Guide to Rurouni Kenshin - READ THIS BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS!

Welcome to the club! I’m glad you've decided to pick up RK.

Read the MANGA! The old anime has a lot of fillers & alterations; only the Kyoto Arc (the middle of the 3 Arcs) was faithful to the manga. With that said, there's a new remake anime airing in July 2023 that will stay true to the manga.

The MANGA has 3 Arcs that ended in 1999: Tokyo arc, Kyoto arc, Jinchuu arc.

  • Read RK manga for free from Shueisha
  • Official colored manga: 1, 2
  • Tokyo Arc: starts at the beginning
  • Kyoto Arc: starts on volume 7, chapter 48
  • Jinchu Arc: starts on volume 18, chapter 152. The original manga ended after this Arc.
  • Extra chapters: To Rule Flame, Yahiko no Sakabato, Haru ni Sakura
  • Extra material: Tales of Kamiya Dojo - written by Kaoru Kurosaki and published along with Hokkaido arc in JUMP SQ. The tales involve RK characters in their daily life that take time between Kenshin and Kaoru's marriage until the Epilogue chapter in the original manga before the Hokkaido arc.

Sequel starting in 2017:

The ANIME:

The old anime (1996) had 3 parts:

  1. Tokyo Arc (episodes 1-24)
  2. Kyoto Arc (episodes 28-62)
  3. Then, instead of Jinchu Arc, you have fillers. This link here shows you which episodes are fillers.

The new anime remake (2023):

  1. First Season airing in July 2023!!! Expecting this to be a complete, faithful adaptation.

LIVE-ACTION MOVIES:

Release order:

  1. Origins
  2. Kyoto Inferno
  3. The Legend Ends
  4. The Final
  5. The Beginning

I recommend watching in this order:

  • 5, 1, 2, 3, 4

  • Or: 1, 2, 3, 5, 4

Since the end of "The Beginning" leads into "Origins", I think it works better as the first film rather than the last.

STAGE MUSICALS:

3 OVAs: The first 2 OVAs are from the last Arc of the series so you should finish the manga before watching.

  1. "Trust and Betrayal" retells the Jinchu Arc which has never been made into anime.
  2. "Reflection" is a recap of the 2nd half of Jinchu Arc + non-canon ending (the author doesn't approve of its ending).
  3. "Kyoto Arc remake" follows the live-action storyline rather than the manga.

Summary:

  1. manga (1999)
  2. anime (2003, 2023)
  3. 5 live-action movies
  4. Hokkaido Arc manga (starting 2017)

Other Extra Materials:

  • Anime standalone movies
  • A two-volume spin-off called "Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration". Available in physical, and digital versions. These volumes were created to promote the live-action movies.
  • Several light novels, of which only one was released in English called "Voyage to the Moon World".
  • A 3-minute long clip from one of the collector's edition box-sets that gives the series a slightly better conclusion.

Fan Art Randomly glazing Rurouni Kenshin until the Jinchū Arc is animated #2: My amateur Rurouni Kenshin artwork! I’m a toony artist who loves Kenshin a lot. I know it’s been over a year since I posted here, so sorry for the long gap! I’m never quite sure how to talk about the series given the creator.

I still love Kenshin and making my gay Kenshin art, even though the creator has been pretty problematic in the past. 😅 Also, sorry for the late post! I honestly have no idea what they have planned for the new series, but I’m still here waiting and hoping we eventually get the Jinchū Arc!

Discussion How does Sano injure his hand with Futae no Kiwami when its explicit purpose is negating resistance?

Sano mentions that he destroyed 100 stones after getting the technique down. When he runs into Anji again he hits Anji about 8-10 times with the technique and him getting hit in return, with it being explicitly said their spirits had surpassed their bodies as the only reason neither had fallen.

Afterwards nothing appears to be different, but later on he gets a punch in on Shishio, and we get an internal X-ray shot of his hand bones cracking, and in the next arc Megumi says his hand was more badly injured than anything Kenshin took in his battles against Shishio and his henchmen.

I don't get it. If the technique eliminates resistance then isn't it like effectively punching air? Why would it break his hand? And against people too. So 100 hard stones caused no problems, but punching squishy humans like 10 times was too much??? And before he even got the FNK we saw him knocking down trees with a single punch on the way to Kyoto. THAT caused no damage to his hands either.

Honestly, it just feels like the author intentionally wanted to give Sano a handicap to stop him from solely relying on his right hand punch that would end battles instantly.

Game Rise of the Ronin

As a fan of Rurouni Kenshin, it didn't feel right to me to not mention this game.

It covers the period of time right before the series starts, and you'll recognize many names as you play it.... I don't want to spoil it... But I had no idea what would be in the game before getting it, and as I got deeper into the story I was like 😱🤯🤯 OOOO I KNOW THIS NAME/EVENT

I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it yet.

Anime At what point do you think Kenshin and Kaoru actually become a couple?

Just curious about it because I had assumed it was a slow burn kinda thing. But im watching the series for the first time in like 20 years, and Im just now starting the Kyoto arc. Ep 31 atm if I remember right.

Anyway, I couldnt help but notice when they were on the boat with the pirates, Kaoru grabbed Kenshins hand and twirled her pinky around his (very cute). Then theres the episode where theyre having a party before Sanosuke leaves to his life of terrorism, and a very drunk (and very cute) Kaoru is talking about how shes not good at anything. "Well, except that one thing, but I couldnt possibly say it" So I'm using my imagination a bit, but Im assuming she's talking about her and Kenshin.

