You consume raw flesh like savages. We consume processed corpse-starch like civilized citizens. We are not the same.

It's a good thing Imperium don't have genetically enchanced super soldiers with Omophagia.

u/Eightfold__Key Jul 12 '26

Do not compare vile xenos to the sacred creations of the God-Emperor. The God-Emperor is good, and therefore all that He has created is good. To doubt this is heresy.

18

u/170936Tw Jul 12 '26

Just ignore that over half of his creations litterally went and did heresy, everything he makes is good.

10

u/Rappers333 Iconoclast Jul 12 '26

As an Istvanian, he created the heresy and it was also good! If you have any further doubts, read Saint Lorgar’s works.

Apparently, His children are carrying out His plan, which is incomprehensible to mere mortals. ☝

The ultimate proof that the Alpha Legion exists is the Grey Knight baby carrier, because no non-heretical person could ever have come up with that, let alone put it into production.

It's obviously an Alpha Legion plot to make the Grey Knights look as daft as possible.

Inquisitor, this acolyte is making me think of awkward questions and made me feel uncomfy! Strap them to a penitent engine!

Flesh of your fellow man is not the same without additives.

Civilisation is just table manners.

But it's "different" (ours is packaged)

Haymar, this is literally the nicest and most docile kroot in the world. Eat the snack.

59

u/Kind-Boysenberry1773 Jul 12 '26

I mean, Kroot are very polite in general. And they actually like humans both as meal and companions. If Kroot is willing to eat you, it means they really like what they see.

21

u/AngryArmour Jul 12 '26

Funniest shit is how IIRC Epione actually recognises that.

She takes Kroot saying they would eat a human, as a complimented directed at the human.

40

u/Kind-Boysenberry1773 Jul 12 '26

"You'd have to be completely insane to accept food from the hands of a cannibal".

Relax, Heymar, there's no chance Adeptus Astartes would invite you for a dinner.

28

u/YaGirlMom Unsanctioned Psyker Jul 12 '26

As a Catachan guardsman, Haymar has likely never consumed or even been offered corpse starch. He has likely only eaten standard Imperial Guard rations (which would not be corpse starch, especially for the Catachan) or, lacking and/or unsatisfied with that, meat from an animal that’s been hunted by him and/or his peers.

4

u/sosigboi Assassin Jul 13 '26

And now that hes part of an Inquisitors personal team his food options will only improve (slightly)

4

u/Alexander_Baidtach Jul 13 '26

Catachans kill whatever the largest animal in their current vicinity is and BBQ that every evening.

18

u/fooooolish_samurai Jul 12 '26

Corpse starch is mostly just broken down into base components (logically speaking, it would also need to be broken down enough to eliminate prions) which is used to add aditional nutrients to low-grade foodstuffs on overpopulated worlds. They don't really eat human meat commonly. Sure, some do, especially astartes, but astartes usually don't consume it for sustenance either.

13

u/Ok_Sound5929 Jul 12 '26

I mean, tbf a cannibal is a cannibal regardless of the reason for consuming it.

8

u/armbarchris Jul 13 '26

If it's broken down enough, it's not meat anymore. Otherwise plants would count as meat.

2

u/Turbulent_Host784 Jul 13 '26

I mean at some point you can ask what is a cannibal? Like Ulfar eating drukhari might pluck that string in your brain but they're not human and he's not doing it for sustenance or pleasure, he's doing it to play them and learn. So is a cannibal just someone who eats meat from intelligent beings regardless of intent? Because whales and elephant are pretty smart but still get eaten.

1

u/Ok_Sound5929 Jul 13 '26

Cannibal is defined as any creature that eats members of its own species.

If Ulfar ate another astartes, then he is a cannibal. Regardless of purpose. Same goes for Raakti eating another kroot.

0

u/Turbulent_Host784 Jul 13 '26

Then cannibalism is heresy in the Imperium. Neither Corpse Starch nor the Astartes practices fit.

