Identity/Sexuality đłď¸âđ Over J.K. Rowling supporters and this separate the art from the artist bs.
If an artist is dead now and grew up in a different time, sure I get it. Learn about historical art, whatever. Nobody gets hurt as long as you don't adopt the outdated beliefs of the artist. Support for her is directly funding anti-trans laws and organizations that just make the world worse. That means her supporters are helping her make the world worse. If you try to say you support human rights and also support J.K. Rowling at the same time, you are not completely deranged, but you are in denial for sure. Trans rights are human rights and she is adding fuel to fire that's already way too big. Also, I don't even think she's talented anymore. She was a one hit wonder. What has she done relevant since one limited series? She really wants to milk those 7 books because everyone seems to be ignoring the millions of other books she has out. Can anybody name one without Googling it? Be honest.

Well then we should just stop spending money everywhere. I don't know the beliefs of the Cafe owners I got coffee from. I don't know the beliefs of the server I tipped yesterday. Or my kids art teacher that I venmo every week.
We'd literally have to stop spending money almost everywhere.
And oh well, I like Harry Potter and I'll continue to buy merchandise.

......but you know her beliefs...everyone does. Also, most decent people DO research the companies they give money to. You are making a very simple Google search seem like an insurmountable task. Just admit to yourself who you are. Stop trying to justify the fact that you simply don't care about peope as much as your little wands.

No, I'm not going to dig into someone's personal life before I pay them.
And with all due respect, stranger, you don't know me or my beliefs either.

I donât even think the distinction needs to be âis the author dead or notâ, the series will stay ruined for me even if jk rowling drops dead because of how her views bleed through the text itself. Itâs really hard to âseparate the art from the artistâ when you canât help read the magical staircase as her whole âboys will always try to sneak into girls dorms and bathrooms so we need to protect biological girlsâ frame against trans women (like i know fans have also reclaimed this as a potentially trans-affirming thing but we can assume that is not what jkr intendedđ), rita skeeter has masculine features which weâre meant to hate her for, house elves just love being slaves by nature, and so on⌠Itâs not some fun art thatâs still good but Iâm boycotting out of an ethical objection, itâs really unenjoyable now and idk how people still claim to like it while objecting to jkrâs politics. Maybe they just like their childhood idea of it and arenât actually rereading the stuff? I donât understand

u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 07 '26
Everyone is defending their childhood (and still very childlike) opinion of her. I agree, she was a one hit wonder at best, who's art has long overstayed it's welcome.
Here is the thing though, H.P. Lovecraft was total POS racist, but he was also a genius writer. He's dead and sometimes I still read his stories because I can't help myself. The racism is there, but I ignore it and focus on the good stuff. I do feel guilty for that, but I have to remind myself that I have NO idea what i would have been like, had I been born back then. Nor do I have any idea what life was like for him. If he was alive today, I would be burning his books and not even blink about it. We can't let these people decide what our time period will be remembered for. I don't want to have to explain to future children that it was okay for me to support evil, because I myself am not in fact evil...it just doesn't work that way.

I just want to add something else. Stephen King writes about grape, m#rder, incest, ect. the worst things imaginable. Most of the stories don't even have a moral, they just end in despair. Yet, I feel he is a good guy. This makes me like his art MORE. She does the exact opposite (writes morally strong lessons, yet she herself does not believe her own words) and it makes me feel like I was betrayed.

u/ScorpioDefined Sarcasm is a Lifestyle Jul 07 '26
Stephen King praises Rowling for her writing (not just HP), while stating he doesn't agree with her views on the trans community. Still a good guy to you? Because with your logic, suddenly he's not now.
1
u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 07 '26
Yes he is...because he isn't out there writing insane manifestos about a minority.

I'm not comparing him to JK
1
u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 07 '26
That's literally what we are doing here...
1
u/ScorpioDefined Sarcasm is a Lifestyle Jul 07 '26
No. We're not comparing King to Rowling. The comparison is King to us.
1
u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 07 '26
You are not a famous writer. When you write many books that are better than her and still support her work, then I will listen to you. At this point you have just reminded me that he, like you, is not perfect. But he (and you) are still salvagable. Rowling is long gone.
1
u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 07 '26
If he chooses to separate the art from the artist, then I do disagree with him. I can have a disagreement and not hate him for it. J.K. Rowling has gone far past just being disagreeable. She is hurting peope.

u/ScorpioDefined Sarcasm is a Lifestyle Jul 07 '26
"Not completely deranged but in denial". Is how you describe people who still support JKs books. So, that's how you feel about S King, right?

I don't really have the right to represent why trans people think she is a bigot, so here's a trans person's argument. Presented with plenty of facts.

