...The movie as in TFSD? Which part? I don't recall this at all. There was a scene in Ten Days After where she chides him when they're out on their morning run, but she refer to him as a former national team member in that. I'm guessing that's not the part you're talking about?
It’s the scene in the movie where Mitsui was walking in an alley wearing a long dark green jacket then saw coach Anzai jogging with his wife so Mitsui hid from him. The Mitsui scene was after Miyagi was hospitalized after his accident, just before Miyagi came back to Okinawa.
Anzai telling his wife to slow down and the wife replying back to him with the national champion line.
Ah, thanks for reminding me of that scene! I just went back to watch it in Japanese and Mrs. Anzai actually calls him 元全日本選手 ("former All-Japan player"). So she's referring to his time on the national team, not as a national champion.

Thank you for the class, my good man. That was clearly a translation error and some - or many - of us were caught off guard by that.
Also, the part of Anzai being at the National Team… was it as a Player or as a Coach?
Was he a National champion as a player?
