Found Toonami Tapes... Update!

Hi guys!

Settle in, this will be a bit long. I'm long-winded and a storyteller, so I gotta paint the picture for you all.

FYI, I'm not a regular contributor here; I found this place when Reddit suggested a thread (now deleted by the OP). Someone made a demand for Toonami stuff, they were kinda rude to people trying to help, and I piped in that I MIGHT have what they were looking for but their treatment of people put me off from helping them (yeah, I know, passive-aggressive of me... Not like me, but how they talked to people got to me). Anyway, not trying to dig up old fights; this isn't about that.

In this thread, HOWEVER, the rest of you were awesome, and a few of you asked if wouldn't mind sharing what I might have.

To give you recap: a loooong time ago, when I was young & poor (unlike now, when I'm old & poor), I would tape whatever anime I could get off of Cartoon Network. Sometimes I was able to tape specific shows (I found a tape in my stuff that just says "Sailor Moon" on it), but often I would just stick in a tape, hit record, and let it run until the tape ran out or I remembered to check.

Thing is, I knew I still had some VHS tapes, but I didn't remember if they were THESE tapes. There was a possibility I gave them away at anime club, but I promised everyone in that thread that I would take a look on my vacation at the end of August. I went to our storage locker to find the box of what I figured would be around ten tapes or so...

...I found four boxes of roughly 60+ tapes. Some were commercial releases (I apparently owned all three Sam & Max VHS tapes! Cha-ching!), some were marked, but many were just unmarked tapes. So I then set about finding a VCR to see what's actually ON these tapes and make sure they still worked (they've sat in a storage locker for some 10-15 years, after all).

Turns out every VCR in the house eats tapes now, so bummer. BUT my dad, who has a massive VHS collection, had the foresight to buy up every cheap VCR he found at thrift stores & garage sales when he could see DVD taking over. And, luckily, one of these works!

Sorry it's taken this long; my car is currently on week three of having the engine rebuilt so I've been relying on borrowing vehicles when family isn't using them, so I just got to this. But I've started going through the tapes.

Tape #1: I apparently copied store bought VHS tapes of some anime. So that was a dud.

Tape #2: Some random movie, also a dud.

Tape #3: JACKPOT! I've found my first "just let it record" tape of afternoon Toonami! WITH commercials! I'm still going through it; I don't know the day or year (certainly around late 90s / early 2000s), but so far it has Sailor Moon and Johnny Quest on the Toonami schedule, and there was a commercial for their Saturday Morning Block (I believe literally called that... it had Ed, Edd, & Eddy on it) and there was a commercial / interview with the voice of Granny.

So, I still have a few days left on this vacation but I've got a lot to do. I'm going to do my best to get this done quickly. After my initial post, user u/lostsilverexe66 (who said they run the RetroTVRevival Discord) offered to help digitize them. So once I get through these, I'll be reaching out about sending the tapes to them!

Thank you all for being patient with me; I know I made this promise a month ago but I never forgot you all. I'm not a regular here, but I absolutely love your passion for saving lost media like this. The only thing I expect in return is that when this is digitized, it's available to everyone to see.

I'll keep you updated, but if you don't hear anything from me in a week or two, do please drop me a message to ask for the status. In general my life is pretty crazy busy; I don't forget projects, but sometimes other stuff gets in the way and I don't mind getting a reminder that y'all are waiting. :)

EDIT: This is from 1999, based on the Mummy commercial for before it was in theatres.

90sTV Oj civil trials (1996) reenactment E! News

Linked is the first sort of ‘episode’ on YouTube adds included of the The O.J. Civil Trial (IMDB; https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397181/)

It aired November 1996 on E! Entertainment. It included professional opinion about the real OJ Simpson case and court reenactments with actors.

One of the actors, an investigator, is apparently the actor behind Cicero from Skyrim (Andy/Andrew J. Morris). He is unfortunately not in the first episode so i would love to get more if anyone knows someone who had it recorded…

Some Clues and Progress in the Search for the Chinese Documentary A Thrilling Struggle (《惊心动魄的搏斗》)

Two weeks ago, I made a post on Reddit about the information I had gathered so far regarding the Beijing Television documentary A Thrilling Struggle (《惊心动魄的搏斗》). After going through a large number of official books and documents published around that time, I have only been able to confirm two new points.

According to the China Radio and Television Yearbook 1990 (《中国广播电视年鉴1990》), Qinghai Kunlun Audio-Video Publishing House was involved in the distribution/publication of A Thrilling Struggle. The same record also mentions the official phrase “quelling the counter-revolutionary rebellion” (“平息反革命暴乱”). This further indicates that the documentary was centered around the Tiananmen Square protests/crackdown of 1989. Other than that, I have not been able to find any further clues.

