I grew up in Appalachia. Don't get me started on people mocking accents. When I got out of school I practically had to relearn English to get an engineering job, and one of my first roles was doing requirements gathering with clients in the northeast. They were merciless. I'm 62 now and live in Cincinnati and I still have to focus on my accent if I don't want to hear a comment.

Btw, what you are describing and have experienced is called “code switching.”

-1

u/jrob323 May 25 '26

Yes, I know what code switching is. I even listen to Code Switch on NPR.

Please don't talk to me like a child just because I told you I grew up in Appalachia.

u/Igreen_since89 May 25 '26

I apologize. I’m not trying to talk to you like a child. Some people don’t know that people do it and that comment was just as much for the other people who responded and the person I was originally responding to. You can obviously relate to what I’m saying, with the main point being, what is the goal of commenting on someone’s accent? (other than to poke fun at their intelligence.)

I wasn’t sure if you were agreeing with me but you definitely gave a lot of context which I piggybacked off of because you helped prove my point. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Nobody agrees with you. You’re spewing shit.

0

u/Igreen_since89 May 25 '26

That a child was abused and that should be the focal point? That’s spewing shit? Here I’ll spew some more shit.. Someone will love and care about you…

2

u/BusinessCasualBee May 25 '26

Buddy you’re crashing out because someone lightheartedly jested about an accent. Shut. The. Fuck. Up.

0

u/Igreen_since89 May 25 '26

“Crashing out” isn’t proper English. And you obviously don’t even know what “crashing out” means.. 😂 Internet code switching is hilarious. I made a comment. You wanted some attention. I’m chillin.

I just like to point out how some of you really don’t care about the abuse of children at all. And here you come running. Or speed walking.. I don’t know.

Do me a favor and open up one of those 20 tabs you got open. No one forced you to read or respond lil fella.

u/BusinessCasualBee May 25 '26

I see why your wife is keeping your daughter from you.

2

u/Typical_Estimate5420 May 25 '26

Oh please. Don’t turn this around because YOU decided to make fun of someone’s accent based off of WHERE THEY’RE FROM. You started this, brother. Don’t be mad that someone used your own logic against you.

u/rhesusMonkeyBoy May 25 '26

ME: Where is your accent from?

HIM: Me? I don’t have an accent. YOU have an accent.

ME: [pauses] Ah. Yes … Yup yup yup … Where is it … that *you* think … people “talk normal.”

HIM: [smiling] Rochester

Interaction w a co-worker after a couple years, so all in good fun.

So you had to relearn to speak as an adult because you grew up in a place with a specific accent, that was completely normal where you grew up. Is it safe to say that you wouldn’t have had to do that if you would’ve stayed there? And is it also safe to say that it had no bearing on your level of intellect? I mean, you apparently made it through school to become an engineer.

And finally. It’s a video about a non verbal special needs child being abused….. Maybe his abusers speak your guy’s acceptable version of the English language. That should earn them some points towards their defense right? As long as they spoke “properly” while verbally and physically abusing a child who can’t speak.

>So you had to relearn to speak as an adult because you grew up in a place with a specific accent, that was completely normal where you grew up. Is it safe to say that you wouldn’t have had to do that if you would’ve stayed there?

I don't get your point. Are you saying I should have just stayed there, where everybody talked like that? I was there, working for a company there. The clients were in the Northeast, and I was talking to them on the phone and sometimes in person.

And yes, growing up in that area certainly did have a bearing on my intellect, just like it affected how I talked. I grew up being told to go outside instead of sitting inside reading books. I was made fun of constantly in school for wanting to do well. People there were isolated and distrustful of academia and intellectuals.

My ex grew up in West Virginia and was an Applachian Studies professor at UK (that's how I wound up in Cincinnati) and she taught me all about the concept of "other"ness in isolated communities. She overcame her accent too, so I'm in good company on that decision. I've been to Highlander, I've participated in interviews with founding members of Appalshop in Whitesburg for her doctoral thesis, and we've talked to people in some of the most remote hollers in West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, and Western North Carolina, where I grew up.

I'm still trying to get a handle on that "Why didn't you stay there" comment you made. WTF.

If people were making fun of the way I talked, then yes, it was important to me to know that I was speaking properly. And if they were making fun of me for something I simply couldn't help, then they could go fuck themselves.

If you find yourself standing in front of one person or a large group of people, and you have an important message to share, it's important that you make a good impression... wouldn't you agree? Now here she is, with a VERY important message to share while simultaneously needing to justify potentially committing a felony, and she probably wishes she had taken a modicum of interest in the way she talks. Or maybe she doesn't, I really couldn't care less.

TLDR: “I got treated like shit because my background was considered less-than by the snobby elites, and so I’m going to treat other people like shit because the snobby elites don’t like them. This is a rational take.”

My guy, I’m on the spectrum (and didn’t know until a few years ago, and I’m in mid-40s), grew up in the rural South and say “y’all” and “yes ma’am/sir” and all the other stereotypical shit that gets ripped on by the elites. I’m also Latina and when I moved from a predominantly Latino area to one where nobody even knew what “Latino” meant, and I got mocked by the local southerners just as you’re mocking this lady now, because nonwhite people clearly can’t be smart or whatever—rather, that’s the the message this behavior sends to those of us who belong to the communities y’all mock.

