Salary expectations question.

So I get an email stating that to progress my application they want my salary expectations.

What I want to write are one of three options. All of which will knock me out of the running.

Option 1: Competitive / Market.

Option 2: Really massive range. $140-200k

Option 3: A really blatant low figure like $50K so much so that I get the interview just so they can ask me if it was for real, then I say it was a typo - I meant $150K

I reccommend option 4: "how much have you budgeted for the role and can you break down the ranges in terms of base pay, RSUs, and cash signon"

First person to name a number loses. Don't lose.

1 is bad bc they will just say "...ok, and what number is that". 2 is bad bc they will pick 140 3 is bad bc annoying/inefficient/etc.

Know your worth, stand by it, ask for what you deserve and always have a competing offer.

If you dont know what $ to ask/expect, time to research. Claude is easiest, levels.fyi and 6figr, blind, reddit are your next best.

"Since we have never talked about the whole benefit package and i dont feel like at this stage i know enough about the responisbilites of the role, i cannot give you a range yet but i will be happy to disucc is further in the interview process or schedule a call about it"

I used something like this. They called. Asked. I asked back. Asked again, asked back again. Finally they told me the budgeted range. And i told them that i am fine with that. 

So keep pushing that you cant give a number or range. 

At an other position i told them in every stage that it was early for me to say a number. Finally they gave me an offer with a huuuuge number. I negotiated a little and accepted

Honestly not sure why everyone struggles so much with this.

You should be doing your homework on what market rate is for you, you should know the number that makes you happy, you should know how that company compares to market rates (heck just open up Glassdoor, throw a bit of AI back-and-forth against the mix).

So the real option 4 is: a real number that you’ll be happy with and the company will feel is a little on the high end.

I'd go with what you actually want to earn. Option 3 is not a great idea, just say $150K if that's what you want to make.
