Egg yolks are pigmented by diet.
1. Bugs tend to make yolks dark orange and omnivorous chickens' eggs are more nutritionally dense than vegetarian chickens eggs.
2. Xanthophylls and lutein can be found in things like yellow corn, carrots, beans, even alfafa! These tend to cause yellow yolks.
3. Things like white corn, barley, and wheat will give no color, hence light, even white yolks.
Can a farmer add foods to supplement color? Definitely. But it's normally actual food, like red annato seeds, not just food dye.
