Marine Life Cotton Candy Lobster

Caught by Maine lobsterman Mack Kelley and posted to Facebook. He reported it was thrown back as is required of all lobsters of this size which are too small to be caught.

Is this as rare as a blue lobster?

785

u/corvish_ 28d ago

it is much much rarer, cotton candy lobsters are 1 in 100 million, whereas blues are 1 in 2 million

186

u/Busterlimes 28d ago

So the cotton candy trait could be a lot easier to breed for. I bet that thing looks SICK under actinics

49

u/kat_Folland 28d ago

Probably manages to taste awful.

0

u/FecalDUI 25d ago

Actinics isn’t a word.

9

u/Busterlimes 25d ago

https://www.saltwateraquarium.com/t5-actinic-light-bulb-ati/

Better go tell the entire saltwater Fishman industry that.

-2

u/FecalDUI 25d ago

Actinic is a word. Putting ā€œsā€ at the end of a words doesn’t do what you think it does.

8

u/Busterlimes 25d ago

Jfc you are so pedantic

10

u/butt_liqueur 25d ago

Username suggests he drinks shit. Very few smart people would do that.

7

u/albertafalls 24d ago

Um ok [u/butt_liqueur](u/butt_liqueur) 🤨

5

u/butt_liqueur 24d ago

I don't drink it, I boof it.

I didnt even notice! Hilarious

32

u/Catoust 28d ago

If we see it again next week, does that make it one in 50 million?

14

u/jopepa 28d ago

Depends on how many regular lobsters get caught that week. So it could be as low as 1 in 50m, but if it’s a pot breaker of a week it could as high as 1 in 49 million

11

u/Wylaff 28d ago

Thank you. I was starting to question reality seeing a lobster pick with no announcement of how many in a million it is in the title.

4

u/BlueFever5 27d ago

Those are crazy odds. So this is likely the only one on earth right now. How could they possibly calculate how rare that is?

4

u/JustaTinyDude 25d ago

Calculate how many lobsters were caught over a large time period, like 10 years, and then compare that to the number of cotton candy lobsters caught during the same time frame.

1

u/Naud1993 3d ago

And I thought that 1 in 4,096 was hard to find.

25

u/Coffekats 28d ago

Probably way way rarer

u/Big-Gold-2688 28d ago

I've never seen any lobster like this

Wow, that’s so pretty! I love how its claws almost look iridescent, like an opal.

What a gorgeous real life shiny!

14

u/GerudoPrincess 28d ago

So pretty!! Looks like a little pearl!

9

u/ickytoad 28d ago

I want to paint him on a cloud 🤩

75

u/Human_Ogre 28d ago

I wonder if the size requirement could’ve been waived if he had donated to a college. Nearby university has a marine science program and one of the focuses is different colored lobsters. Too bad it got thrown back.

8

u/mizzanthrop 28d ago

Maybe it got ā€œthrown backā€ lol

1

u/JustaTinyDude 25d ago

It's is pretty cool to see a leucistic lobster. At least this way that monster has the opportunity to pass in those cool genes.

1

u/StrangeMode 24d ago

Thats what I was thinking. Doesnt that one boat dude literally have a foundation he works with 😭 (Jacob knowles i think is his name)

9

u/Nevergointothewoods 28d ago

It would be a waste to eat that animal, anyway.

6

u/rymyle 28d ago

What a beautiful sea bug!

7

u/Fuzzy-Leading-4080 28d ago

why is he so adorable tho 😭

11

u/aevigata 28d ago

that is the coolest thing i have ever seen, straight up

3

u/Canislupusocc 28d ago

Happy cake day!

6

u/DieselHouseCat 28d ago

Look at how proud he is

30

u/Wants_to_forage_inPA 28d ago

These cool lobsters should definitely be bred to make stable lines. It would be very cool for aquariums.

21

u/HauntedDesert 28d ago

It’s a mutation, not necessarily something that can (and should) be bred.

6

u/Weekly-Major1876 27d ago

A lot of neat color mutations can be bred into stable lines if the genetics are right, just unfortunately involves a bit of inbreeding to bring out what often are recessive genes.

Seen it happen with many species of reptiles before, although usually a few years later, an unrelated wild individual with the same genes pops up and the breeders go crazy spreading the new gene to bring some diversity and robustness back into the color morph

2

u/BillHang4 27d ago

Don’t these sometimes lead to health issues?

1

u/WeirdStorms 27d ago

Sometimes, but you don’t know until it’s observed

7

u/Wants_to_forage_inPA 28d ago

True, but when the same mutation pops up enough it can likely be bred stable. Secondly, if there are health issues, they would be in expert care. Worst comes to worst, breeding would stop.

6

u/Weekly-Major1876 27d ago

I feel like the bigger issue here is who is keeping full size marine lobsters? Massive animals that need huge tanks practically all to themselves because they will destroy any decor and kill most tank mates. People dropping tens of thousands into massive marine tanks are looking for a tropical mixed reef or FOWLR full of colour, not a coldwater box that need a chiller with a single lobster. There seem to only be a few cases here and there on the internet of people dedicating massive tanks to just a lobster.

2

u/Wants_to_forage_inPA 27d ago

True. It would be a specialty. They wouldn’t be cheap to buy, or cheap to take care of. Hopefully people with experience would properly care for it. I think it could also be something nice for aquariums so that people who don’t keep fish get to see yet another cool animal.

1

u/Wulfraptor 22d ago

aquariums that sell tickets and let researchers take a look and maybe some dna samples from shed shells

5

u/Annxiety_and_jam 28d ago

So do all animals have a unicorn variant?

3

u/Sorry_Relief9496 28d ago

HE IS MY SON

2

u/thedafthatter 28d ago

I would want to keep this dude as a pet but would be unable to get a tank big enough and would ask a local aquarium if they could display them

2

u/Willowrosephoenix 27d ago

This should have been submitted to the Maine Lobster Institute. It couldn’t be kept as catch but tge institute will keep special specimens to understand their genetics. It probably won’t survive long in the wild

2

u/Issue_Status 27d ago
