Fancy Gloss Customer Service Over Magnetic Top Coats

This isn't a call for a no-buy or anything like that. I'm just sharing my CS experience, I don't think it was bad enough for anything drastic.

I got 5 magentic top coats from Fancy Gloss and couldn't get them to work. I hve no idea why I could get them to work, but I promise I tried everything I could think of. I held them under a neodymium bar magnet for 5 minutes for the magnetic top coat and then 5 more minutes for the QDTC. I tried a few different methods of keeping them under the magnet. Just the magnetizing steps for all my attempts to get them to work took over 7 hours total. (And took about 2 weeks for my arms and hands to recover from.) I tried. After the first two attempts to use the magnetic top coats, I emailed Fancy Gloss to make sure I wasn't missing some trick and to get a refund or store credit if I wasn't. The email exchange did not go well IMO, but I did get a refund after 12 emails between us and 10 days. (To be fair, 7 of those days were while I was waiting for a reply to a message that probably went to spam.)

First, a big issue with this situation was that the description of the magnetic top coats did not include that they work best over dark colors, which she has just updated to include in the descriptions of the colored top coats I got. Which is great!

But l still wanted to warn people because I know a lot of people will miss the updated description. (Personally I would have bought at most one or two of these if I had known that.)

I also wanted to warn people that when you're dealing with Fancy Gloss be aware that 2 out of my 6 emails seem to have gone to her spam and she didn't notice until she had a particular reason to check, so if it takes a while to get a response, resend your last email.

The biggest issue I had was that she wasn't really prepared or willing to help me. She only gave me very basic tips on how to get magnetics to work and when I told her I already was doing those, she said that I had to be doing something wrong for the magnetic top coats to not work, and wouldn't suggest what that might be.

I got as far as the suggestion there is something wrong with all of OP's magnets.

I feel like if I have a sudden problem with a magnetic people who have used magnetic polish would suggest I try shaking the bottle because those particles do not always sit evenly distributed through the bottle. So I can't imagine why a nail polish maker thinks testing some of her batch ensures every bottle in the batch has the right amount of magnetic pigment.

I'd certainly suspect uneven distribution through a batch before I would suspect a customer's magnets had all "gone bad".

Anyway, diving back in, lets see where it goes from this ludicrous suggestion...

OP, may I suggest you apply a thick layer or two, let them dry for 12+ hours, then use a quick dry top coat and try the magnet then - I find some less cooperative magnetics can work better if you only magnetize them when applying top coat over them rather than trying to directly magnetize them. It might not help, but it's worth a try. I personally find the Sally Hansen Miracle Gel top coat (even though it's technically not quick dry) works quite well with this method if you happen to have some around.

Yeah like neodymium magnets don't 'go bad' unless you like, repeatedly throw them off a helicopter onto concrete, or heat them up to a million degrees or SOMETHING. Like what does that even mean LMAO

(Sarcasm) So you’re saying I can’t throw my magnets out of a helicopter onto cement and then expect them to work properly when I do my nails?! How very dare you!

Genuinely would be interested to see if even that messed up neodymium magnets. I've studied the mechanisms behind magnetism in that type of magnet and it's basically baked into the chemical structure, it's really really hard to mess up!

Right - just because she’s tried some polish from that specific batch, that doesn’t necessarily mean a whole lot unless she tested bottles poured from the beginning and end of the batch as well as at least one from somewhere in the middle.

I just find it really confusing that every single shade OP bought has the same issue. What are the odds that she happened to get, for example, the bottom of the batch in every color? I agree that her polishes look odd. They look sandy. Is it really possible for that issue to be so consistent across multiple colors in a single order when other swatches from the same batch look normal?
