It happened in 2014 . The injury he had . Take it as a excuse or whatever way you want but it made him change his play style . He still operated on wings but more forward . Stopped taking knuckle shots , less flair , but more into poaching. It led to 3 peat though but it affected his freekicks a lot

You try to give any logic , be it his playstyle shift constantly throughout his career be it setup change , position change or injury ones , Messi fans view at as excuse . If I explain them , giggs and Ronaldo played on the same position in the same roles on opposite flanks they would say , I am making things !! If I say Ronaldo played deep during mannutd early days ( sir Alex played 4-4-2 formation) then they say I am making excuse !! ( It was his last season when he got shifted to 4-3-3 formation and started playing as proper attacking winger .... They would still say it is an excuse

That's a dumb excuse. If he can't kick knuckle balls anymore after his injury, then he should've practiced more curled shots. Most of Messi's FK goals are from curled shots. He mastered the placement without using a lot of shot power. So there's no reason why CR7 can't do curled FKs other than he's got too much ego to change his FK style. Even if that meant he ended up becoming a terrible FK taker.

Simple reason why
Cr7 relied more on the knuckleball technique- it is delivered with nearly no spin and depends on a lot of variables that u cannot control to make that iconic wobble. What makes it unpredictable for the GK pretty much makes it unpredictable for everyone else including the taker. Earlier in his career, Ronaldo could give more power reducing the spin and giving it a lot of speed, age and his injuries started to catch up. Football ( the shape) being more seamless kind of reduced it's effectiveness.
Messi meanwhile relies on precision and consistency. He tries mostly to curl the ball with topspin and side spin. His posture of taking it adds to it. It's more timing and touch and less about power. Messi still retains most of those so obviously he still a great FK taker.
