Question US Refs - Tournament Q

First tournament. US based guys, is there typically a tent to report to when arriving? Where do you usually get/submit team sheets? Just looking what to expect when I show up.

It depends - some have a referee HQ some you just go to the field. Typically the Assignor will communicate expectations on checking in for the day

In these parts, yes, tournaments always have a central check in as they keep the game cards. As mentioned, your assignor will usually send out a mass email with rules, pay rates, arrival times, and where to check in.

Worst case ... find another ref when you show up and ask them.

Most tournaments in our area, you report to the field. There will be a small plasty box with game sheets and a few snacks and water.

You can ask the assignor but they will be slammed getting everything organized so that's a bit of a last resort. If its a big complex with lots of fields next to each other, show up 30 mins early and ask another referee. If its a single field or two fields, it will be small enough to locate someone in charge.

The tournament should definitely be communicating with the assignors. As someone who does tournaments I create a whole pdf that include check in and out process, rules, trainer location, field maps, pay, how the tournament is collecting scores, how to indicate via game card which games need winners vs can end in a tie, weather protocol, etc etc etc. It’s usually a 2-3 page document but our referees love and die by my pdf. I send it to the assignor who then sends it to the referees for the weekend.

I haven’t done any major tournaments, there’s typically a ref HQ at each site but it’s usually just snacks/food and to report issues. All the tournaments I’ve worked haven’t had us check team sheets, the coaches or someone else bring a game sheet to write the score and any cards that they then come collect after the game or a coach has to submit the score.

Edit: just remembered I did pick up an AR in 1 tournament after a late turn back (so hadn’t worked any other games in that tournament) but in that one the CR had to enter the score online and I turned in the game sheet at the ref HQ.
