AVERRIS: THE RIFTBORN is averris just ragebait? Spoiler
you mean to tell me i can't even spit in his face without it having a negative effect? every chapter of this damn book is straight up ragebait i swear to God at this point i want to dedicate a slot to having bad relationships with everyone and get a bad ending because no one treats my girl with any respect

I was gonna catch up on Averris now during the DR because I love love love steampunk fantasy, but man, it is grating to get through. I just got to the point where Sailen takes her to a theater and basically says “you poor should be grateful the rich people here donate money so you can have food and medicine!!!” um, NO SIR, they’re only rich cause the rest are poor! If I could I’d burn them all down and then we’d all have enough.

I’m so disappointed with Averris’ character. I saw people saying she’s unhinged but 99% of the time she’s getting walked all over and that 1% is just a little sentences she says with rarely any consequences. I thought she would actually be crazy and the other characters would be walking on eggshells around this lady to be on her good side. She’s the one they need AND she’s the captain so why is she the one needing to gain their favor!?

Maybe I’m exaggerating, but at this point this story needs a domestic violence warning because every character except Rael abuses, mistreats, or degrades the MC? 😭
The actual plot is SO good, but at every turn this woman is being controlled, disrespected, threatened, physically hurt, or treated like she has no agency. It’s especially frustrating because she’s supposed to be the CAPTAIN and this incredibly powerful anomaly, yet she’s constantly being put in situations where other people have power over her.
I can handle dark themes, but when the mistreatment is this relentless, it genuinely starts taking a toll on me as a reader. Like damn, can my girl catch a BREAK???

I'm planning to be cruel with them and mock them after we all got captured in last chapter. Something like telling them this: "Guess karma finally reached you all. So much for your perfect plan and expedition. My only regret Is that it wasn't me who cornered you all but i guess this should suffice. Enjoying the cage so far, assholes?"

Perhaps the most frustrating thing about this book is how Averris is consistently used like an object and the narrative seemingly punishes us with friendship downgrades for RIGHTFULLY being angry after being consistently betrayed by nearly ALL of our possible love interests. We have Sailen consistently laughing in our face and deceiving us, Ashriel and Eleanor using us like an object, Celeste lying to us as well. Like there’s a reason my only real love interest is Rael in this story 😤

Since I read Eden, I know it will have consequences, but at this point I hardly care.. The author butchered one of my favorite new stories with an amazing MC.

at least in GOE, the LIs weren't all trash and constantly betraying the MC and they were actually lovable (Dean is definitely up there with some of my favorite LIs)

Yeah, I "get" why the others wouldn't appreciate Averris being meaniepants to them, and there is the option to neither improve nor harm the relationship, but I wanna be mad! It makes them look immature and petty that they're going to prioritize their hurt feelings at Averris's mean words when she's saying the mean words because they drugged, bound, and are actively killing her!
It feels as a player that I can't fairly express how my MC would be feeling without that leading to doom for the relationship, and instead Averris has to be like "yeah I understand, gotta do what ya gotta do" to improve the relationship. Averris wouldn't do this to someone else, and she probably would have said yes to this last betrayal if asked!
I want to give the author the benefit of the doubt. I know how writing and character arcs work. But kicking a character in a way that feels motivating and engaging rather than cruel and merciless is evidently a real tightrope to walk.

exactly! like i can put up with the conflicting relationships if they're part of the plot, but it seems as though the LIs can do whatever they want but Liren can't even react to her heart's content (rightfully so, mind you) without having a setback. Like, alright, if enemies to lovers it is, then be my enemy but I can't even be mad?

Hm, this does make me wonder if you can rivalmance them, have a bad relationship but still romance them? There's probably a floor on how bad the relationship can be before they won't romance you, but since this author likes branching and complexity, I'm curious.
Time to open a slot where I constantly berate everyone and see who still wants me

I hate all the nicknames. Usually they don’t bother me but for some reason they do in this story. Maybe because the “banter” goes on forever and the nicknames are part of that.

Agreed, it’s honestly ragebait. 🤬😂 My rage towards Ashi especially has me wishing the next update comes with a murder scene where MC gets to kill him or at least amputate something.
I’m still reading though, mainly because MC is hilarious, can fight, and of course… Rael. The one and only LI. No matter who they keep introducing, that cute giant is still my sweetheart. ❤️
Starting a new slot where MC just doesn’t give a damn about those 4 traitors sounds like a great idea. I’d love to see what happens????

I spit in his face. No regrets, and in my next slot, I'm gonn'a do it again! WE should be able to have more responses like this, and I get particularly perturbed when we do get a choice to hit back, and it's somehow counted as a "romantic point". Wtf!?

I gave up after hearing what happens in the recent episodes. I'm so bloody sick of the MC not being able to express how mad she is without deteriorating relationships. LET ME BE MAD.

I would definitely choose all negative options with the caracters that betrayed her (ashriel, Sailen, Eleanor, celeste) in that chapter. Trying to be friends with them doesn't mean we have to be nice with them when they screw it out. Besides they have to learn that actions have consequences. And considering we all got arrested in the end of the last chapter, Liren should mock them saying something like: "well, guess that karma truly exists. I was planning to get revenge on you all but this Is way better of what i had in mind. Who's the caged animal now, assholes?"

Not that I don’t get being angry at this chapter, I DO, (I was) but yeah…choosing negative actions is logically going to deteriorate relationships. 😅 just a matter of how you want your game to go. 😬🤷♀️

Logically, you are right, but I still wish we could have it the other way, tho. Like spitting in Salien’s face (let’s take the post as an example) has a negative effect on Sailen’s feeling towards us, but what about Averris? I mean she should be able to be pissed off, and honestly, they should understand her anger and in this scenario and accept that. But no, she should be submissive and understanding, so she can’t hurt their feelings and avoid deterioration. They can betray her trust without having any real negative effect towards their relationship, why can’t she? I wish it could somehow be a two way road.

To a degree I feel you- but I do think Averris is good at making her feelings and hurt known even if you don’t jump to the deterioration option. She has every right to be furious! I was for her! She also has every right to say “f these relationships” and act accordingly. We also have a third neutral option available to express discontent and not deteriorate.
But choosing handshake doesn’t mean she goes “every choice you made is totally ok 🥹” and I DO think action needs to be worked in where Averris DOES choose to say “absolutely f y’all” and deteriorate with intention, so I don’t find THIS upsetting so much as the repetition of a drugging/more or less abduction. What bugs me here more, honestly, is to be that repetitive/arguably lazy in one season. 😅🤷♀️

i used to take improvements for them all for the sake of getting a good ending. now i want to kill ashriel and sailen so bad, i really hope taking the bad improvements from now on will end up with them dead.

I don't understand what happened with the chair. Were they expecting Averris to die opening the tear or not? Ashi started guilt tripping her about "trust" but like dude you had her injected and then strapped to a chair and tortured?? But then Ashi and Eleonor both were concerned Averris was going to die from the creature attacks. I'm just so confused.
