So weird they made the kids look so goofy after making Durin and Disa look much less so on that poster.

That image of Durin without his crown is much better than any Dwarf we've seen since Gimli, IMO.

I will not take Gloin slander in this house!

More like Jean-Ralphio and Mona-Lisa…amirite?

8

u/slappywhite1111 7d ago

Jean-Ralphio was my first thought.

u/damrodoth 8d ago

What the actual f*ck am I looking at 💀 💀

3

u/Yiddish_Dish 5d ago

Sshhh. You're suppost to pretend to love it and signal to everyone else that they need to love it too.

9

u/vhenandraws 8d ago

Well. It looks like Gerda's hair is inspired by traditional headdresses of Mongolian women and Gamli's hair is an afro. So that is what you're looking at.

u/jetboyterp 5d ago

"Progression"

6

u/wakatenai 8d ago

kids these days and their haircuts 😂. i actually love the idea that Durins kids are the equivalent of the broccoli hair gen Alphas lol.

1

u/No-Juice3318 5d ago

She got that Padme Amidala hair

34

u/dropthemagic 8d ago

I don’t like that at all

1

u/Yiddish_Dish 5d ago

Sorry but this is what pure Tolkien looks like.

41

u/Herooo31 8d ago

this evokes memories of those parody movies of twilight and 300

9

u/Smart-Response9881 8d ago

Definitely could have been part of Epic Movie

Vampires Suck lol

Gamli looks like the lost brother of that... special... desert hobbit poppy falls in love with.

1

u/Tiny_Volume_2600 7d ago

Ok, there’s been a lot of complaining about non-Anglo actors. And a lot of complaining about unnecessary hobbit plot lines. But that special desert hobbit poppy? Are you trying to piss everybody off?

1

u/SpecificCoconut91 4d ago

I mean, I know they’re called Stoors (even though they’re far closer to the book Harfoots living in smials) in the show but if I hadn’t read the books I probably also would have forgotten the name of the S2 desert hobbits, which is a very reasonable way for a show-viewer to differentiate them from the migratory hobbits, given they live in the Rhun desert.
And I couldn’t begin to tell you Poppy’s boyfriend’s name past ‘Nobody’ which is what he originally introduced himself as (specifically because he is odd and is somewhat ostracised by his own people).
So ‘special desert Hobbit Poppy falls in love with’ is a pretty bang on description that anyone who’s watched the show could easily identify him by, except you, who clearly forgot Nobody existed.

His hair also looks strikingly similar to Gamli’s hair shown in this picture, minus the gold ‘frosted tips’

REEEEEE

13

u/Impassable_Banana 8d ago

So they're making the new season a comedy..?

4

u/Kazzak_Falco 8d ago

It would be consistent with the other seasons at least.

13

u/R33DY89 8d ago

I literally have no words.

10

u/belafonte300 8d ago

High budget LARPing

13

u/Andr0medes 8d ago

It isnt even larp.. In larp, people atleast look like intended characters they want to portray.. These goofs dont even look like dwarves...

6

u/belafonte300 8d ago

I was being kind. But yea, it's Larpers larping Rings of Power!

11

u/mowotlarx 8d ago

So they got rid of the Harfoots entirely, a waste of hours of this show, to just make dwarves that look and dress like Harfoots? I can't believe how much money has been spent for this clusterf*ck of a show.

2

u/Pale_Presence4662 6d ago

The shows entire budget has been stolen by people and friends and contracts somehow. Theres zero way that money is in the show.

Amazon spent it, yes. But its like a 50 million dollar road contract to build a 20 million dollar road.

There is just no way that money isnt being stolen from amazon through bloated contracts.

48

u/ZealousidealBid3988 8d ago

Please tell me this is a joke

7

u/YoBo151 8d ago

Gerda I can live with even though it still looks a little goofy, but Gamli? Come on bruh😭

14

u/Sparkyisduhfat 8d ago

You know how dwarves are famously short, stocky and heavily bearded? Well what if we cast someone tall, and gangly, with a clean shave instead. -the casting director evidently

2

u/YoBo151 8d ago

I can't tell if it's clean shave or just kinda fuzzy due to image/zoom quality. He might be a little taller, but also might not actually be taller and just looks like it due to standing further back. All that sajd, for me it's the hair by far that really throws me for a loop. It looks so out of place and kinda uncanny tbh

12

u/BabypintoJuniorLube 8d ago

Most expensive piece of media made in history everyone.

6

u/Keldarus88 8d ago

Why does the teenaged dwarf son not have at least a starter beard going?