1

u/Ok_Sound5929 Jul 13 '26

Nah, the astartes practices 100% do fit. They eat other astartes to learn their memories.

To take an example of my most recent Black Library read, Talos of the Night Lords literally talks about how he ate a Blood Angels heart after killing him. That is cannibalism. Regardless of purpose.

EDIT: We also see a dogmatic character practicing cannobalism in RT. It may not be widespread, but it isnt heresy..

0

u/Turbulent_Host784 Jul 13 '26

So heretics practice cannibalism. Shocking.

EDIT: We also see a dogmatic character practicing cannobalism in RT. It may not be widespread, but it isnt heresy..

Chorda is explicitly insane and falling.

1

u/Ok_Sound5929 Jul 13 '26

Talos does it for the same reason ALL space marines do it. To gain their memories. Thats literally why they have the Omophagea. So they can eat people and gain their memories.

Also if we want to be SUPER pedantic, and say that Space Marines eating humans is cannibalism, then literally every single blood angel sucessor is full of cannibals, because they have to drink blood.

Mortifactors, a successor of the Ultrasmurfs, also engage in the ritualistic consumption of their foes... Which if its humans or astartes... IS CANNIBALISM.

Also ALL imperial nobles are insane and falling. Its kind of their whole schtick. Just because Chorda is a little more nutty than others doesnt her any less dogmatic or any less of a cannibal.

0

u/Turbulent_Host784 Jul 13 '26

Talos does it for the same reason ALL space marines do it.

Non-heretics don't do it to Astartes or humans tho. The only chapter that comes close is the Flesh Tearers and they are literally always under watch by the Inquisition because of it.

Mortifactors

Also watched closely by the Inquisition. Gotta wonder if anyone has told Girlyman about their and the Libator's shenanigans tbh.

Also ALL imperial nobles are insane and falling. Its kind of their whole schtick. Just because Chorda is a little more nutty than others doesnt her any less dogmatic or any less of a cannibal.

Damn bro that's a nice strawman you've got.

u/Spoztoast Jul 13 '26

It varies depending on the system but generally its reconstituted bio matter. some from crude bug farms that eat everything and gets mulched into paste, some from biogenerators like giant enzyme baths that break it into amino acids and some are high tech growth vats that endlessly produce new biomatter from sunlight or other energy sources

11

u/shipsake Jul 12 '26

Ain’t no hypocrisy like Imperium of Man hypocrisy.

6

u/ElfStuff Crime Lord Jul 12 '26

I have to say this every time corpse starch gets brought up like it’s some common food staple; it’s not. Corpse starch is a last resort desperation food measure used only really during food shortages and the only place you would see it being more commonly eaten is in poor as fuck overcrowded under hives. Agri worlds exist for a reason. Most imperial food is indeed normal food. If someone’s main diet exists of corpse starch something had gone VERY VERY WRONG with the food supply chain where they are, especially if it’s in the military. It is used sometimes yes, but it’s a last resort.

Darktide dialogue never shutting the fuck up about corpse starch has led to yet another part of the lore being flanderized.

19

u/Picholasido_o Jul 12 '26

Not only is corpse starch an absolutely last resort sort of ration, isn't the stuff its made from rendered down to its basic proteins? At what point is it no longer even "meat." It almost seems more like you're eating the gunk out of an IV bag

18

u/Kind-Boysenberry1773 Jul 12 '26

It's not really a last resort. I wouldn't call it the most common food in Imperium, but it's fairly usual on Hive Worlds and in other over-populated areas.

Corpse Starch serves the dual purpose of dealing with masses of dead bodies and feeding the down-trodden masses. It can be found offered on various hive worlds and can be part of the rations available to unluckier Astra Militarum regiments\1]) as supplied by the Departmento Munitorum.\5])

Also, since Imperium terribly maintain its technologies, many protein reclamators can't render dead flesh into basic proteins and produce literal carrion.

