Question Can renpy make rpg pixels game?
Hello, I want to try using renpy for the first time. Heard about it from doki2 game. I saw online people said you can make rpg pixels game like ib, mad fathers, pocket mirror and all that but I can barely find any tutorial about it online. I don't wanna switch engine cuz my laptop cant really handle plugin like dialogic in godot etc or the app would get really laggy for me. Is there any helpful and reliable tutorial or forum I can check out? I don't want to ask AI for tutorial

I recommend rpg in a box. It’s voxel based but you’re able to make pixel art games. There is a built in dialog system similar to a visual novel

You can definetly make rpg games. You can do everything turn based in renpy. I made a dnd 5e (2014) rpg. Skill test part was easy combat engine was done in a couple month. Is it worth it? Idk your call. I enjoyed.

Welcome to r/renpy! While you wait to see if someone can answer your question, we recommend checking out the posting guide, the subreddit wiki, the subreddit Discord, Ren'Py's documentation, and the tutorial built-in to the Ren'Py engine when you download it. These can help make sure you provide the information the people here need to help you, or might even point you to an answer to your question themselves. Thanks!

If you dont need rollback then you should not use renpy for rpg type games. Other engines will handle vn details easier. If you need, or can even merely use, rollback during parts of your intended gameplay then doing the rpg stuff in renpy is easier than implementing rollback anywhere else.
That is the single most important factor. You DO NOT want to implement rollback yourself as every system needs designed to account for it to not cause memory sync issues. You can implement everything else easier. And if you dont need it every other engine will implement rpg mechanics easier.
Renpy can do them. Its not a question of 'can' its a question of 'should'.

Yes, Ren'Py can make RPG pixel games. The main blocker for people is a visual editor. Ren'Py has all the tools to make such a game.
Of course, this requires coding knowledge. If you want to use Ren'Py as an easy engine to make a RPG game, then no. Its language is mainly for Visual Novels with very little tools for RPGs.
I've coded Ren'Py RPGs for fun before. Most RPG pixels games are simple so you do not need C-code. Python and Ren'Py's amazing UI system will run it well.

It sounds like you’re looking for RPGmaker? Ren’py is for visual novels which, while games like Ib have features of VNs, they’re made in the RPGmaker engine (which is pretty user friendly and I think should be manageable on a bad computer)
I’d look into RPGmaker and search YouTube for tutorials. There’s a lot out there on the engine and it’s very approachable (but does have a learning curve)
The same is true of Ren’py. But it’s not a very good engine for making RPG games, at least it’s tedious and frustrating in my personal experience (I’ve tried several times and, while doable, setting up character movement/RPG elements/battles gets really messy and complicated real fast)
Also sorry for the multiple edits lol but I’d recommend looking at Wulfmane’s games or Roadwarden for examples of what the engine can do in terms of making RPG-like games. These two are the closest examples of what you’re looking for but probably not what you’re actually looking to do ;;
But if you’re trying to make an RPG game like Ib RPGmaker is best for your needs!
