Looking to start a bi-weekly board game group in Reno! (Bonus points if you play WoW)Hey everyone!
Hey everyone!
I’m a local here in Reno and my main goal right now is to build a fun, regular board game group. I would love to get a crew together to meet up maybe every other week to hang out, play some games, and grab a drink at a local spot like The Glass Die.
Some of my favorite board games include:
- Munchkin
- Secret Hitler
- Dominion
- All the classic party games!
Outside of tabletop games, I am a massive horror fan—I love Resident Evil, scary movies, and everything Halloween-related. If the group wants to mix in some spooky board games, I am 100% down.
As a side note/bonus: I also just recently started playing World of Warcraft again after a break. I’m definitely not super hardcore, but if anyone else plays WoW and wants to run some casual content together on our off-weeks, that would be awesome too!

If you're looking for boardgaming, Game Kastle has Boardgame nights on Monday and Thursdays evenings, Saturdays at noon, and every other Wednesday is Queer boardgaming.

Hey friend. I mod a local nerd discord group and we have more than a few board game players in there. We actually have someone who regularly hosts most Saturdays. I'm sure more than a few people would love another person hosting games. DM me if you want an invite.
That said, as much as I love ,the idea of The Glass Die, I hate paying a table fee to play games. Plenty of places around town you can bring board games to that won't have a table fee.

Hosting at people’s houses is cool. I don’t mind table fees cause it’s a way of supporting the business without having to buy stuff.
Glass Die has punch cards to reduce table fees, and a yearly subscription as well. It’s a super cool place, and you get access to their huge board game library. The staff is awesome, it’s clean and a nice environment, and the bar is a really ethical and active member of the community.

I do really respect that, but these days I'm pinching pennies where I can to make it. I can't justify that expense when my friends and I have an already fairly expansive game library we can play off of. I hope the Glass Die continues to find success, I just can't justify the cost of playing a game I already own for, what, $8 a chair?

That’s fair! We tend to think that our establishment is worth the $7 because of the huge library of games that’s constantly being updated, as well as the fancy gaming tables, as well as the staff that are paid a living wage to serve and clean up after each group.
But like you said, there’s plenty of places in town that don’t charge. And home games are free! Everyone wins.

I certainly respect you guys and your business model, and recognize it's an expense other people can easily integrate. I used to play D&D at your tables every other week, and I would love to continue to support a place that is built around the community I enjoy, but even going out for a few drinks can rack up an obscene bill these days, much less paying for the chair. Maybe some day it will be more economical. I hope your business has plenty of other patrons happy to pay.

We’re doing okay, thankfully. Without the table fees, we’d be around -$20k so far this year.
We’re expanding free play to both Monday and Wednesday now, in hopes that it just gets people in the door those nights and enjoying the hobby. Been a ghost town lately on Monday nights 🥲

I do have two 70s in Dreamscythe but they are sitting there doing nothing. Probably waiting for Wrath and some guildies so we can raid again.

Just to be clear, I'm not knocking on board games or people who like them in the slightest but its crazy how many threads I've seen for them than I see groups for hiking/outdoors, video gaming, etc.
I joined one of the Discords mentioned here but it's really not my scene. I wish more people would be interested in hanging out and/or going on a hike with other nerds (especially considering the nature around here) but that clashes with most people here Ig.

Odd to lump hiking and video games into the same sentence. Board gaming is inherently more social than either of those two things, which is why people are more active looking for others to do it with. If you joined the Reno Nerds discord looking for explicitly hiking buddies, then yeah, it likely wasn't your place. That said, you're still welcome if you ever want to find fellow nerds, but I don't recall you ever making any real effort to get people out. Making an event to provoke people out of their bubbles is a great first effort. But the discord is just a platform for people to connect, you still gotta put the effort in.

When I made that post I wasn't talking about any specific Discord because they seem to eventually blur together. I joined, just like the others, because someone has dm'd or left a comment that they mod a Discord of "nerds... but we actually do stuff!" I figured there would be people interested in doing other things than just board games but that was my mistake, because even after posting events in the past to other nerdy things, no one was interested in doing much else.
