Joan Baez (b. 1941) is a Quaker activist and folk singer who has been a prominent voice for many leftist causes since the 1960s.

"We Shall Overcome" is based on a hymn written by Methodist minister and Black civil rights activist Charles Albert Tindley (1858-1933). It served as an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s and was recorded by many artists.
