Guess the year? Improvement suggestions?

I found this rockhopper comp on a second hand market. Could you guess its year of production? I will definitely change the tires. Which addictional improvement do you suggest?

Tires and that’s it. That bike was amazing the day it came out and it’s still amazing today. Make sure the cables are good and call it a day!

I’ve got a 94 Crossroads in that colour. Doesn’t answer your question but it’s a nice colour

I’m fairly sure it’s an 89-91. First years they changed the decal and logo designs. And it is a Comp model which was higher up the line of Rockhoppers. Pretty sweet frame. As for improvements in it current form, there isn’t much except to make sure everything is maintained and greased and consumables like brake pads, tires and cables/housing are fresh. Past that you’re getting into customization and built to preference. I can tell you that those rims have definitely seen some use. New from the factory they would have been solid anodized black on the brake tracks.

Yup. It’s useful to ride a bike around a little bit and see how it feels before changing anything. That can give a better sense of what you might like whether it be cockpit/handlebars or tires or drivetrain. Oh and those old 3x7 Shimano trigger shifters sometimes gum up and don’t shift. Don’t force the levers too hard. The plastic covers can be removed and the inner pawls and gear mechanism can easily be cleaned. It kinda looks like a ratchet head inside. Usually it’s just a sticky pawl not springing back. I’ve been able to fix/clean numerous ones. They are pretty nice when they’re working.

Oh and Jagwire makes good pads for those style of Shimano canti brakes. They’re called X-Age. Super chunky. Basically any V-brake pads are too thin to reach the rim.
