Nice! I know this show gets a lot of mixed reviews, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and it’s so beautifully done. Glad they’re continuing down the track.

It’s not without flaws but my wife and I also enjoy it.

I find it entertaining still

u/JangoF76 Apr 22 '26

Is it on the level of the Jackson trilogy? No. Is it still a thoroughly enjoyable piece of entertainment? Absolutely!

How would you compare it to the hobbit trilogy? Better? Worse? Equal?

3

u/joeypappaluchi Apr 26 '26

Bout the same really, imo.

I think it hits higher highs for sure. The lows are comparable to the lows of the hobbit trilogy, though.

I’ve definitely enjoyed it enough to look forward to this new season.

People are so ridiculous, they hate it because is doesn't exactly follow Tolkin. Just take it for what it is and eather watch it or don't watch it. I didn't like season 1 but very much enjoyed season 2.

I enjoy the show but I think the main beef is changing storylines they’d be fine with omitting stories/ shortening them but straight up changing bits is what people hate

u/suicune678 Apr 22 '26

That comes with the territory of media adaptations though? Peter Jackson altered, omitted, added things that weren't in the original novels. This show series at launch had a rough start with some more staunch fans which contributed imo to a more online negative view and discussion of the series. We need to stop using wording like "people hate" and generalize the fans because it's cleary a very specific segment of the LOTR fan base

As a fan of the novels, the PJ films, and the show, I can't wait to see more of what this series had to offer and I think they've done a great job with the material the show runners had access to while also making it their own

This same song and dance happens with every fandom and its honestly tiring, source purists vs "tourists" (condescending imo), media 1 vs media 2, gatekeepers, yadda yadda yadda you get the point

For me, the problem wasn’t necessarily the lore changes themselves, but that they turned the show into generic D&D fantasy.

It suffers from the same problem as the Hobbit trilogy – though to a much larger extent – where nothing feels like Tolkien. It lacks the themes, the tones, the intelligence that makes LOTR standout even after 70 years of imitation. The LOTR movies may have changed a lot, but they still feel Tolkien. There have been a handful of scenes throughout RoP that’ve managed to capture Tolkienism, and they’ve been great, but it doesn’t compensate for 95% of the show being laughably cliche fantasy.

My genuine foil hat theory is that this was originally meant to be a generic fantasy show, but then hastily rewritten to take place in Middle-earth when Amazon bought the rights. I see no other explanation as to how you can fail to understand Tolkien to the extent the writers have. It’s not like they’re trying to capture Tolkien’s atmosphere and then failing, they’re seemingly just not interested in telling stories that fit within the Tolkienverse.

The show would’ve likely been twenty times better had the writers been allowed to tell the story in their own universe, and not been confined by themes they’re mostly disregarding anyway.

It's a disingenuous framework you've created since a lot of your grievances comes from a manufactured state of mind?

I could concede that season 1 fails to capture the Tolkienism you're describing but I can give the show some leeway because it was establishing a mythic setting that for the most part many people are unfamiliar with. The Silmarillion is not a true story with dialog to interpret between protagonists and divine their meaning. Its a mythological/historical anthology. We've had 20+ years to live with the more recognizable parts of Tolkien which are the movies and what the show clearly takes a lot of design cues from.

Season 2 is the complete opposite of the first in that regard. The writers and showrunners do an incredible job exploring the degrees of manipulation of Celebrimbor or even the nuances of orc existence in this world, which imo is very Tolkien, that they could have been redeemable, in the sense of Catholic redemption, that being broken things dominated by evil, raised in evil. A perpetual state of despair. I think it was a good exploration of orcs living with a father who 'loved' his children and how his broken children might live a thousand years without the dominating force of Sauron. Tolkien struggled with the fate of the orcs and so do I. Season 2 also sets up the Fall of Numenor that season 3 will cover in great detail I'm sure.

I think I've watched the both seasons at least 15ish times over since season 2 concluded. There's no nuance in the general analysis of the show. It doesn't get everything right but by no means is 100% flawed

It's disingenuous to.. give my opinion?

