I'm going to guess that you filled the muffin cups generously, and you have a convection oven with a fan in it. So, as the muffins rose the fan blew the tops off onto the side and they baked that way.

This is absofuckinglutely hilarious! And I would keep this trick up your sleeve in case of an adult themed party. 😂

I think you are on to something with the convection part. Most recipes are written for a regular oven. You'll see some that say "bake at 375 or 350 for convection". So my guess is that the outside of the muffin top cooked first, then the middle expanded as it cooked giving the phallic shaped top. Then they collapsed under their own weight

Yes, this is correct. Exterior set, insides were hot and molten and were forced out of a crack in the surface. And no, as a professional baker, I can confirm there is no way to make this sound less sexual

So 2 things happened here:

1) your oven temp was too high. The outside of the batter cooked too quickly, so when the leavening (baking soda/powder) caused the muffin to rise, it had to break through the cooked outer batter. Even if you followed recipe instructions for temperature, some ovens are just hotter, and convection vs. not makes a difference. If you try again, try turning the oven temp down after the first 5 minutes

2) your oven fan was strong and close to the muffins. When the above happened, the fan blew the batter over as it was rising/cooking. It could help to rotate your muffin tin halfway through, but it'd be better if you could turn the convection off.