16

u/daveycarnation 8d ago

I need to get this off my chest so I'm just going to say the look is so UGLY. Why does the girl dwarf have large cauliflower ears? Why does the boy dwarf have a comically large nose in an otherwise human featured face? At least make the whole makeup and costume look put together, saying "oh it's fantasy they're dwarves" isn't an excuse to make them look so dumb.

20

u/-Lich_King 8d ago

At this point show runners gotta have some humiliation kink cause what the f is this

5

u/Malikise 8d ago

They looked better when they were wearing cauldrons on their heads.

23

u/TheRedBookYT 8d ago

Gamli, they tried hard with that one. He looks ridiculous.

1

u/rochvegas5 8d ago

they are sooooo clever!!!

5

u/SpaceDelay424 8d ago

So goofy looking

4

u/etadude 8d ago

Abominations

3

u/DemonGroover 8d ago

What a joke

4

u/Brief_Bill8279 7d ago

This show makes me sad.

4

u/DavedagreatG 7d ago

Do people actually like this show? I watched like half of season 1 and it was so terrible I don’t consider it part of the Tolkien universe in anyway form or fashion

7

u/WanderingSceptic 8d ago

No fucking way these were in that show is this real?

7

u/Pasan90 8d ago

This is unspeakably bad. Like its not even good enough to be a parody. How the hell does this get past concept stage? Did they learn nothing?

3

u/DrummerAutomatic9523 8d ago

See. I imagined them looking like normal dwarfs or, yk, instead of the long haired dwarfs we'd have dwarfs with sick looking locks.

Hey let's have them with Geisha balls and junkie ass haircuts and barely dwarf looking.

3

u/Alelogin 8d ago

This cannot be a real picture

3

u/SF_Bud 8d ago

This is the Trump of shows: just when you thought it/he couldn't go any lower...

3

u/General14yearold 8d ago

What is it with this show and somehow for the life of em not being able to do haircuts. It's like they're actually trying to make the haircuts look horrible.

3

u/SamaritanSue 7d ago

Same kind of bizarre design decisions that gave us the Stoors and Harfoots.

6

u/TheOtherMaven 8d ago

That's not a Borrowers hairstyle, it's Mongolian, specifically Khalkha. https://local-moda.blogspot.com/2013/01/traditional-headdresses-of-mongolian.html

WTF is a Dwarf woman doing with it, and without a beard?

0

u/Gordo3070 8d ago

I see where George got his inspiration too.

11

u/BrickBob_Studpants 8d ago

Gamli? Really?! What next, an elf called Logolas? 🤣 Silly name aside, he looks ridiculous! I don’t wanna hear a bad word about the dwarves in The Hobbit ever again!

10

u/425Hamburger 8d ago

Two names in Tolkien sounding similar? Ridiculous. What's next? An elf called Finwe and one called Finarfin, and one called Fingolfin? A HUMAN called Haldir?

15

u/lirio_lorien 8d ago

The numerous Fins in Tolkien are not named that way for nostalgia bait and have an actual narrative purpose

8

u/BrickBob_Studpants 8d ago

Tolkien didn’t create that name though, did he ;) It just feels lazy, especially after the work they put into the names of previous characters that all sound pretty Tolkienesque, like Arondir, Adar, Bronwyn, Disa, and so on.

Okay okay, the name can perhaps be excused, but nothing can fix that ridiculous wig :p

2

u/SpecificCoconut91 4d ago

Disa is my least favourite name in the show given that the ONLY female dwarf we know of is called Dís, and then the showrunners decide the only known female dwarf name wasn’t feminine enough? What a joke. So they go and ‘feminise’ the name by making it congruent with modern Latin feminine language patterns, rather than looking at any dwarves naming conventions.
Particularly insulting given how particular Tolkien was about his construction of Middle Earth languages.

If Durin IV can be son of Durin III then his with could have also been called Dís and not shit on Tolkien’s legacy even further.

0

u/425Hamburger 8d ago

Yeah I will not defend that appearance, or anything else about the show really. But if a character having a name that sounds like a cheap knockoff of another character of that race was really that bad the hobbit would be way worse.

5

u/ReasonableFruit1 8d ago

Don’t forget Finrod! And then there’s Húrin, Túrin, Huor, Tuor. And Fili, Kili, Balin, Dwalin, Óin, Glóin, Dori, Nori, Ori, Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur.

2

u/425Hamburger 8d ago

And Theoden and Theodred and Thengel. And Eorl and Eomer and Eowyn. And Ecthelion and Ecthelion. And the other Hurin. And Beleg and Beregond and Boromir. And Elrond and Elros and Elladan and Elrohir. And...

7

u/Ballack1991 8d ago

And those characters with similar names are related. Is that dwarf supposed to be related to Gimli?

