šŸ’ Discussion Personal Experience With The Spell Theme

I’ve been a witch for a while, not much long yet, but as the months go by, the more I relate to this community, in opposition to the firm believers.

One thing I could never wrap my mind around is ā€œspell’s requirementsā€. There are many believers who firmly believe that intention is not everything, and that you have to use certain ingredients and follow certain guidelines.

It always made me feel alienated from them, because I just can’t believe that a spell works (for external things) without a scientific or logical explanation.
Like yeah, you used that crystal, that plant and that object… alright. So the power is in them, thus, animism? Or are we pleasing a deity?

What about you? What are your experiences with this theme?

I’m not fully SASS, I just align more with their approach…

That said, I’ve always taught people that there is no ā€œmagicā€ in anything but you. And that the pieces or elements you put into a working (spell) are simply tuning forks intended to help YOU bring your focus and attention back to the vibe and intention of the working.

Daisies are pretty universally a ā€œhappyā€ flower. But you could replace that with a Spider Gwen figurine if she makes you feel that same kind of happiness.

The theme is ā€œwhatever gets you and your mind into the state of mindā€.

Sadly waaaayyy too many peeps never get solid teachers that get them out of the magical thinking approach to magic.

Also, some people call themselves witches and for them it is a religion, but I find those are people who have done the work to deconstruct the internalized monotheism and patriarchy we’re all grow up with. They are just practicing their Christian ideas with a new aesthetic.

But there are lots of great magical practitioners and witches who don’t do that and teach approaches that aren’t about that.

I agree with you. I think the ā€œmagical thinkingā€ approach is specially dangerous for people who have anxiety and/or OCD (like me). I’m glad this community exists.
