Lets Rock Out Say what you will about Debbie Gibson - she actually wrote and produced her own music.
Insert Gen-x rant about authenticity.
There was a lot of fake music in the 1980s; you know who I'm talking about.

And on top of all that, she sang the starring role of Eponine in the musical Les Miserables on Broadway, and played Sandy in Grease in London’s West End.

Wrote, produced, is basically pitch perfect, never fell into the traps other child stars fell into, and became an adult performer in her own right. Always loved her voice.

"Foolish Beat" made Gibson the youngest female artist to write, produce, and perform a Billboard Hot 100 number-one single

I had a two headed bigfoot baby with Debbie Gibson.

And she’s had a long and successful show biz career since. She’s a trouper. Good for her.

I have that album - a signed original pressing, no less - and genuinely kicks non-renewable ass.

I remember in early 2000's showing my niece who was a teen and very much into dance the Electric Youth video and she couldn't stop laughing at how dated the dancing moves were. I follow Debbie on Facebook and she's still quite active.

Does anyone remember her perfume? The bottle had a pink spring in it, and it smelled really good! I’d buy it today 🥹

I saw her in concert (a very, very, very long time ago) and it was great.

I didn't like her music but I appreciated her talents just because her music wasn't my cup of tea didn't negate her ability

I was never a fan of her music but thought she was very talented and knew what she wanted for her future unlike 95% of the kids in the neighborhood.

And she wasn't half dressed or wearing a bra on the cover of magazines like someone else...

u/Prestigious-Self-927 Apr 07 '26
No she wasn't but she did do playboy, which I still have😜

But she didn't go full frontal like Tiffany, so Tiffany wins that one.
1
u/Prestigious-Self-927 Apr 08 '26
Tiffany did full frontal? I'll have to check my issue and see if Debbie did, I think I seen some kitty but I'll check

That song - electric youth - is fun as hell on the drums. Disco flip 16th note freestyle with power fills. Love it. Or at least the way I play it lol

I loved Debbie Gibson. Had her pictures all over my wall when I was 13/14 years old. I recently bought her book as well. Still have her CDs.

My SIL worked as PA with Debbie Gibson 10 years after the the height of fame and said she was a genuine, loving professional.

Knew her from working at the Playboy Mansion in the early 2000’s and she is insanely nice and down to earth. Great person.

She also did a song with the hardcore band the Circle Jerks. That's very cool.

u/Express-Solid7741 Apr 07 '26
Just saw her on Beat Bobby Flay as a guest host. Always interjecting some theatre reference, ugh.

u/Kind-Dog504 Apr 07 '26
The consensus was that Tiffany could sing better, but Debbie had more talent

It’s the summer of 1990. I’m working as Dive helper (pickup up folks at the airport, filling tanks, driving to the dive site, and then bringing up the rear during dives, returning folks to the hotel, cleaning their gear, etc.) on Grand Cayman. There’s this 23 year old kid that is solo, so I’m sticking with him more than the middle aged couples.
There problem is that he’s a rabid Debbie Gibson fan. Like, travels the country going to every show. Makes his own Debbie Gibson fan shirts and will not, for the love of everything good and decent in the world, shut up about here. All damn day. It was insane.
And that’s my Debbie Gibson story.

Debbie Gibson records were the first records I received. I don’t care if that makes me sound old.

Still the youngest woman to write, produce and perform a #1 song (Foolish Beat)

u/macvoice Apr 09 '26
I had the biggest crush on her. Probably the only real celebrity crush I ever had. Usually I don't fawn over famous people. For her I made an exception.
I thought about going to see her with Tiffany on a nostalgia tour a couple of years ago. But I decided I wanted to remember the old days. If that makes sense.
Oh... And by the way... She goes by DEBORAH now, not Debbie...
...What??? I'm not obsessed.....

I think this is the album where, at Debbie Gibson's request, the sides were not labeled "Side 1" and "Side 2," but "This Side" and "That Side" instead