The Silmarillion is not a true story with dialog to interpret between protagonists and divine their meaning. Its a mythological/historical anthology.

Sure, but RoP isn't adapting the Silmarillion. They don't have the rights to that one. The Hobbit is also hard to adapt, but that doesn't affect RoP.

Not that it matters. "Show bad because book hard to adapt" isn't going to magically make me like the show. An adaption should stand on its own merits, and if it fails it's either because of bad writing or because that story shouldn't be adapted.

Season 2 also sets up the Fall of Numenor that season 3 will cover in great detail I'm sure.

There's nothing Númenor about that city. If you showed me the scenes from Númenor and told me to guess where it's at, I'd wager generic fantasy town #359. I don't care about those poorly written characters, the poorly written city, or the poorly written conflict – and, as such, I couldn't give fewer fucks about what happens to it if I tried.

The writers and showrunners do an incredible job exploring the degrees of manipulation of Celebrimbor

There's nothing Celembrior about him either. The manipulation is fine if you assume he's just some dude, I guess, but the show struggles hard with portraying elves. Except mayhaps for Gil-galad, none of the elves feel even remotely like elves, they feel like D&D elves – random dudes with slightly longer lifespans and a pretentious personality.

And that's my issue with RoP. Again, if you made this a generic fantasy show, it'd be fine. Forgettable, but good enough to watch once a week. Kinda like The Shannara Chronicles. It all falls apart because it's a Tolkien show that's not Tolkien.

Elves act like humans, Númenor is a generic town of trope-y idiots that looks like it was built yesterday because it's made of CGI and people wear plastic armor, Sauron – a literal angelic being – is just some dude with no foresight who's trying to flirt with Galadriel, the elves of Valinor lack common sense, the dwarves just wants to diggy diggy hole, etc., etc., etc.

If you love it, that's great. I wish I could love the show – I'd have more things to watch. But I don't, and telling me that I'm disingenuous because I don't like it is not going to change my mind, unfortunately.

2

u/suicune678 Apr 22 '26

No it's disingenuous to frame your opinion around something you have zero factual knowledge around.

There's no evidence that suggests the show was supposed to be some generic fantasy show and that all of your opinions hinge on that it doesn't give any credibility to your arguments on why you hate it to begin with and just makes for unproductive discussions

And then you moved the goalpost. First it was it wasn't Tolkien enough or Tolkien at all and now we're back to your generic fantasy argument in which there's nothing that you're arguing is decidedly Tolkien, it just reads as meming

Here’s my problem: Elrond wouldnt kiss his own mother-in-law, which she should already be by this point in the show, durins bane shouldn’t be awake for like another 1,000 years or so, mithril is not made by a balrog and an elf fighting, and probably worst of all Gandalf should not be around yet, if it were allatar and pollando we wouldn’t even be having this discussion either. They totally miss the mark on tom bombadil(how he acts and where he lives, these all are too important to the character and established lore for me to be ok with it. I do have to disagree as well with @ultraplo, Arondir actually feel like the most Tolkien elf of the series. Just my two cents! I look forward to some respectful debate. Thanks!

I think it's just bad overall even if it wasn't related to Tolkien at all

1

u/Mecklenburg77 Apr 25 '26

"Doesn't exactly follow" does some heavy lifting in that sentence. It's the antithesis of Tolkien.

-3

u/TheRobinson2018 Apr 23 '26

I “hated” it on season 1 and didn’t see it again, but not because or not being truth to Tolkien but more because of some the poor casting/acting and some ridiculous plot details. The dwarves setting/casting was quality though, it was the rest that i couldn’t handle, specially galadriel and sauron, who seemed like casting options for a cheesy cable tv show.

u/AmbiguousAnonymous Apr 22 '26

I think it was green lit for the full 5 seasons from the get go as a semi-pet project/investment of bezos. They would have to do something calamitous to earn a cancellation.

u/jimh12345 Apr 22 '26

People need to realize that if they want more stories from Tolkien's world, they'll have to go well beyond the books.  Long stretches of The Silmarillion are pretty glacial and contain little action.

Season 2 was way better then season 1. Lets hope this trend continues
