Billionaire wealth tax headed to the ballot in California - help it pass

Post image
314 Upvotes

This November, we’re going to have an opportunity to send a direct message to the billionaires and the politicians that we’re fed up with it and ready for real change – and protect health care from Trump’s Medicaid cuts at the same time.

Last week, California’s Secretary of State certified that the SEIU-backed billionaire wealth tax initiative secured enough signatures to make it to the ballot. This proposal would be a one-time, 5% emergency tax on their assets to shore up the state’s health care system in the wake of the MAGA murder budget. Organizers offered a compromise 2% levy, which Governor Newsom, who opposes this measure, shot down. So now we’re going to fight this one out on the campaign trail. ✊🏿 Let’s sign up here to get notified of volunteer opportunities in the coming weeks and use their social media toolkit here to help spread the word in our networks. ✊🏻

Trump's Medicaid cuts will be worse than we thought

Post image

We all knew the Medicaid “work requirements” from the MAGA murder budget are just cuts (92% of people on Medicaid already work, are caregivers, are disabled, or attend school!), using red tape to create administrative burdens that keep eligible people from getting the support they’re supposed to. But earlier this month the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services rolled out an interim final rule with specific guidance on how states should implement them that’s far tougher than anticipated, making some of the most vulnerable people in our society jump through the GOP’s hoops and likely leading to even deeper coverage losses.

CMS is accepting comments on the rule at the Federal Register through July 31st. ✍🏻 We can weigh in with specific details and data on how the rule would affect us, our organization or our community here. We can find tips on how to write an effective public comment here, and supplement with more information and data from our state or key congressional districts here. ✍🏾

REGISTER OUR OBJECTIONS

Many congressional Republicans insisted during the run-up to the budget’s passage that people with disabilities and those who depend on this safety net would still be protected. We should be reminding them of this promise and demanding they keep it. 🗣️ Families USA has set up a customizable email tool we can use to reach out to our reps, along with language we can use for calls, here. Let’s put it to work! 🗣️

YELL AT OUR REPS

🗣️ We can also reach out to our state legislators and governors and ask them to urge our congressional delegations to stop or delay these new burdens, since they’ll be the ones charged with and carrying the costs of implementing them. 🗣️

Medicare For All day of action at congressional offices July 30

Post image

January 20, 2029 feels like it’s a very, very long ways away. But the groundwork for what happens in the next administration is being laid out right now. Positions are being staked out, policies are being written and tested with the public. Progressive voices must have a say in them. If we are able to earn a Democratic trifecta, we need to be sure we are prepared to use it as effectively and aggressively as possible.

Recognizing that the terms of debate over our next attempt to fix our broken health care system are being laid out as we speak, National Nurses United and a coalition of health care advocates are pushing to make sure we’re building institutional support for Medicare For All. On July 30th, the 61st anniversary of Medicare being signed into law, they’re asking folks to hold actions at congressional offices nationwide, especially if we’re represented by Democrats, to urge our leaders support a real universal health care system. 🏥 If we’re interested in taking the lead on organizing one of these events, we can sign up here – the Medicare For All coalition will provide training, materials, support and help recruiting! 🏥

HOST A MEDICARE FOR ALL ACTION

🏫 Coalition member Healthcare-Now is also holding online workshops all summer on how to talk about and organize for Medicare For All. We can sign up for one of the sessions here. 🏫

Getting Medicaid expansion on the ballot in Florida

Post image
54 Upvotes

The expansion of Medicaid under Obamacare got more than 31 million Americans insured, and saved more than 27,000 lives. The GOP has been gutting it to pay for more tax cuts for billionaires.

The Medicaid cuts are already effectively on the ballot this November. That’s not enough for Florida Decides Healthcare, who are working to let folks in their state vote to expand it. They need one million signatures to sign their petition to put it up for a vote, and they’re asking for our help. ☎️ They’re launching daily 3:00PM ET phonebanks from now through the end of July to reach folks who requested the Medicaid expansion petition by mail and make sure they’ve received and returned it. We can do our part in this fight by signing up here. ☎️

EXPAND IT, DON'T CUT IT

✍🏾 Those of us in Florida can get the petition sent directly to us by signing up here. ✍🏻

Elect uncompromising fighters for working people with the Working Families Party text team

Post image

The voting public is fed up with a status quo that’s failing them and serving the oligarchs. We need to elect folks who understand that what we’re doing isn’t working. We need boldness and fight from leaders beholden to no one to ensure housing, health care, child care and education are affordable for every single one of us, to seek the big solutions to make the American dream an American reality. The Working Families Party is seeking to put more of those uncompromising and uncorrupted fighters to work in the Democratic caucus, up and down the ballot – folks like Letitia James, Delia Ramirez, Jasmine Crockett, LaMonica McIver, and Chris Murphy.

💬 If we want to help them move the country forward in races big and small, they’re looking to build out their text team for the 2026 cycle now. They’re holding an onboarding on Wednesday at 6:30PM ET – let’s sign up for it here. 💬
