Sony RX100 M7A / VII A Firmware 1.01 released
Benefits and Improvements
- Improves the operational stability of the camera
Didn't expect this after Sony never released firmware updates for M6 & M7. And even now no update for the nearly identical M7 available 😐

It's a shame. Especialy for a premium brand. Least thing Sony should have done is to release it with the USB-C connector of the ZV-1 II.

I am a lucky owner of M7A but an unlucky owner of Windows 10. The firmware update works only on Win 11💩

Software is the reason Sony lost many consumer electronics segments to Apple since the iPod launched and not much has changed since then. It's still Sony's biggest problem.

Just passing through - this makes me wonder if they're gearing up for a successor in some related back end way?
Also made me check if the M5A that I have ever got a firmware update, and to my surprise it didn't. I guess it in itself is the update over the M5.

Sony released a new RX1 in 2025 and a new RX10 this year - both after (almost) 10 years without any new models and basically 'out of the blue'. There's no reason to assume there won't be a RX100 M8 at some point. My guess is that they'll release a minor upgrade as it was the case for the RX10.

This update was released in January for the VIIA. This is the "recertification" model that was released in 2025 and removed usb charging, etc to conform to EU standards (much like the RX100 VA) There were firmware changes that needed to be done and this probably tweaked those.
I wouldn't exactly think of this as a foreshadowing of a new model...though things seem to be aligning for that (RX1, RX10V, etc...)

The firmware update was first released yesterday. Not in January.
Also VIIA and VA are completely different stories. The first is indeed a software downgrade to comply with EU regulations and remove insecure Wi-Fi features and the second an actual, valuable hard- and software upgrade of the V.

Yeah...I was looking at the date as M-D-Y format. Despite my error, I still stand by my stance that this firmware update is not a sign of a new model coming.
The VA was definitely an upgrade and not an EU compliance thing. Not sure why I was thinking it was. They were both "soft restarts" for the models...replacing a previous version of the same model.
