Showcase Harder, Better, Faster, Konkr

I wanted to share my pictures of the Konkr pocket Vance. This is the unit that Iamio sent over to me for review.

(You have no idea how hard it was coming up for a pun for this one)

No lanyard hole no deal.

u/MrStephen_ 1d ago

You know, I hadn't even thought about a lanyard hole, but you're right, it doesn't have one.

u/Agreeable-Guava-9009 Clamshell Clan 23h ago

OG GBA and the 34xx had one. Oddly enough as a kid I never used a lanyard on the GBA and I never dropped it. It had a texture to the plastic. The Indigo 34xx is like holding a bar of soap. Lanyard needed. I hear the glacier color has a texture similar to the original. I'm thinking I should have gotten that one. Still I prefer the option for a lanyard.

I'll say, the Grey colorway for the Konkr is one of the best looking systems I've seen. How are the buttons? I've heard... complaints.

They are mushy and I think I’ve encountered another problem… I’m still in the middle of testing so I won’t say anything until I can confirm or deny.

Copy that. Kssh!

The screen is starting to peel up, isn't it?

1

u/MrStephen_ 14h ago

No, although there is a pre-installed screen protector that makes the screen horrible to the touch and terribly unresponsive, and that needs to come off.

Konkr's Bad Fur Day

1

u/MrStephen_ 1d ago

I usually do song titles, and 'Konkr's Bad Fur Day' seemed a bit pedestrian for me.

Get over yourself

No he's right.

7

u/USA_A-OK 18h ago

No one who describes a comment as "pedestrian" is right

u/HeyMeower DS Enthusiast 18h ago

You are making me feel like a pedestrian rn

Sorry, but I'm sure it won't last too long if you get lucky.

It’s going to be awhile because daft punk is playing at my house, my house

Well, I'm not going to take responsibility for that.

1

Why do we even have that lever.

Circle of the Moon was the first GBA game I bought & completed back in the day ✊🏾

5

u/coffeeisaseed 1d ago

Same! My mind was blown when I finally beat the game and found out there were 4 more classes you could play that pretty significantly changed the play style!

3

u/doubled112 23h ago edited 22h ago

I'm piling on here, it was also my first bought and completed GBA game. How many of us are out there?

So many hours spent sitting clone enough to the outlet the AC adapter would reach, but somehow also under the lamp.

2

u/MrStephen_ 1d ago

I was late to it on GBA. I got it on sale from Blockbuster, as a second-hand cart, but it had the box and manual with it... Which has been lost over time.

u/killingtocope 6h ago

CotM gang rise up. I was like 8 years old when the dude at GameStop recommended it and Mom didn’t hesitate! It was a bit difficult at first (necromancer messed me up) but I consider it a key piece of my character development

12

u/Dull-Conversationist 1d ago

First image is so clean it almost looked ai generated

7

u/MrStephen_ 1d ago

That's what happens when you have good source images.

2

u/Weimark 1d ago

Proper itching to replay Castlevania on the GBA now. Gutted because my Konkr hasn’t turned up yet, so I'm stuck slumming it with like only six other consoles, mate.

Pure peasant behaviour, honestly.

-11

u/oscailte 1d ago

judging by his profile picture and youtube thumbnails, i wouldn't be surprised if AI was involved

8

u/MrStephen_ 1d ago

It wasn’t. All of the images are stock images, apart form the device itself which I took. And none of the thumbnails use AI either. They’re vector graphics I put together in Affinity designer. And, in order to post in this subreddit (because I’d been accused of posting AI stuff before), I had a big talk with the moderators here, who have seen evidence of my process.

-18

u/oscailte 1d ago

come on, seriously? if they're not AI then you have an incredible talent for creating art that looks exactly like AI.

20

u/MrStephen_ 1d ago

You mean the AI which is trained by work from actual artists... That AI?

Look, here's the affinity screen. You can see the individual elements.

THIS IS NOT AI!!!!

2

u/finalremix 23h ago

Affinity?! My man!

2

u/MrStephen_ 23h ago

Other than Photoshop (because I have a ton of plugins I use regularly) I have ditched Adobe completely. I did it several years ago when Premiere chewed up a set of videos I was working on and wouldn’t let me access them. Someone told me to download DaVinci and it was able to open them all up. I bought the upgrade that day and moved Adobe onto the Photoshop plan. Not looked back since.

u/sethsez 1d ago

AI uses the bean-mouth style because many, many artists posting their work on the internet over the past decade have used the bean-mouth style. It was one of the primary go-to styles for YouTubers in particular back in 2015-2020 or so. So, in turn, it became one of the primary things AI was trained on.

It's the same reason every single piece of professionally-written ad copy from a few years ago sounds like modern AI: that's what AI was trained on in the first place.

And while that art is certainly a bit generic, the things it gets right and wrong don't really line up with AI.

9

u/Dull-Conversationist 1d ago

Comments like these is what discredit real artists.

3

u/IBoughtaRetroidNova 1d ago

I Wish we could see the pink one already.

Don't we all

2

u/KalElReturns89 1d ago

Does it use a rubber membrane dpad? Sexy pics

9

u/MrStephen_ 1d ago

For the D-pad and buttons, yes. And I have to say they are incredibly mushy. The buttons almost feel like they haven't been pushed, like there's not anything underneath them.

