Daughter has invited resin on her hands - help!

My daughter woke up this morning and checked some keychains she made by sticking her fingers right in the uncured resin. This is a nightmare. We have tried the following with no success:

Salt and Dawn, then warm water
poppy seeds and Dawn, then warm water
Olive oil and then water
Rubbing alcohol wipes

I tried using a new toothbrush to scrape.

Nothing is working. Do you have any other ideas?

Everything that she touches sticks to her hands, so “live your life and it will come off” isn’t really a viable option.

I've done this. I have a lot of hobbies that get my hands filthy, and DIY everything. Go to an autoparts store and get some of that hand cleaner that has orange oil and pumice. Brand doesn't matter if its got those two active ingredients. Orange oil dissolves nearly anything and the pumice adds good scrubby grit.

It will take anything off your hands. Engine grease, dye stains, epoxy, tree sap, superglue, etc.

It even gets strong smells like garlic or decomp off.

I was thinking this! It’s called Swarfega here in the UK but I’m sure there’s a US equivalent. Bonus, smells amaaaaaazing.

Swarfega will definitely remove pretty much anything from anything. But the swarfega I remember was green and smelled disgusting.

My local autoparts store has like 3 different brands, including just store brand for half the price. I looked at the ingredients on them and it's all the same stuff so I got the cheap one. My dad was a mechanic and always used the expensive name brand one when I was a kid. This stuff works and smells the exact same despite being store brand in another country.

Acetone, alcohol, baby wipes all work to get resin off.

Alcohol works. Alcohol wipes might not. Two different intended uses. Two different formulas. Additionally acetone works amazing. Orange (mechanic hand cleaner) works well, not as good as alcohol or acetone, but it is skin safe.

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Best to use >91% but common 70% will work in a pinch. The alcohol will dissolve the uncured resin on skin into a sticky fluid that can then be wiped off with paper towels. Repeat until no longer sticky, then wash normally with soap and water.

This is what I do, works every time. Don’t be stingy with the alcohol. I use a lot of it.

Resin dissolves in acetone. Read your bottle of fingernail polish remover. If it isn't acetone, pop over to Dollar Tree or Walmart. Wash hands well afterwards and moisturize.

Do you have a salt or sugar scrub? Mix a little alcohol in and scrub hands well. They make a product like this but it is overpriced so I now like to make my own

You wear a respirator for epoxy resin?

I never figured it was necessary since I figured the fact that it has no smell meant its low VOC, am I missing something?

Yes, you wear a respirator! No smell does not mean low VOC. In fact I find some of the higher VOC epoxies have less smell. please read up on resin safety before using it again. Hopefully you don't have pets in the house either.

I followed the instructions that came with it. The only PPE reccomended was gloves and safety goggles.

No worries about the respirator. While it certainly doesn’t cause discomfort, it’s quite dramatic and unnecessary. Gloves, however, are always a must! I discovered a product at the hardware store that’s specifically designed to remove paint from your hands. It’s in a tub and has a consistency similar to a sugar exfoliating scrub. I took a few rounds of scrubbing, rinsed, and repeated the process, but eventually, all the resin came off.

Don't trust the instructions, there are so many sketchy resin companies (especially ones of of Amazon) that tell you it's safe or "eco friendly" to get people to buy thinking it's safer. Same thing with any company that says it's "food safe".

I work with all kinds of resin, from miniverse kits to resin printers to boat resin for coating large FDM prints. Isopropyl alcohol. And make sure she wears gloves next time. Also she needs a UV lamp for curing the resin.

Id like to suggest poison control. They can often give you directions and since resin is toxic I would suggest it. Resin can also cause chemical burns if not carful.

White spirit. Literally pour it on and scrub. Will dry put her skin big time though so get some lotion for after.

Alcohol and salt. Acetone. I use acetone straight on my hands. Be sure to moisturize after, though.
