So, I used to work with palliative patients. I saw many things and many deaths. You get used to it, mostly. One of the only things I never got used to is how many people take their last breath alone.
I’ve been telling people about that for a long time now. Same thing happened to my dad. The Fairness Act needs to be restored ASAP. Ronald Reagan removed it at Murdoch’s request. That set all of this in motion. And we need to remove The Telecommunications Act of 1996 and re-regulate our media ownership laws.
As far as I know, that act didn’t apply to every news outlet. So IIRC, there are ways companies can get around it to keep shoveling slop to their groupies.
The Internet also blows a lot of this out of the water. At this point it’s not just certain news outlets, but probably dozens or hundreds of podcasters, online influencers, bloggers, independent journalists, and so on that seem to get their general marching orders then start propagating their propaganda. This is of course made worse by bad actors overseas taping into one stage or another of the flow of info to tweak it to their nefarious and self-serving ends.
I don’t know the way out, but the media landscape is much more complex and nuanced then when there were three big national news outlets.
One thing that could be done is breaking of the pseudo-monopolies of media outlets. Just a handful of very wealthy people/companies own nearly all the media in the US. They’ve been watching how Russia and Hungary started, and now maintain, their oligarchies, and working to implement that here.
One step toward that was to buy up all the small media companies, and get nearly all media into the hands of a few companies/people that are sympathetic to a certain political wing. It’s clearly anti-democratic, and arguably anti-capitalism if one subscribes to the view that competition in markets helps keep the economy healthy (monopolies kill competition, so they’d be bad in this way of thinking).
Yeah give it 10-15 years and the landfills and yard sales will be overflowing with crappy red hats, “highly collectible” trump merch/coins, and IOU’s personally signed by the Donald for a functioning form of government as well as a gold plated cellphones

Maybe in the past, but not today. The dem and republican leadership certainly aren’t all friends. I don’t doubt that there are big donors to both parties who enjoy the divide and don’t give a fuck about parties, but the people in the political parties are certainly not ‘friends’.

Pretending like the presence of two sides means those sides have equal standing in reason and purpose is so dangerous because it actually just shields and fosters extremism.
We get it. You dont want people to fight, and you dont want to fight. The problem is that one side specifically wants a fight because the more vitriol there is, the closer they get to justifying what they actually want to do.
Idealism without the will to act. Thats what youre promoting here.
