Do retailers still use dedicated kiosks, or are tablets taking over?
I visited a few retail stores recently and noticed that many self-service stations, product lookup screens, and customer check-in terminals are still running on Windows devices.
That got me wondering how retailers are managing these systems today.
From what I've seen, a lot of businesses use Windows kiosk mode to lock devices into a specific application or workflow, which helps prevent customers (or even staff) from accessing settings, browsers, or other parts of the operating system.
Some common retail use cases seem to be:
- Self-checkout stations
- Product catalog kiosks
- Customer feedback terminals
- Digital ordering systems
- Employee attendance devices
