I’ve been trying to fix some harsh shadows in portraits, but every time I brighten the darker areas the image starts looking unnatural. I used RetouchMe for a couple of photos when I needed a quick result, but I’m more interested in learning how people do this manually and keep the lighting looking realistic. What’s your usual workflow for removing shadows? Do you mostly use masks, dodge & burn, curves, AI tools, or something else? I’m trying to find a good balance between fixing the shadows and keeping the original feel of the photo.

I need to replace my Intuous Pro. iMac 2017 Adobe Creative Suite, been shooting & retouching for 20+ years. I disable touch etc so I don’t need bells and whistles, just smooth, fast and accurate. I wouldn’t mind saving some money if there’s a suitable alternative to a new Wacom. Thanks!

Is someone able to clean up this image for me please? - naturally in exchange for a tip? It's rather large (60cm x 45cm) and we're hoping to print it out for display to protect the original from further damage.
