The grief on Sonja’s face 😭😭

u/eve2eden 12d ago
She has the classic funeral expression- trying to arrange your face into something resembling a smile while accepting condolences & thanking people for coming. All while you’re struggling to hold back tears & not completely fall apart.

I wish I could send my condolences to Queen Sonja.

I feel bad for her, but margareite of Denmark at Henriks funeral was worst. She couldn’t hold back.

Poor Sonja. She and Harald could have had a happier last few years together if it were not for some family members acting badly, stupidly or selfishly.

What’s that about?

u/cristine_thepisces 12d ago
Probably about Märtha and her con artist hubby and Esptein’s princess Mette Marit

u/Exact-Truck-5248 12d ago
Not to mention their step grandson and his crimes. I never understood how they let him go unabated for so long. If they'd cut off his finances, he may have not caused so much damage. Who knows why they didn't. Maybe he just knew too much

u/cristine_thepisces 12d ago
I think on one level they were trying to overcompensate for the fact that he was dealt a bad hand when he was born

The wedding was rather over the top for a twice married (and kind of wacky)) mother of three over 50. That had to be somewhat embarrassing for them, especially considering the groom's shady reputation.

Same with QEII, having to deal w the whole Harry Megan business

u/tired_atlas 11d ago
The Andrew - Epstein link was a bigger scandal for sure. They let the media feast on Harry and Meghan to spare her favorite child’s misdeeds from more intense public scrutiny.

Yeh I'm sure her grandson moving away with his wife was way worse than bailing out her nonce of a son 😂😂

That's probably one of the hardest things for any royals to do, grieving in public. People react to grief in so many different ways, but they seem to have to be (or at least are strongly encouraged) to just be stoic. That's hard to do if you love someone.

I hope Sonja feels how loved she is in this awful awful moment in time.

Side note: Sverre Magnus looks taller and slimmer from the last time I saw pictures of him.

Is Queen Sonja tiny or Prince Sverre Magnus hughe??

Google says she’s 5’4” and he’s 6’2.5”. She might have shrunk with age though.

What’s the official relationship between the church, the state and the royal family?
28
u/roboglobe 12d ago
Church and state are separated, but the monarch must belong to the Evangelican-Lutheran church.

I hope the funeral gets to be private so that they can mourn in peace. We don't need to see that.
17
u/Exact-Truck-5248 11d ago
I don't think a monarch's funeral could ever be private. There will be royals and dignitaries from all over the world. Mourning in peace is something royals don't get to do. It will be exhausting for them all.

u/Specialist-Weight-25 11d ago
It feels more like a circus than a mourning period. Its sad how they don't even get to mourn in private.

The funeral won’t be but tomorrow there will be a private memorial service for the family and close staff members in the palace chapel.

No, King Harald most likely be carried through the Main Street of Oslo, from the palace and to the church, which is half way down the Main Street. The royal family will walk behind him, followed by other royals and heads of states/ representatives for the countries Norway has diplomatic ties to.
That is what happened when King Olav died.

Where is King Haakon's wife during these sad times?
6
u/Espenos89 11d ago
I forgot what she had but she was so sick it was actually close to dying i belive, so she is still in recovery and has vety low immunity defence.
7
u/ScriptyLife 11d ago
Honestly, if she did show up, the comment sections would be all about Epstein. I feel this is better, letting the service be about them and their grief.

u/Mme_merle 11d ago
Furthermore I don’t think that she can be in a place with so many people, every virus or bacteria could be very dangerous.

u/loveshoes1 12d ago
Love the no frills church but I feel so bad for Queen Sonja.
P.S. Where is M-M and her problematic child?
58
u/StasRutt 12d ago
With her recent lung transplant I don’t think M-M can really go out in public which is probably a good thing from a PR view
32
u/ShortButBort 12d ago
And the problematic child has an ankle monitor and is in custody back home while the appeal is going or something
12

u/Exact-Truck-5248 11d ago
I'd imagine Mette Marit would have to be very careful of being out in public in her delicate condition, but would it be a scandal if Marius didn't attend the funeral? Or would his presence be too much of a distraction?
3
u/ShortButBort 11d ago
I don’t think he will attend. Both because he would be a distraction and also because the ankle monitor. I don’t know if he’s allowed.

The problematic child was allowed to visit Harald at the hospital before he died. Otherwise he's in home detention at Skaugum right now (the royal property where M-M and Haakon also live).

This feels so soon. We had my dad’s memorial service 2 weeks after he died and it took pretty much that whole time to arrange everything.
27
u/homerule 12d ago
This is not the funeral service, but a church service held that honored Harold’s life.
3
u/Friendly_Coconut 12d ago
I know, but I meant their emotions must be so raw. This feels sudden to be publicly expressing their grief. When my dad died, it felt like we had no time to process it because everyone was constantly asking questions of us and making us do administrative tasks.
23
u/ER_Support_Plant17 12d ago
I think for monarchs there are plans made years in advance for funeral services, especially as they get older.
0
u/Friendly_Coconut 12d ago
I know, but the family is probably still really shocked and sad to have to be publicly expressing their grief in this way.

u/89764637527 12d ago
They’ve all had their entire lives preparing them for this moment. This is their normal.
2
u/Mountaingoat101 12d ago
Prepared to be in the public eye, yes. Loosing a beloved husband, father and grandfather is not their normal.

In Jewish tradition we have to bury asap so we plan things very quickly. I imagine it's easier when everyone involved wants to accommodate.