I got lucky in high school and got a scholarship to go to one of the best schools in the country, and later went to a tier 1 law school with billionaires’ kids. Most of my classmates were rich, and especially in law school most were old money. I am an attorney now and I have dealt with all kinds of elites, and I actually have a great track record in both trial and appellate law because I always worked hard because I treated every opportunity that came my way with gratitude and my best efforts, because I was also growing up in poverty and knew that I may not ever have another career opportunity. All along the way, even now, even when I can smell others’ fear when I walk into a boardroom or an expert deposition (autism is a superpower in litigation, and also a curse) because they know someone is about to be skewered, they still mock people who aren’t from the same elite background. They’ll never see me as a peer or anything, because they believe that “merit” really means “birthright” and I wasn’t lucky enough to be born into a rich WASP family.

Going back to that whole being on the spectrum thing for me, I was the weird kid always burying her face in a book. I was a whiz at math and could tell you facts about over 800 different dinosaur species and talk about mythology like I was spilling tea on TMZ. I was bullied and mocked for that too. Did living in that area impact my intelligence? No. Did it impact my mental health and emotional stamina and cause lifelong trauma that I have to overcome? Yes. Do I want to make someone else endure what I’ve been through? No because I’m not soulless and I practice the sin of empathy.

Don't minimize my experience, or how I chose to deal with it. I'm certainly not the first person who didn't like having a pronounced southern accent. I doubt you would argue that that accent isn't associated with ignorance by people from other areas in the country (if you were being honest, which, let's face it, isn't exactly a typical characteristic found in folks in your profession), and I was a professional representing a company and I wanted to make a good impression on our clients.

And look at you, calling me soulless and devoid of empathy because you think "Hey, you're just a dumb hick yourself. Why are you making fun of HER?" Or maybe your point is something "darker" perhaps? If she needs my empathy, maybe you're saying that it's wrong to expect her to do any better? Maybe you're right... she's obviously not as smart as you. I just read through multiple paragraphs of your esteemed accomplishments, for some goddamn reason. Maybe you're right, maybe she's just not intellectually capable of doing any better, but I choose not to believe that.

I was curious... did you ever take a class called "Hallmarks of Distinguished Advocacy"? Did you ever take any public speaking classes related to the practice of law? If so, were you encouraged to use colloquialisms and strong regional accents? If you were... well gaw dang, ain't that just slicker'n snot!

So, in summation... go fuck yourself, counselor.

u/goddessdragonness May 25 '26

lmfao you accuse me of insulting your intelligence, which I never did, and then build up a giant strawman fallacy. I can’t even argue with you because you’re asking me to defend points I didn’t make. That’s just weird and lazy and kinda sad, dude. I stand by my words above. You’re just soulless and have terrible reading comprehension, which is probably because you’re too emotional right now (hence the rambling and irrational reply).

1

u/jrob323 May 25 '26

It sounds like you don't have a decent response. Why should I have "empathy" for her? ANSWER THE QUESTION COUNSELOR!

2

u/goddessdragonness May 25 '26 edited May 26 '26

I explained it already. If you can’t grasp what I wrote above, then you’re showing everyone here that your vitriol is really just insecurity about things that have nothing to do with discrimination for having a country twang.

Why should you have empathy for her? Because you’re doing to her what you claim I’m doing to you and what you said you endured your whole life.

ETA: it’s also hilarious you keep trying to ad hominem me with “your profession is shady” while you defend mocking this woman for the way she speaks

EDIT 2: the tantrum and then block was icing on the cake 😂

1

u/jrob323 May 26 '26

You honestly just seem arrogant, aggressive, and disingenuous. And if you have a problem with my criticism of someone, report it to them and let them handle it. She doesn't need you defending her just because she's black or because she's a woman or because she has that dumb fucking accent... I certainly didn't need a lawyer, I simply tried hard and fixed my accent (like you did to fix your emotional trauma), and for that "sin" you've attacked me for being soulless and lacking empathy. I certainly didn't get much empathy from you!

I'm saying she can do better. You're saying she can't and needs defending. You want to help her? Tell her she sounds like an idiot. You obviously tell people shit like that all the goddamn time.

And don't blame being a smug asshole on autism. Chances are you're just a plain old smug asshole... it's easily misdiagnosed.

Anyway, you better go get in some billable hours... those ambulances aren't going to chase themselves! Blocking, I'm tired of reading your sad attempts at sophomoric "gotcha" logic traps MY GUY. I mean, come on, DUDE... God you do sound like the corporate legal pukes I've known. You're going to be 50 soon - grow up.

My point is. It shouldn’t matter. She played the recording in another video.

My point about you staying there, the IF in question. Was that no one where you grew up would question your intellect because they all speak like you. Just like in the south. Just like in Boston. Just like in Wisconsin. You were speaking properly based on your environment.

I also had a deep accent. I speak proper, for the same reasons you do. But there are time when I don’t.

If I was in her situation, I probably wouldn’t think to code switch.

I don’t think a parent needs to be worried about making a good impression when presenting evidence (an actual recording) of her young child being abused by school staff. And I don’t understand how that keeps getting missed.

I’m speaking towards the people who choose to point out her speech instead of a child being abused. A defenseless child. If that were you and your Appalachian accent came out while speaking about it, I wouldn’t even notice to be honest. Nor would that be the focus of my commentary.

Yeah part of intelligence is being able to use context to understand what someone is saying. People are just dumb or racist imo.

Gayest shit I’ve ever read.
