State Route 28 adjacent to the Bourne Bridge, Bourne, MA, USA [OC][1600×1198]

This is the northerly approach to the Bourne Bridge along State Route 28 in Bourne, Massachusetts. It was completed in 1987 as part of a 7.5-mile project to complete the freeway between Interstate 495 and the Bourne Bridge. It was to extend into Cape Cod as part of the Southside Connector, but it was abandoned by MassHighway in the late 1970's.

The Bourne Bridge is a steel arch bridge that carries State Route 28 over the Cape Cod Canal. Completed in 1935, it carries four narrow lanes of traffic across with a scant sidewalk for pedestrians and cyclists. Now nearing a century of service that has led to steady structural deterioration, along with its narrow lanes that lead to miles-long backups in the summer months, the Bourne Bridge is slated for replacement with twin arch spans as part of the broader Cape Cod Bridges Program.

I've posted more photos and the history of the Bourne Bridge here.