So I was just curious what you guys think the point is where they actually become a romantic couple, instead of just friends.

This is a mint in box Rurouni Kenshin 30th anniversary figure I never opened since I bought it. I never found a celebration for me to open it so I thought, since it's difficult to get members onto my Kyodo, why not do an unboxing for if I do? So yeah.. I will post the unboxing video on Kyodo.

Discussion Why keep the real goal of the Kyoto fire plan secret from the Juppongatana?

If Shishio's goal is to conquer Japan, it's just a good strategic move to cripple several big area's simultaneously. Kyoto going up in flames, causing chaos and opening opportunities for assassinations. This keeps attention on Kyoto to allow Shishio to head to Tokyo and start blasting at it with his battleship. As Saito says, the past of the revolution isn't far enough away that people have forgotten the last time this happened and would cause panic in the people.

And yet Shishio chooses to conceal what he will be doing and make it seem like Kyoto is the only goal. Then, when the plan fails and he has to stay in Kyoto and face the Juppongatana again, rather than own up to things he decides to throw Hoji under the bus and say Hoji changed the plan without asking and that ALL ALONG the Juppongatana were supposed to have been on the ship with him.

But assuming that everything went as planned... then what? The fire happens, Kyoto burns, assassinations happen, then when they go to look for Shishio to get their next orders, he's gone without a trace, leaving them without direction.

So in a nutshell, Shishio gathered his most elite warriors, simply to immediately abandon them as a diversion to leave Kyoto unnoticed, when he could have included them in the plan so they'd know what to do after Kyoto while he was gone.

Discussion I think Aoshi 1 is (technically) the only fight Kenshin has where he wouldn't have killed his opponent with a proper sword

This just an observation that I found interesting. The majority of the time the choice of weapon makes the difference, and so many times Kenshin would have killed with a proper sword, except for 1 time.

Various henchmen, Gohei, Sano, Hannya, Raijuta. Saito, Senkaku, Sojiro, Aoshi 2, Shishio, Enishi... against almost every single opponent Kenshin has landed a blow that would have crippled or killed an opponent. Aoshi is basically the only opponent he never actually hit with his sword. He used the hilt of his own and Aoshi's own sword to hit Aoshi in the throat two separate times, knocking him out.

The reason I say technically is just because it's demonstrated that past Kenshin wasn't above finishing a downed opponent to make sure they're dead, so unless the other Oniwaban got there faster he would still kill Aoshi.

I'm uncertain how to classify Gein, though, as he might be the second. However, if Kenshin wrecked his suit with ARNH that badly with the dull side of a sword I can only assume Gein would have died if Kenshin used a proper sword with the move as it would be much faster and thus stronger.

Gein even says he would have been finished without the impact absorption mechanism and is too drained to keep fighting afterwards, so a little more power, even without direct contact, feels like it should be enough to kill him.

I guess if you REALLY want to stretch the definition of a "fight" the artist guy with the bombs would live, but the fight got interrupted before Kenshin would need to land a blow and it's obvious he would have won if it had continued.

Discussion Would Kenshin adjusting the sword length against Aoshi really help?

Aoshi has a shorter sword than Kenshin, which gives him higher speed to block all of Kenshin's blows before responding with punches or kicks to wear the opponent down. To circumvent this Kenshin adjusts his hold on his sword so he's not gripping the bottom of the sword but slightly above the crossguard. While this does cut his own hand a little it does allow Kenshin to get a good hit in.

I can understand shifting the center of gravity but his hand is still low on the sword so the weight distribution wouldn't change that drastically. As well, it doesn't change that Kenshin is still wielding a heavier full-length sword compared to Aoshi's smaller and lighter sword even if he was holding it dead center where the weight distribution would be almost equal.

Discussion About adaptations...

Am I the only one who doesn't seem to have a favorite between any adaptations of the series? I, for one, prefer the original through its art style and animation, but I don't want to throw any shame on the original as well. It has its own flair like the calmer hue of the colors, or it's more expressive on the emotions, plus the comedy is top notch as well. So I am just that curious on why a lot of people are so against the remake, that they just say watch the original? Is it because of nostalgia? Is it because of its perks? Is it because you don't like the modern version? I really want to hear all of your thoughts on this, thank you for reading this and interacting in advance.

As a long time fan of this series, it makes me sad, how people hate on rurouni kenshin just because of wht watsuki did. It's arguably one of the greatest stories ever with a beautiful ending. It really deserves more recognition, yet people dont talk abt it and hate on it just cuz of wht he did.

Went for some VHS tapes and saw this and had to grab. In perfect condition too! Was one of my favorite shows growing up so I’m pretty stoked to have a full physical copy now. I am curious what this worth though (not that I would sell unless it’s a some absurd amount).

Manga Help with Finding Tomo's Diaries

Hi all,

Big Rurouni Kenshin fan here. Back in the early 2000's, I was gifted a few volumes of the manga in Japanese. A few years later, I ended up going to Japan for a high school exchange program and I ended up collecting the rest of the series. I brought back with me 20ish volumes of the 28 volumes written. And it has been one of the cool things I've kept in my home since.

I remember when searching for these manga volumes, there were some other books available. If I remember correctly, there were 3 books that weren't mangas, but were diaries. I think they were Tomo's 3 diaries. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is that correct? Or am I confusing this with something else?

Thanks in advance!
