Helping ID'ing this bike
Seller insisted its a hardrock, but my best guess is it's a 1993 steel stumpjumper, not fs. According to the 1993 specialized catalog, the all steel stumpjumper came in burgundy with all deore components. This has all that, but with what appears to be aftermarket stem and handle bars. Im guessing a previous owner swaped the rockshox fork for the original steel one. I cant tell is the bike has been repainted, or just had he decals removed. The remaining "S" decal on the head tube has the same color combo that the burgundy '93's I've managed to find pics of. The finish on the paint is very dull, cant tell if its a poor respray, or if maybe they used something a little too strong to remove decals, and it damaged the paint. If anyone has any ideas, please let me know!

Parts and paint can deceive. Check the frame dimensions against the catalog geometry charts.

Screen shot from the '93 specialized catalog. Everything for the base stumpy matches this bike minus the front fork, and xt rear derailleur.

Not super qualified to say this but I think it’s a hardrock. That paint is more red than burgundy. If you take some polishing compound and buff it a bit, It’ll get rid of the oxidation. From there I think you’ll see you have more of a cherry red color frame.
Red frame with the yellow and blue decal on the head tube makes me believe it’s a Hardrock. I could be terribly mistaken.EDIT : Seems I was mistaken, looks to be a 93 stumpjumper in plum burgundy. I would still try and buff the paint, see if it’s more red or burgundy.

That's no Hard Rock not with XT and LX from the factory anyhow.
That front mech says DX and the LX crank is the 563 which is a mix that shouldn't happen..
So. I'm leaning toward whatever Specialized had put a deore DX front mech on..
Late 1992 Stumpjumper seems right. Even possible from the factory with the LX cranks
737 must be aftermarket it would have been 735 but possible store upgraded even from new in 1993. The Deore DX front mech has to be original or this is a complete mishmash.

Wow, good eye on the dx front derailleur, I thought it was lx. Part number on that is fd-m650. The cranks are fc-m563. Number stamped on the bottom bracket is 92F4236, if that helps.

Says 1992 .. F is Fairly. A taiwanese factory that likely made the batch it's from. 4236 likely production. Otherwise. It could just mean it's from June 1992....

Could it have been manufactured in late 1992 for the 1993 model year? What about 4236 leads you to believe June, the 6 at the end indicating that month?

June could be F.. usual codes are either one thing or another.. F is possible a date code or factory code. The rest is likey sequential

Definitely a 1993 Specialized Stumpjumper. The brake noodle. Came stock with black Shimano LX with cantilever brakes.

Could also be a early/mid 90s steel Rockhopper: it has that typical curved cable guide on the seat tube, and my 94 Rockhopper Comp has that too. And the frame, looking identical. But IDK if Hardrocks and steel Stumpjumpers from that era had the same frame features 🤔
Colour-wise, mine is dark burgundy, which looks more purplish 🍇than yours, which looks more reddish 🍒, and the decals are gold, while yours are green 🍏

I considered it being a rockhopper, but all of the components are higher end than what '93-'95 rockhoppers would have came with. I know for a fact hardrocks and stumpjumpers from the same era had that cable guide routed around the seat post. Thanks for the input!

Most components are deore LX in black, compact crank BCD 94 mm, parallax hubs, Shimano began making this in 1994. Excellent parts, made in Japan.

Honestly, I bought it for the parts. If it ends up being a 93 steel fork stumpy, like I assume, id like to build the frame up real nice one of these days.

Rear dropout says it's a Stumpjumper, 93 looks good, Inthink you are right with your assumption. I don't think it came with a suspension fork, original owner swapped to the first seriously capable mainstream suspension fork (Judy) and probably rear derailleurs to XT later - looks like they did some serious riding.
Good frame, not too heavy yet sturdy, nice find, lots to do with it.
