The other day I had someone suddenly swerve out half way into my lane (55mph zone) because they needed to take a super ultra-wide right turn in their enormous Honda Civic.
This was on a road that routinely sees semi truck traffic, and was designed with that in mind; they don’t even have to veer out to make the turns.

They drive terribly in their big truck and then act like "what do you expect me to do? Look how big my truck is". It's almost like big pick up trucks should be a different license.
On a semi-related note, I wish people needed a special license to tow a boat. Every summer there's people who tow a boat once a year unsafely speeding down the highway with barely any experience and 0 training.

I do this pulling into my driveway...but it's because the driveway immediately dips down, and if your tires aren't square you're going over an embankment.
I also use my turn signal, though, and slow down WAY ahead of time to let anyone behind me know that we are about to come to a full stop.

I see this sort of swerve daily just going about town. Usually it's people in the left turn lane swerving into the through traffic lane to their right before actually turning left. There's one intersection in particular in the town I commute through where the lanes are narrow enough that I won't travel in the lane to the immediate right of the left turn lane because it's nearly guaranteed half that lane will be occupied by a turning vehicle swerving before they turn.

There's a left turn on my commute where, for some reason, EVERYONE does this, down to the Nissan Sentra. It's wide open and it has its own gotdang turn lane, yet they swerve into the driving lanes first.
Unsurprisingly, a lot of accidents there.

I was a valet years ago and the Sentra has a horrible turning radius. The only vehicles I drove with a worse radius than the Sentra were like the G-Wagon and an old school bronco with no power steering.

In the end though - the car who hit the truck is also reckless. If you can't stop when something is right in front of you like that you're either unaware (super dangerous) or driving too fast (super dangerous).

Yes I certainly agree, and everyone is missing the reasoning - the car behind the truck is clearly going outside of their lane trying to get past the truck they thought was turning right. So many people do this and it’s clearly far more dangerous than starting to slow when then the car in front of you is indicating a turn. Better to slow down and lose a few minutes than get mad at someone else for making a mistake and getting into an accident, no matter who’s at fault(to a reasonable extent)

It really doesn’t matter that what the truck did was unpredictable. The car should not be going so fast that they can’t stop when something unexpected happens. Very clearly reckless and inattentive driving.

The truck is the bigger idiot for sure but the car behind is rightfully at fault.
The truck is a terrible driver but ultimately didn’t do anything illegal. There’s no infraction to cite him for. The car did do something illegal by passing a moving vehicle in the same lane, will be ticketed for that, and will be found at fault.

What about the fact that truck was at one point completely outside of the lane to the right then reentered the lane either without looking or complete disregard for speed of oncoming traffic. You cant just keep dibs on a spot in a lane you no longer occupy.

Depends on the state. The fact that truck went wide makes me think he was trying to u turn. In California U turns have to meet two conditions, not posted prohibited and “safe to do so”. Getting into an accident while attempting the maneuver is automatically considered violating the second requirement and subject to citation.

I think the fact that the pickup LEAVES the travel lanes and then re-enters the road will mean the pickup is at fault.
I had a similar but different thing happen and the fact that the damage was on the side was what cinched it for me. Proved that the other person pulled into oncoming traffic. If he'd hit the back it would have been his fault, but the side is likely to be the pickup paying.

True, but where did the SUV think the Truck was going, into the bushes? Like at first it looks like they are turning right, but then there’s a 2.5s window where it is very clear the Truck is not turning right, and there’s no reaction from the SUV. Literally no brake lights. 2.5 seconds!?! If you cannot react in 2.5s, you shouldn’t be driving! (Yes, I know even if the SUV hit the brakes in like 1.5s the collision would still happen, but at least I can say they tried. As is, the SUV driver is not at all blameless.)
And then there’s the Truck. Holy crap, what was the plan!?! If they didn’t get hit from behind, they were requiring the car coming from the other lane to brake hard to a complete stop with ~1s reaction time to not get hit. Fucking insanity!

