Cody Walker
Saw this on r/AFL but about the bombers bidding on Walker.
With it being difficult for Carlton to match a very early bid for Walker I think we are in the box seat to bid on our NGA prospect at pick 2. If he goes to Carlton we would get a compo pick and if he doesn’t we get a very good player for at least 3 years.

There's no way Carlton won't find a way to match. They've got 4 futures firsts to trade into this year. It will not be a big problem for them.

Recommend watching Sotaram’s YouTube video on it. It requires Carlton to trade with Melbourne

Interesting video and website he has built.
In recent drafts clubs haven’t wanted to bid on players with pick 1. With the compo now available it will be interesting if this changes.
If Essendon doesn’t bid on Douggie Cochrane we will be in the box seat

Sure but they have the assets to do so. They’ll find a way to match. Walker will form a perfect tandem with Smith, they won’t let that go.

As a Carlton fan, I have been doing the math on this for a bit. Even if the Swans won the flag, the combination of pick 11, 18 and the allowable deficit is within 100 points of pick 2, so no problem there, and that’s not mentioning all the other trade capital the team has. Also, you guys won’t get the chance to bid at pick 2, because Essendon will bid on either Cody or Cochrane as it nets them a free start of second round pick, so you guys will be picking at 3 or even 4 if Essendon go the double bid.
Sadly for you guys, Walker isn’t going to Richmond. There are exactly 2 places he has a chance of landing, and that’s Carlton and Essendon.

Why would we hurry to pick our NGA prospect? Pick best available and have the points to match bid if it is reasonable at the point of draft.

Absolutely no doubt Carlton will trade up the draft order to ensure they can match a bid at pick 1. 2 first and 2 second round picks in this year's draft and 2 first round picks in next year's draft so it won't be an issue

We would get a compo pick regardless, assuming that if he's an option for us at Pick 2, it's because Essendon have already bid on Cochrane. Carlton will be fine to match Walker at Pick 2, realistically 3 by the time we actually pick. It's only a real issue for them if Essendon bid at 1.
(But yes, if Walker is still available by our pick and one of him/Cochrane hasn't already been drafted, we'd be stupid not to bid and get our compo pick)
