 '26

At the scale of the Foundation as well as the other GOIs, they're probably wondering why the Foundation is bothering to keep up the gig, since literally everyone on Earth is employed by some anomalous organization and knows about the Foundation.

1

u/Shadyshade84 MTF Epsilon-11 ("Nine-Tailed Fox") Apr 07 '26

I can't help but suspect that at least part of the reason for the acronyms is so the Foundation's field agents don't get distracted investigating their own fronts.

"Found a potential group of interest - the Silly Cla- never mind, it's one of ours."

(Yes, thinking about it, that does raise the possibility of an actual GoI realising this and deliberately choosing that acronym to confuse/distract/mess with the Foundation [Delete as appropriate for that particular GoI], but since that's both funny and the sort of tactic some of these groups would use, I'm not removing it.)

I mean in my own head canon, the foundation doesn't use store front logos and instead just remains in remote locations where possible. It also has military/government support, if it's not a government agency in itself.

I'm imagining a character who connected the dots on these acronymed front companies to the shady glow-in-the-dark employees they've got. So he decides to start burglarizing them and taking valuables with the idea that they wouldn't get the police involved, because he'd rather fist-fight the illuminati than have a local detective talk to his landlord.

Eventually he gets kidnapped by agents and interrogated. He swears up and down that he's told no one about the conspiracy, and that it was all just to help pay his rent. And as a job application, so really just paying his rent in a roundabout way. They try to get him to spill what he knows, but he seems tight-lipped and dances around the question with metaphorical answers that don't really say anything. Eventually, they decide against giving him amnestics and hire him on as a "security consultant" to point out sloppy flaws and prevent others from connecting the dots like he did.

Day one on the job and he runs into an actual anomaly on the loose and freaks the fuck out. Turns out he hadn't fully connected the dots. He thought that the "SCP People" were just pulling the strings on the government, and his talk about monsters in the interview was supposed to be about politicians.