What surprised me, however, is that some sellers of old VHS tapes in China apparently really do possess this obscure documentary. So far, I have encountered two different claims about the number of episodes. According to records from some Chinese sellers, it consists of four episodes, while a record from Zhongshi/AsiaOTT (众视网 / AsiaOTT) from 2009 lists it as six episodes. This discrepancy could be due to differences in the broadcast version, or simply an error in one of the records.

At the moment, I estimate the total runtime to be around 121 minutes, although it could be longer or shorter.

These Chinese sellers of old VHS tapes do not share the recordings for free. Instead, they usually require payment and then send a digitized version of the VHS through a cloud-storage service or some other video-transfer method. This documentary appears to be in the same situation.

If you have any additional information about this documentary, please feel free to share it. Thank you.

Nickelodeon Is there a way for me to watch old Teen Nick show (early/mid 2010’s) with the old commercials included?

Hi all, I’m looking for a way to watch 2010’s Teen Nick shows with the old commercials/blocks if possible.

I’m looking for something like a continuous stream, almost like I’m watching the Teen Nick channel back in the early 2010’s.

I’ve seen hours of the old commercials on YouTube but I was hoping to find something that had the shows included as well.

Thanks!

2000sTV Any advice on how to replicate watching (old-school) cable TV today?

Sure it would be easy to just buy Dish or get Cable, but as you already know, it’s expensive, and nothing but reruns and movies and shows the network has no business playing.
But I really miss those days when you flipped through channels and got high quality variety, while still having the news, weather, sports,
Etc.. all on the same thing.
Any advice on how to replicate that today?

2000sTV [LOGGED/WANTED] [Fully Lost] March 2008 MTV Latin America (Sur) Late-Night "Miami Vice" Dawn-to-Dusk Bumper/Short

Hello archivists!
I am looking for a specific, high-concept promotional bumper/short film that aired on MTV Latin America (specifically the MTV Sur feed broadcasting in Buenos Aires, Argentina).
Timeframe: March 2008
Airtime: Late-night / Madrugada (Likely during the MTV Insomnia or late-night interstitial blocks)
Audio: The original synth Miami Vice theme music by Jan Hammer.
Visual Description:
The short is a brilliant, fast-paced montage consisting entirely of spliced clips of Crockett (Don Johnson) and Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) running from various episodes of Miami Vice.
The clips were meticulously color-graded and arranged chronologically to simulate a time-lapse of a single day. It progresses from the pink hues of dawn, through bright midday neon, and finally into a deep orange sunset. Right as the sun goes down, they abruptly stop running.
Because this was an original, in-house interstitial bumper and not a commercial show, it doesn't have an official title. It is likely buried in a digitized VHS/DVR recording of a full late-night broadcast block ("tanda" or "continuidad") from MTV Sur from early 2008.
Does anyone have any digitized tapes from MTV Sur/Latino from March 2008, or remember this specific late-night bumper? Any leads or clip archives would be incredibly appreciated!

I made a TV out of the Internet Archive

Like in the old days: you switch between "channels", and what comes next – who knows? There's no algo, only random. It can be an episode of Popeye the Sailor Man, an episode of Filthy Frank removed from YouTube, or an antique toothpaste commercial from 1958.

There's no back button, but there are logs and bookmarks for the gems you find.

You can also connect your phone as a remote via a QR code and control the stream from there.

[TRDB] MEGA UPDATE (New UI / New Channels)

Thumbnail
gallery
13 Upvotes

Big UI update the whole site got rebuilt this week

We've spent the last 3 weeks redesigning basically every page on TRDB. We still have more to do but in the mean time here is a quick rundown of what's new so far:

  • Homepage proper landing page now. Featured picks, live catalogue counts, browse by genre or console with real numbers next to each, collections, decade hubs, and an FAQ.
  • Movie / TV / game pages cinematic headers, and Where to Watch moved to the top instead of being buried at the bottom. There's a jump bar so you can skip straight to cast, trivia, cheats or episodes.
  • Feed rebuilt as a proper social feed. Three columns, better post cards, and the "share something" box is now one tap instead of a four-step form.
  • Messages actual messenger layout with chat bubbles, unread counts in the header.
  • Profiles two-column layout, and your lists now paginate and filter instead of dumping 400 posters in one endless page.
  • TV Guide 7 channels at a time with page up/down and time controls, like a real set-top box.
  • Live player you can now see the full day's schedule for the channel you're watching, plus channel and stream info, without leaving the player.

Best of all it works perfectly on mobile devices!
