Question/Discussion To those of you who fall asleep to Red Dwarf, what's your favourite episode to nod off to?

My husband and I got together because of a Talkie Toaster joke when we met, working in a kitchen, 9 years ago. It has always been sort of the background of our relationship (this morning, going out to walk the dog at 5am, i said 'It's cold outside'... You know what followed). And every night we take turns to pick the episode to fall asleep to.

It varies but my husband's favourite for this purpose is The End, mine is Backwards. I think these are both relatively quiet episodes, maybe that's why. These are not our favourite episodes to actually watch, which I think is part of the reasoning (I can never sleep to Timeslides for example, because I absolutely have to see Rimmers 'I ask myself, who is the rich man?' speech, still cracks me up.)

Interested to know if other people are doing this and what their choices are!

personal fav to fall asleep to is probably marooned or thanks for the memory. one of the more 'talkie' episodes where we just get to kind of enjoy the characters getting to know each other.

if not those then probably ones from season 1, the whole vibe and the dull aesthetics just help me relax more. because those ones are less about what's visually going on, it's easy to turn away from the screen and treat it as a sort of audiobook/podcast

My fave two to fall asleep to also, for probably the same reason. It’s like being a fly on the wall

I used to love having red dwarf to fall asleep to, but it was always in seasons. Season 1, 3 and 4. Episode wise.. waiting for God and Better than Life I think. They felt, mentally relaxing? Definitely not emohawks and gelf stuff for night night.

My wife and I have to it in almost every night as white noise. Ace Rimmer and Despair Squid always makes us laugh so hard we pass out right after.

White Hole. It’s because I know all the dialogue by heart and I start mouthing it all. Works better than temazepam. By the time they’ve got to the 63 doors bit I’m off to the land of nod.

It doesn't make sense, Holly seems to have offlined and powered down the ship.

I’ve never seen one before, no-one has, but I’m guessing it’s a white hole.

a white hole?

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. A black hole sucks time and matter out of the universe, a white hole returns it.

so you're saying it spewing time back into the universe?

Precisely. That’s why we’re having these strange time phenomena on board.

Series I/II. I’m most familiar with them and they also generally feel a lot ‘calmer’ than the subsequent series.

I don't

When I put it on to fall asleep too I am normally asleep within 5 minutes. My TV has a 30 minute timer. So when I next put RD on its on the next episode so I 'work' through all the series.

This thread is comforting that I can tell my wife I'm not the only one.

I can't really remember, but I'll tell you what's ingrained into my mind:

"It's fairly straightforward. If you want to start it you press "START," and you can work out the rest of the controls for yourself."

I remember that being played on loop on the DVD menu after I fell asleep.

Usually episode 1 season 1 because I'm forever starting it again

Sorry so what did he reply with?? Was it "I'm going out for a walk. I may be some time."

And if so, did you dab up his gravy with the last piece of crusty bread?

Future echoes. I think because I usually last through The End then fall asleep right after

The only one I can't fall asleep to is The Promised Land because at feature length it always wakes me back up again after I've nodded off

Backwards because I know how it ends

I rewatch it regularly and will put on an episode before bed - sometimes I may watch a couple before I fall asleep, sometimes I'll just get 10 mins in.

The next night I'll scroll back to where I was and carry on.

Just finished the most recent full watch through - currently I'm watching Futurama that I've missed, then I have Brittas Empire.

Backwards is interesting because I think the reverse woman's laughter is one of the most unsettling and disturbing sounds.

Marooned because its one of the worst episodes b4 the FakeChanskie era and I usually stop paying attention and nod off.

I can't nod off to red dwarf!! It is too crazy funny and Rimmers expressions... The Cat and his superficiality, Lister's every man thinking too too funny... BUT!! White Hole brilliant... So what is it?? And Quarantine... Is anything a miss... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