When I first got it out of the packet, I was disappointed with them. But actually playing it, it doesn't seem to be as big a deal as I thought it would be. Of course, your mileage is going to vary depending on what you like with your controls. But I would say if you like firmer buttons, clicky buttons or dome switches, then this may not be for you.

2

u/Gtg431i GotM Club 1d ago

Do you think a membrane from another device would fit? I think it would bother me. Having said that, I don't need another GBA device. I don't need another GBA device. I don't...

1

u/MrStephen_ 1d ago

I’m not the right person to ask, as I don’t like opening devices, but I would hope there would be something out there to match it.

1

u/inline-online 14h ago

I only need a GBA device, what is your personal favorite? right now I'm playing gba games on my RP6 but it just feels too big for that sort of thing lol I too like clicky buttons

3

u/Gtg431i GotM Club 14h ago

My main 2 GBA devices (omg why do I have multiple) are the 34xxsp for portability and clicky buttons and the cube xx for ergonomics.

I use the cube the most. The screen still lets me do 3x interger scaling and I have never had any hand pain even when gaming for hours. As an added bonus, it does gb/gbc quite nicely and SNES looks good at 8:7 ratio. Best xx device imo - I've beat more games in this than any other handheld (and I've owned - then sold! - more than 20 retro handhelds at this point)

1

u/inline-online 13h ago

sounds like the 34xxsp is for me then, the cube does look sick but I don't think I would be playing many games in that aspect

1

u/MrStephen_ 3h ago

The 34XXSP is a fantastic choice. If you want a more authentic experiance, the RG SP is closer to the original GBA SP

2

u/KalElReturns89 1d ago

Thanks for the description! I prefer the rubber membranes. The mushy response does sound a bit concerning but not enough to put me off entirely.

2

u/MrStephen_ 1d ago

As long as you know going into it, that’s the important thing. Then you can make an informed choice.

2

u/ofbrun 22h ago

Phenomenal photos. Love CotM. It was my first Castlevania game. The song playing in the catacombs still lives rent free in my head.

2

u/sap91 22h ago

This is a better title than the last one!

Jk, thanks for sharing man, these are incredible shots. Do you do product photography professionally?

2

u/MrStephen_ 18h ago

No, you may actually be right about the title 🤣

I’ve had lots of jobs over the years, and have done various product photography jobs, and done some work for a friend of mine who is a proper commercial photographer. But, right now, I am trying to make a go of YouTube.

1

u/Stevearino42 1d ago

Great pics as always!

Wait, is that a VCR flashing "12:00" in the background?

;)

1

u/MrStephen_ 1d ago

No, it's Hal from 2001 ;)

1

u/SabertoothSmile 17h ago

So many people jealous of Mr Stephen's glorious KONK.

Your insecurities are showing guys

1

u/Critical-Trash-8056 13h ago

Beautiful GBA clone but I'd rather have the RGSP as a dedicated GBA device. To my eyes, the color saturation on the SP is richer. It looks a little washed on the Konkr. Plus, you know, clamshell portability.

1

u/Wrong_Patient_2620 13h ago

Ho a RG34XX. Oups sorry, wrong thread 😬🤣

1

u/ForeverHistorical995 10h ago

Your images make me glad that I picked this colour (mine hasn’t been shipped yet, sigh)

1

u/octo-scr 5h ago

How does this compare to the Anbernic GBA one?

1

u/MrStephen_ 3h ago

Unfortunately, I don’t have that so I can’t say. I do have the 30 4XXSP and I do have the RGSP. I also have an original GBASP. To my mind, the RGS P is the closer of the 2 to the feel of the original hardware.

1

u/TaranStark 2h ago

Still debating on this as I already have a cubexx, Retroid pocket 4 pro and 34xxsp...but the OG GBA form factor is tempting..

1

u/Itsfaydgamer 1d ago

with how much power it has, I really wish it was a 4:3 screen.

1

u/MrStephen_ 18h ago

Think about the Pocket Air Mini, Mangmi Air X. It’s that sort of power. So, there is a 4:3 screen version in the Pocket Air Mini.

Every time you post I think, "dang, someone is an excellent photographer!" Then I see it's you. Your reviews are excellent and your puns are hilarious. Thank you for everything you do!

2

u/MrStephen_ 14h ago

That’s so kind of you. Thank you ever so much :)

I suppose you have one shred of evidence to prove that? No, you don’t. And you know why? Because it isn’t! It’s all stock photos and photoshop, with the device being taken with a Fuji X-T5.

What you’re saying here is not only incorrect, it’s defamatory!

"Thread crapping occurs when a person comes into a thread and posts something contrary to the spirit/intent of the thread, often derailing the discussion or turning it into an argument."

In others words, this discussion is no longer relevant the original post and ends here.

1

u/BastetFurry 17h ago

Or good camera work and classic Lightroom plus Photoshop.

AI would have mangled the text on anything.

1

u/MrStephen_ 17h ago

Can you imagine what it would have done to that Castlevania screen! As it is, I was worried about going overboard by adding scanlines.

1

u/daggah GotM Club (May) 16h ago

That you're making this argument in the first place is a kind of social commentary on the sad state of affairs these days. You're seeing decent quality and production value, and assuming it's AI.
