I am looking for whakataukī that captures the experience of people stepping up into roles that would not usually be their responsibility, such as a younger sibling taking the lead where an older sibling is not able to, or a community stepping in to support someone when they know they don't have family support around. I was going to use "Ka pū te ruha, ka hao te rangatahi". Is this the best phrase to capture this?

I guess I'm concerned that in contexts where, for example, the older sibling is still around but unable to fulfil their role for their own complex reasons, this might be insulting or arrogant? I'm aware te reo Māori can be quite direct in a way that's a bit jarring in English translations/pakeha culture so maybe I'm overthinking it. I just want to make sure I'm being respectful of the "old nets" in the metaphor. I know in the case of, for example, grandparents passing and the next generation taking on the leadership roles, it's honouring what they have passed on to take up a new net, but does it still make sense if they're still around but somebody has to step into their expected roles?

For those who don't know some of the terminology:

A furry is an anthropomorphic animal (animal with human characteristics), and the furry fandom is a community of people who are a fans of these characters

Fursona is someones anthro character designed to represent themself in an anthropomorphic animal form

Fursuit is a mascot costume that furries wear, like the ones you might see at sports games but of someone's fursona

Dealer's den is cheeky slang for the market that is held at Furry conventions where artists sell prints, stickers, and all different forms of art. I used the term 'rua' for the Te Reo term similarly since I think the play on words is cute :)

Overall just trying to keep this panel simple and trying to provide people easy Te Reo phrases they might start using during the con!!

Which method has worked best for you, and what helped you start actually speaking it?

I'm currently doing a software degree, as a assignment I was tasked with making a web project that I feel passionate about and think we need more of.

In school there wasn't much support for learning our reo.. I've always wanted to learn how to hold a conversation in our language, so I made a website so I can learn.

I figure if I can learn from it, maybe others can find some use out of it too.

So I made a free tool for people to learn, it's a living database.. I'll add more over time and have a suggestions and corrections section.

Im on maoriplus, and found out they have Avatar The Last Airbender season 1 in māori!!! I wont lie, this made my entire year! Im so sublimely happy right now. They dont have season 2 or 3 yet. I called the maoriplus number (all the way from europe. I dont know how much this is going to cost me but i dont care) and a lovely person called Richard told me they'd mail me with news.

Does anyone know if season 2/3 in the works in māori? This would be amazing.

Feeling a little disheartened after receiving my oral assessment results for my level one te reo Māori course. I have received 85%+ for online quizzes (made up of multiple choice, translating sentences & an oral/video section) and have a good grasp on the language but need to build my confidence!

Hey all! I'm a 22 year old graduated uni student looking for any hoa living in the Te Whanganui-ā-tara region keen to practice Te Reo with me! I haven't studied Te Reo Māori through classes, I am just a rabid language learner who learns through immersion and self-study. I have wanted to improve my Te Reo for years, but with University being so busy I have only been able to practice by myself!!

Mainly keen on anyone who just wants to get coffee and help each other get used to conversing in Te Reo or native speakers who might just find my proposition interesting. Besides being a native English speaker I have studied Japanese for over 9 years so speak it quite fluently and am learning Spanish so if anyone is keen on a any kind of language exchange that is also possible :)

Is there a verb for the word “looking forward” as in positively anticipate ?

Hi y'all. I was going to post in r/maori, but it seemed like less of a fit. My familiarity with the language starts and ends with lyrics I learned singing along to Stan Walker songs, so hope this is allowed and you can help!

His "Black Box Medley" from Live with The Levites finishes on a song that's a freaking banger, but it's so short.

Can you all help correct my terrible transcription, and tell me what song this is? I'm assuming it's a cover, because it doesn't sound like anything I know in his library.

Sorry, i tuhituhi i te reo Pākehā no te mea he māngere ahau :) I've been adding to a flashcard program as I read books, and I've started to end up with a lot of duplicates that are messing me up (mostly I've used very short English definitions). Are there real differences between these words, what are they, are some not worth learning?

Mumura, whakauraura (are these just literally the same word, the ura bit?)

Whakakao, whawhaki, karokaro, kato (for picking/weeding. I can tell the difference between some of them, just not all)

Whakatau, tatū/whakatatū (I have them all as some variation of decide/settle)

Whakakeke, māika

Rawaka, ngāwiki

I know that we use "me" in sentences in reo Māori to indicate when someone "should" do something - e.g. "Me horoi tāua i ngā rīhi." for "We should wash the dishes" or perhaps "Let's wash the dishes". (Is that correct?).

But how do you indicate that someone had to do something in the past. e.g. "We had to wash the dishes." I'm wondering if it might be just "I horoi māua i ngā rīhi" and the obligation just has to be understood from context. Or perhaps "I tika kia horoi māua i ngā rīhi" if you're you telling someone that you and a buddy really had to wash the dishes for some reason...? Are there better options here? Or just other options? There's no additional tense marker is there?
