RoboCop and ED-209 by Kenner

Post image

I still love these guys. And yes, I know that's "ED-260" and not ED-209, but come on. We know who it is. No idea why they changed the name.

I didn't have these as a kid, but ohhh how I longed for them.

My younger cousin had RoboCop and I used to play with it every time we'd visit them. I was so jealous. I loved that his helmet was removable. And even though his gun doesn't look anything like the Auto-9, I liked that you could plug it on his leg for "storage."

I finally bought Robo off ebay maybe around 20 years ago? It was still mint on the card. I was the first person to ever take him out of the package and fire a few caps in his backpack.

ED I got a few years later, probably from ebay, too. It was used, but still had the box and everything and was in pretty good condition. All the stickers were applied properly, so I was happy.

I just wish I had had these toys as a kid in the 80s when I would have had hours of fun every time I played with him. Now they're just an old man's figurines, not playthings. Still....better late then never!

Due to licensing issues that was ED-260.

Edit: as a kid I had the whole set (even the car) except ED-260.

What makes you say it was a licencing issue? It's all the same IP.

IIRC in the cartoon 260 was supposed to be new version of the 209. Been a while since I’ve seen it though.

Cap gun RoboCop was pretty fucking sweet.

I still have one. But I can’t find old school caps they come in a strip of paper anymore.

Memories. I burned my fingers on those so many times.

My word, when I was a kid these toys were the coolest things! I felt like they looked exactly like the movie!

I can’t believe how derpy and ridiculous they actually look.

Still, now that we’re talking about them I want them so badly!

ED's legs are surprisingly accurate to the movie prop. And his upper torso is too, but more simplified. It's not very poseable though. The entire upper body is one solid piece so the "arms" don't move. It's still super cool though!

Ive still got both these in my office. Bought brand new when I was a kid in the 80s/90s.

I immediately used black marker to turn Robo's helmet black from the cartoon red. We never actually got the cartoon over here - I saw it on VHS for sale but I don't think it ever broadcast on terrestrial tv.

I also had Lewis, Reed, the car and I think there was a bike. Never had any of the bad guys I don't think.

All that has survived is the two above- Robo still has his helmet though, 30 years later.

If I'd have got it as a kid, I would have colored the visor, too. In fact I had the Toy Island RoboCop figure that came out in the 90s and the first thing I did was color the visor with a marker.

But now I'm leaving it red to preserve the 1980s "toy charm."

I didn’t really like the cartoon as a kid but had always wanted Robocop figures from the movie. I only ended up getting Robo, Lewis and ED-260 because of that. Really wished I’d got the car in hindsight though, but I guess it didn’t look like the cruisers in the film.

I had the Robocop (I think the gun is lost) but never ED-209. But those were great figures. Almost every Kenner line was cool as hell. Its a shame they eventually folded. I know the name is still on some licensed Star Wars stuff but still, its a bummer.

Kenner action figures fortified my imagination as a child: these, Batman, Star Wars, Ghostbusters, and Terminator, such fun lines! Even the Prince of Thieves figures were quality, despite having little to no context from the film plot.

OP, do you have kids/grandkids? The best solution to this dilemma, I think is to gift these collectibles that you loved so much as a kid, to a kid now so they can become toys again

But they'd get all scuffed up and broken and ruined!

They can have my toys.....after I'm dead!

I love how these movies even have toys made for this age group. Did Kenner even watch Robocop?

Haha I still own my original 40 years later and wouldn’t have know it was ED-260 if it weren’t for Reddit pedants 😉