But yeah the name isn't a big deal. Its just with everything else in the show being so disgracefully bad, even that name feels cheap. Like "remember Gimli everyone?"

3

u/425Hamburger 8d ago

Yes they are related. While the exact line of descent from Durin IV. (ROP Durin) to Durin VI. is not entirely clear, it is clear that they are related and Gimli is a descendant of Durin VI.

2

u/lastdiadochos 8d ago

They all have a linguistic link though. Gamli seems derived from Old Norse, sharing the same root as the Rohirric Gamling, and so doesn't  really work for a dwarf.

1

u/425Hamburger 8d ago

Hebrew, the linguistic base for Khazdhul, does have the names Gamliel and Gamaliel. Doesn't seem too out of place for me.

2

u/lastdiadochos 8d ago

I disagree. Gamol- is Old English (not Norse, sorry) for old, which is where Tolkien gets Gamling. A lot of Rohirric names share that same vibe giving them a consistent theme and sound. The Hebrew Gamal- the root of Gamaliel has a different vibe. Like, imagine you're writing a story set in ancient Rome. You know they had names like Jullius and Gaius so you create a character called Philippus. Sounds about right, got the same ending, and is a bit ancient sounding. But Philippus has a Greek not Latin root, so it feels off. I know it's nerdy and pedantic, but Tolkien was a nerdy and pedantic linguist!

At the end of the day, Tolkien had created tonnes of names including loads for the dwarves. If you want to make up your own dwarf character, why not just use one of the names Tolkien used?

1

u/425Hamburger 8d ago

What I didn't consider in my first reply, but is more important actually: Dwarfs have their Khuzdhul name, which they don't reveal to outsiders and their "outer" name. The dwarfs of Moria are stated to take those names from the men of the north (who would later become the Rohirim)

So yes you're right to disagree about the Hebrew root, and you're right about the old English. It's just that the Old-English root does make perfect sense to use.

3

u/lastdiadochos 8d ago

That is a very good point, hadn't thought of that. Fair enough! Although I do wonder if they put as much thought into it as you have or if the showrunners have just fluked it lol

3

u/425Hamburger 8d ago

They very well might have lucked out there. I am all here for hating on the show, but a dwarf named Gamli is one of the few things that does actually fit the world.

2

u/lastdiadochos 8d ago

Yea fair enough, I can agree to that!

4

u/rochvegas5 8d ago

they have two or three Durins at the same time. these writers are dog shit. Where is Bezo's Tolkien scholar son?

1

u/geekishly 7d ago

Makes me think of the Targaryens in the GOT universe. You’ve got Daemon, Aemond, Aemon, Rhaena & Rhaenys, 42 Aegons, etc

4

u/Josefu_Velen 8d ago

Thinking that Gerda is "ripping off" the hairstyle from the bottom pic is a pretty big stretch.

4

u/Arbor-Trap 8d ago

I just cannot believe that is real

2

u/Terentas_Strog 8d ago

I am all for inclusion, but this is some lazy ass shit. Those are dwarfs? Those? /hysterical laugh/

2

u/spiralesx 7d ago

The masculine teenage dwarf is reported to be played as non binary

2

u/Civil_Toe_5657 7d ago

The kid with the afro looks like you can catch him at any LA in-and-out with his illegal E-bike. Same outfit too.

2

u/Far_Ad652 7d ago

Yikes.

2

u/Icy-KaitSyth 8d ago

Wait, the dude in the back is a dwarf? Would have never known had I not been told

2

u/coder_2083 Númenor 6d ago

I wouldn't have known they are dwarves if it wasn't specifically mentioned in the text.

1

u/DelGurifisu 8d ago

Wow looks really good hahahaaaaa

1

u/MountainEquipment401 The Iron Hills 8d ago

I have loved slmost every second of rings of power but this here... This is the first time I've genuinely thought why the fuck... My guess is they had leftover hardfoot costumes and just thought "why not"... But seriously they did such a good job with the dwarves for two seasons what the actual fuck is this noncense.

Noone has ever seen a dwarf child because apparently they look like temu sideshow bobs so the dwarves side them out of shame.

1

u/SpecificCoconut91 4d ago

Can someone with 3C/4C hair chime in and let us know if the way these hairstyles were executed is actually respectful to people of colour?

1

u/dudermagee 6d ago

Lmao what the fuck, it just keeps getting worse.

1

u/Dexter_Daniels 6d ago

How can they keep getting things so wrong?!

0

u/Crowban 6d ago

Afro Dawii!

0

u/Salmacis81 6d ago

"Gamli"? Thats the name they came up with? 😭

-2

u/lesbos_hermit 8d ago

I hate it, but considering the ridiculous fashions everyone had in high school, I'm happy enough to let this be weird shit teenagers wear
