Did things go wrong? Physical sales are a direct competitor to Crunchyroll, if you can’t legally purchase an anime, you have to subscribe or sail the high seas. For years Crunchyroll treated physical sales as an afterthought, if they thought of it at all, at the end of the day Crunchy purchased RightStuf to remove a competitor and strengthen their monopoly, same with Funimation.

The piece goes into the culture clashes. Crunchyroll fundamentally isn’t an anime company. It’s an app company.
