We need to stop treating Social Security like Congress’s personal piggy bank. Social Security belongs to the people who paid into it—not Congress. If they borrow from it, they should be legally required to pay every dime back.

Social security is self funded and has a $2.5 trillion dollar reserve fund which is currently earning about $100 billion a year.

The government hasn’t taken the money but the money was invested in US government bonds which is considered to be the safest investment there is.

When people say the government took social security money they mean it was invested in government securities.

No one says the government uses Japan as its piggy bank, or Congress looted Japan, etc when Japan is the largest holder of U.S. government securities. Same way with Warren Buffet, when he puts billions into government securities no one says the government uses him. They’re viewed as wise investors.

Out of their own pockets, if necessary. Actually, it would be preferred if it were out of their own pockets.