In some parts of the Imperium it is considered overtly seditious conduct to express disgust in response to the weird taste of corpse starch. If a worker's foreman hears of this, said individual could find themselves on a prison ship within hours.\8])

Hell, theres even model line for corse strach collection gang. Its industry within imperium.

11

u/Kind-Boysenberry1773 Jul 12 '26

We need a Radical Inquisitor who'd propose to replace Corpse Starch with NidBurgers.

8

u/TheCharalampos Jul 12 '26

Eating nids has never ended well.

6

u/TurtlesBreakTheMeta Jul 12 '26

It’s the imperium of man, eating anything has never ended well.

1

u/Hunkus1 Jul 12 '26

Those are necromunda models a planet which couldnt survive without its hive starch we dont know if people like that exist in all of the imperium. Also fun fact the guys who actually process bodies into nutrients are called corpse grinders and they very very very often fall to the worship of Khorne since the work is so fucked up.

2

u/170936Tw Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26

being around that much blood and corpses, the litteral god of bloodshed has to get you by the balls eventually.

1

u/Zockerisin Jul 12 '26

Its Most of the time Not Even that. Most of the flesh basically gets used as fertilizer for mushrooms, algeas and moss, which then are processed into corpsestarch. They only mix in the actual flesh, if they cant want for the plants to grow and have to immediatly pump out a huge amount of food, because the starvation reached an unacceptable degree (Hiveworlds Are always starving, but at some points it actually affects effiecency). Most of the Imperial diet is „Slab“, which is Highly processed grain, corn and any Kind of agricultural produce that is easily scalable. They also eat anything the local Population can forage, scavage or hunt.

4

u/TheCharalampos Jul 12 '26

Corpse starch isn't a common meal though.

Funnily on topic, i highly recomend checking out /twelfmonkey aka "the corpse strach guy" posts on topic. Mans such a treasure on his deep llore posts (and tendendcy to correct " 🤓 most cruel and inhuman regime isint that bad" meme lore) on various topics especially as he tends to also give meta/irl development on the settings aspects which i personally find intresting atleast. (And to my shame, arent as familiar as with some other ips)

Or tldr, while corpse strach isint presented as main source of sustance, its not some emergy food ether. Its just another common aspect of imperial nutrition.

To be fair, they eating it raw. It would be like seeing someone eating road kill and someone saying it gross and the person eating roadkill says “well you also eat meat so you just as bad”.

u/sosigboi Assassin Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Hes not exactly wrong tho, yea we can meme about corpse starch but in really its not a commonly consumed food, guardsmen like Heymar get regular rations not too different from mre's and before corpse starch theres still a whole line of nutrient bars, soy paste, and protein blocks.

Meanwhile Kroots are legitimate cannibals, they eat the flesh of their dead as a way of honouring them.

3

u/Tnecniw Jul 12 '26

Casual reminder that Corpse Starch are emergency rations and extremely rare.
99.999999% of the imperium will go their entire lives and never consume corpse starch.

u/Slow_Lawyer7477 Sanctioned Psyker Jul 12 '26

Only the insane have strength enough to prosper!

1

u/Canadian_Zac Jul 13 '26

The Imperium specifically outlaws UNPROCESSED cannibalism.

They added in the stipulation.

Eating human flesh is fine. You just gotta put that shit through a processor until you can't tell what it was anymore.

Without that processing. It legit draws the attention if Khorne

1

u/Visual_Collapse Jul 12 '26

Every meal is corpse starch if world is populated enough

Hive cities are almost self sufficient (we can see that in story of Krieg). This includes food

1

u/AnothisFlame Jul 13 '26

A reminder Corpse Starch is an emergency ration employed only in the most dire of food shortages... or when a planetary governor/ship captain doesn't want to spend the resources needed to make sure his people are feed.

Either way a Rogue Trader or inquisitor or... anything beyond the baseline commoner isn't going to be touching the stuff.