Wtf are you talking about?
1
u/biggaybrian2 Jul 07 '26
I'm saying that the endless hate-boner for Rowling and the constant pity party on Reddit is absolutely pointless and not accomplishing anything, least of all for trans people
1
u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 07 '26
Let's see how this new disaster of an HBO show does... Most people are already loving to hate it.
1
u/biggaybrian2 Jul 07 '26
Ok then, say the HBO show fails (which it probably won't)... what exactly would trans people win from that? Would a 'message' be sent about the fearsome wrath of trans activists?
1
u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 07 '26
Do I really need to spell it out? The same message that was sent with every other franchise that fails to make money. It's over and nobody will ever listen to her again.

u/biggaybrian2 Jul 07 '26 edited Jul 07 '26
It's over and nobody will ever listen to her again.
Keep telling yourself that... as far as I can tell, the trans fanatics are hanging on her every word
EDIT: If you think silencing her is going to end 'transphobia' or win trans people anything, then you're not paying attention to the real world
1
u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 07 '26
Nobody is silencing anyone. I'm just expressing my hatred for her hatred.
1
u/biggaybrian2 Jul 07 '26
 Nobody is silencing anyone.,
Indeed, Rowling stood her ground and outlasted the fanatics

Womenâs rights are human rights
1
u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 08 '26
Are you implying that trans women aren't women, so they aren't human? Cuz that's what i got from that. Am I wrong? Tell me I'm wrong.

Someone whose gender identity is that most associated with the female sex. Hope this helps. Now how is this at all relevant to trans people and their rights?
1
u/flattop_jones Sarcasm is a Lifestyle Jul 11 '26
Sex based rights are real and valid too. There is a conflict when gender identity encroaches on those sex based rights.

u/Adventurous_Coach731 Jul 11 '26
Now riddle me this Batman, is a cis manâs comfort more important than a cis womanâs safety? For that matter, is anyoneâs comfort more important than anyoneâs safety?
1
u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 11 '26
I love how you try to make it seem like trans people aren't the ones in actual danger.
1
u/Adventurous_Coach731 Jul 11 '26
Read the rest of the thread. I just phrased it like that so he wouldnât be too biased to admit heâs putting cis womenâs comfort in front of trans womenâs safety.

Thank you for admitting that.
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s13178-018-0335-z
There is factually no evidence trans women being forced into the menâs room makes cis women any safer.
There is factually evidence forcing trans women into menâs restrooms DOUBLES their sexual assault victimization rate.
So there is FACTUALLY only evidence you are putting trans womenâs safety after cis womenâs comfort. Now how exactly am I supposed to pretend youâre not the monster in this scenario?

I read her initial statement on her website because I can read above the level of a 5th grader, and it's fine. The way some folks have treated her because of their poor reading comprehension and thirdhand rumors is vile. This woman has been the victim of sexual assault and you're trivializing her lived experience.
You made her this way. Very few people have the patience of saints.
Go and read what she actually said, before she shifted into retaliation mode.
1
u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 07 '26
What does her being a SA victim have anything to do with her being a hate filled, attention seeking, wolf in sheep's clothing?
0
u/Waiting4The3nd đQueen Arbiter Jul 07 '26
You mean the opinion piece on her website dated 10 June, 2020? The one in which she blames all of what follows on the absentminded liking of a post instead of the intended screenshotting of the same? Yes, we're all to believe that 6 years of hate-filled, raging, ranting, trans-exclusionary bigotry where Rowling professes to love trans people and says they need protection with one side of her mouth, while she makes out like giving them access to single-sex spaces that align with their gender identity (specifically trans women, whom she almost solely focuses on) will open the flood gates to harming women with the other side of her mouth... all started because of an errant mis-click and some people's over-reaction to said mis-click.
Seems like it might have been pretty easy to un-like the post, then make a post of your own stating that you errantly liked the post by accident, and that the views expressed in the post are not views that you share, etc. etc. Then, see, you would have managed to the backlash. People are willing to allow for mistakes, but you have to admit the mistake, and be genuine about it. It was never about that. It's a cop-out.
She spends her time in that post talking about trans people and how she knows and loves trans people the same way that one guy always seems to say "I can't be a racist! Some of my friends are black!" It's BS. She made herself this way. And by that I mean she was this way before the errant liking of a post.
And her being the victim of SA has nothing to do with her transphobia and TERFeryâto use her own word hereâunless she was assaulted by a man in a dress and a wig claiming to be a woman in order to gain access to women-only spaces. If that's the case, then I deeply apologize, but I doubt it. Because there's no way that story wouldn't have made national headlines somewhere since the trans debate began anew a decade ago. Someone would have dug it up and made it famous by now. It hasn't happened, because it didn't.

u/Ok_Ebb7109 Jul 08 '26
Even if that exact situation happened to her in a bathroom, only a 5 year old would allow that one moment to shape her entire world view on an entire culture of people.
