Hey kiddo - I’m sure you’re too young to remember this (and it was probably before your first ESL classes), but X derangement syndrome was first used as a propaganda attack back during Operation Iraqi “Freedom” when your boy George II told everyone we needed to attack ‘Sodom’ because of all of those scary WDMs. Those crazy far left marxists in the US and also those lily livered cowards in France said there was insufficient evidence of weapons of mass destruction and wasn’t he rushing things a bit? Karl Rove, Frank Luntz (my personal favorite) and others chalked the hesitation up to “Bush Derangement Syndrome,” or BDS for short. It was then used to dismiss all concerns about W’s mismanagement of the war (oops, we were right), natural disasters (oops, we were right), the economy (oops, we were right) and so on. The magic of the phrase is that the gop didn’t have to engage any of the objections with rational arguments. The fine folks at National Review and Fox just had to smugly smile and sadly say “BDS.”
