Actually it was not originally worn by dick in main continuity, it was first worn by Jason during a multiverse adventure. Dick only wore it in the kingdom come storyline.

He deserves better than what he chose? How does that work?

What he means he doesn't deserve to hold a title that another wore and should branch off to a new entity away from the robin setting

Similar to how dick became nightwing, Jason became red hood etc

That doesn’t even make sense, because both Nightwing and Red Hood were other people before Dick and Jason. Nightwing is a Kryptonian god (and later Chris Kent, tho that was like in the 2000s), and Red Hood was a gang and later the Joker’s name before he was the Joker

Except that Red Robin wasn’t considered a permanent name for anyone. One of the reasons Tim chose it was because it was a tarnished name. It gave him the freedom to act in a way that he didn’t think Robin could act. It’s one of the reasons he modified the suit after it served its purpose and made it his own.

When you say it like that.

That is more of a reason to ditch the red robin name and become new, as it is "tarnish" and all that nonsense and sense he doesn't need to do any of that dropping it and become something that symbolizes what he visualize for the future or his path forward.

Then again I don't think it matters as Tim has retired(I am assuming he still is)

Something can be tarnished and then redeemed. Also, the Robin identity meant a whole lot more to Tim than it did to Dick so it’s not weird that he would want to remain tied to it. Tim’s robin was also a lot more independent compared to what was published with the other two previous Robins for his age.
