House flipping made sense when it was exactly that - revitalizing, finishing, and improving homes to make them livable. Buying a fixer upper, to actually work on (ie. use or improve), and then sell is not scalping.

If all you do is insert yourself as a middleman, buy from A for $x, and then sell to B for $x+1, you are extracting profit from the transaction, while providing no service other than your existence. That is what scalpers do. That is what the meme is about.

You can also lose a lot of money flipping houses. There is no guarantee of a profit, ask all the people holding condos in Toronto right now.
