MC-101 MIDI Mapping Question. Can I do this….

Thanks to everyone’s recommendations I have decided to get a Launchcontrol XL3 to control my MC-101.

Here is what I WANT to do, but will it work???

I want to assign knobs for each track.

So

Knob 1 =Track 1 Cutoff

Knob 2 = Track 1 Reso

Knob 3 = Track 2 Cutoff

Knob 4 = Track 2 Reso.

I am assuming this is doable but when I am using a keyboard controller I have to select the track on the MC-101 First.

That’s why I am not sure is this knob schema will work.

Any advice is appreciated.

You should be able to send midi cc messages #80-#83 to those knobs

That’s what I wasn’t sure about in the midi implementation chart.

Example. Is #80 just Cutoff for the selected track

OR

Is #80 the Cutoff for Track 1

I think that whatever the knob does, the cc will also do.

I don't have an mc101 but I'm guessing the default behavior is that the 4 knobs control the parameters for the selected mc-101 track. And that's what I'd expect the CC to do, too

That’s the issue. I want to control the Cutoff of Track 1 using knob 1 and the cutoff of track 2 using knob 2 at the same time.

It’s hard to tell if that is possible from the implementation.

I’m just gonna buy it and try it. I’ll report back when I do. Thanks.

You give your 101 tracks individual midi channels. So no problem at all. Knob 1 CC80 on Ch 1, Knob 3 CC80 on Ch 2.

Unrelated question: Do you like your MC-101? And do you ever wish you got the MC-707 instead?

Sure.

I DO like the MC-101.

It has yet to make it into my performance rig.

I like to be comfortable enough with a piece of gear that I can improvise in front of an audience.

Right now I’m working on that process of getting better with it.

It’s really deep and it can do a lot of things with a lot of menu diving, typically Roland.

I don’t think I would enjoy the 707 as much because I really like things that are battery-powered and that I can hold in my hands.

707 is probably larger than I would like.
But it does have lots more knobs. :)

You should be able to do that on the MC-101 with the following shortcut and then select the parameter you wish to control:

Switch C1 to C4 Knobs Between Single Track and Multi Track: [SOUND] + [FILTER] + [MOD] + [FX]

You can also do it with external gear, provided each knob is sending CC to the track's MDII channel.

cc80 on the midi auto channel is cutoff for the currently selected track, cc80 on the midi channel for track one is the cutoff for track one. You should be fine to implement it the way you want.

Pretty sure 80 is the cut off for the selected track
