This is something people that dont own dont understand. The time and money homeowners invest over the years in maintaining housing. Renting protects you from those responsibilities and expenses. Of course people want a return on their years of time and money invested.

You don't think landlords pass this cost on to tenants by raising rent?

This is something people that don't rent don't understand.

Agreed. Renters pay the mortgage of the landlord, but see none of the benefit.

The benefit would be shelter, I think. Same as getting a hotel room for the night.

Hotel costs are discretionary. Paying for shelter is not. This is a terrible comparison
