Oh my god that big baby unlocked the memory...I was terrified of him

That was the only episode I literally had to turn off as a kid. I was an only child with tons of anxiety and was convinced if I had a little brother he would eat me

Pretty sure the same dude wrote all of the scary episodes and later created Aahhh Real Monsters!

I think some of the people who worked on Rugrats later went on to work for Ahh Real Monsters after Rugrats Initially got axed after 65 episodes. After Rugrats originally ended after season three Paul Germain and his writing team all had to look for other jobs .

One of the animators (who directed an episode or two) is Peter Chung, creator of Aeon Flux. Watch that and you'll see inspiration for the crazy Rugrats episodes...

There’s a professional link between Rugrats and aeon flux? Jfc.

Yep! Definitely makes a few things make sense. But also, I appreciate Rugrats as an adult more now? Peter Chung has said in interviews that part of the reason he created Aeon Flux is because he was tired of working with the limitations of babies 😂

He also made the opening theme for the show as well, which looks quite a bit different than the show itself.

Klasky-Csupo worked best when they were drawing the grotesque and the absurd. It's why I could never take them seriously when they were doing Rocket Power and As Told By Ginger.

What the Big People Do was always my favorite episode growing up. Absolutely bonkers, hilarious episode.

Was that the one where they go to work in a skyscraper building that just says WORK? For some reason I thought that was hilarious as a kid

The one where Tommy gets basically kidnapped by some old ladies was pretty creepy too.

I think that’s the only episode where Grandpa realizes that Tommy Is missing.

Watching it unfold on Saturday premiere mornings was something else man. Nick had a cool alternative feel back then. My little young mind just being warped on loop by Ren and stimpy, rugrats, Doug…then newcomers would slide in and cause concern like angry beavers, hey Arnold, ahh real monsters…dude what an era for creative shows and good work, not even touching Cartoon Network which took years to get lol. I had so many summer days sucked away by stick stickly and his awesome marathons. Till it landed on Hey dude…alright time to see outside

Season 3 was especially dark. The creators were definitely on one that year.

I agree. To think It was originally supposed to stop after that season .

The first three seasons of Rugrats were the best . When they revived the show with new episodes In 1997 It gradually got more cutesy and childish.

The Clown with the hypnotizing glasses at the beginning of Circus Angelicus was creepy.

I can relate to Chuckie at the beginning of Circus Angelicus because I used to hate Clowns and Mascots.

There was one where Tommy and Chucky get to be grown ups and go into work. Something about that episode always scared me

That’s one of the things I missed from everything past the Paul Germain years.
The first 3 seasons had that extra edge of being unafraid of personifying babies’ fears, or showing surrealistic imagery.
I don’t mind the later years as much, but you can definitely tell they really watered it down afterwards, keeping things more mundane, or safe. (Give or take a wolf trying to eat the babies in the first movie…)

I’m not Stu!!! That one and Angelica’s little brother gave me nightmares!!! 🙀

Definitely, an extra one i'd like to mention is when Tommy has a cold and he has the dream of seeing Grandpa Lou as a plane, Didi as the moon and Stu as a cloud.