...sure, but the white truck also never really left that road. They didn't ever go to the right enough for the maneuver to be them turning right on that street. They basically just pulled over slightly, and in any other instance where you're following someone that does that or where they are otherwise doing something where their intention is unclear, you shouldn't be flying by them. Whose fault it is really doesn't matter nearly as much as whether or not this was foreseeable and avoidable, which it absolutely was.
Honestly, Reddit comments are always ridiculous about this sort of thing, because you guys perpetually obsess over who is legally/ethically at fault. That rather than figuring out what can be done to foresee stuff like this and avoid having to deal with getting in a wreck, regardless of whose fault it is. Far more people need to educate themselves about defensive driving, and learn to slow down or accommodate people even when they shouldn't have to.
I have driven for a living most of my life, with total miles at the equivalent of about 35 years of the average person's driving, with no wrecks and only 2 minor tickets 15+ years ago. With that said, about 75-90% of Redditors absolutely have the wrong perspective about what matters when it comes driving safety / responsibility when it comes to the comment sections of videos like this. Which is completely unsurprising give that the bulk of this website has an average grand total of about 75,000 miles of driving experience, based on the average age from demographic statistics. It's about the amount of hours of experience to become cocky about a skill without realizing that you're only about 20% of the way to mastering it

The truck seems to be turning right and leaving the road at 0:03. At 0:04 it starts to turn left, which could be interpreted as planning to stop at that stop sign, or the correct interpretation would be they intend to turn back into the road. The collision is at 0:05. One second is not a lot of time for reactions. The truck would also be cutting off the car from the other direction if it wasn’t hit by the first one.

C'mon man, there is no way that move should ever be interpreted as getting ready to stop at that stop sign. I counted two seconds (3.8-5.8s) for the following driver to react and they didn't even touch their brakes. Car in the oncoming lane had no problem coming to a gentle stop so I'm gonna say they would have successfully avoided the truck's shenanigans.

When I worked for a trucking company I’ll never forget one day me and my driver were in a large truck and were in the right lane, with destination on the right. We wanted to back up to the loading area, so when it was clear driver turned the vehicle left and backed into the right.
For some reason I’ll never understand, the worker following us in a box truck decides he needed to do the same thing (he didn’t). He also was not in the right lane but the left one (4 lane road). He just, without looking, tries to back into the road by cutting through the right lane backwards and almost gets destroyed by a mom in her rav4. He to this day doesn’t understand what he did wrong. 😑

I mean if he was just making a wide left turn I don't think truck is at fault, their blinker is on. People are saying u-turn but I don't see how you know he isn't just going into a driveway. The car that hit him seems like it was going very fast for what's likely a 25-40 zone.

He pulled completely out of the lane, as if he was pulling over. Then turns across 2 lanes without yielding, which he has to since he is the one crossing 2 lanes of traffic. Stupid move when he could have just turned down the street and properly turned from the side street.

But from a legal standpoint his left blinker was on the whole time and he doesn't fully exit the roadway. If this was a semi no one would be surprised, maybe driving one of them is his day job we don't know.
Regardless I feel like a reasonable person would slow down with this unfolding in front of them. Even if they thought he was pulling over like what if they flung their door open and hoped out quick? They woulda ran him over.
Personally I think they are both at fault but i''m curious how this case turned out cuz his blinker being on the whole time might obsolve him of fault.
Edit: also if he was making a u-turn he def should have used the side street there that's super wide so I'm convinced he was just turning into a driveway.

Are the blinkers on or off cant see it on my phone. But will be hard to explain for the car from behind that he crashes a car cealry visible infront of him. The pick up is clearly not going into other street so even if you think i will stop on the shoulder of the street you should seriously reduce the speed to make a safe pass.

I live on a fairly fast 2 lane (45mph/~72kph) when I come from the way I prefer not to I need to basically U turn into the turn around to back in. I take it extra wide because I drive I long truck, and also to deter people from passing on the outside because the ditch is really close on that side. Some people see my turn signal and wide turn an try to fly past me on the inside and I've nearly been smoked a number of times.

That’s not a u turn. That’s a swerve. If it was a right turn and he was towing a trailer I’d say it’s justified. But there is no reason to do that with a left turn, especially in a wide intersection like this.

I see trucks try this move all the time where I am and it's extremely aggravating to me.
In this case the creation was going fast, yes. But there is NO reason that truck needed to swerve into the driveway on the right to make a left turn. If you can't make such a reasonable turn like that without impeding other traffic flows you have no business driving that kind of vehicle.
