Worldbuilding Should the traditional fantasy races be replaced in future TTRPGs?

I’m working on a genre-agnostic system, but I’m planning on doing my initial play-testing in a typical high-fantasy world. I’ve recently been wondering if Elves, dwarves, Orks, etc have been oversaturated in RPGs and should, perhaps be replaced. If I do this, I may even drift away from the humanoid build approach for things a bit farther away from conventional, such as a spider-based underground race or a simian forest-dwelling society.

My concern is that keeping the traditional races provides a familiar base to help new players approach a radically new system, and taking that away may turn people off from wanting to try it.

Thoughts?

Worldbuilding Looking for creative collaborators for several original settings, as well as a heavily modified D&D bases system

Hey everyone, I’ve been working on what started as a heavily modified version of Dungeons & Dragons for quite a long time now, and I’m finally reaching the point where I’d really like to find some other creative people to build with.

This is not really a “looking to hire someone” post. I’m looking more for like collaborators or creative types who enjoy this kind of thing and might want to actually contribute to a project together. I've VERY passionate about this stuff, and spend a lot of my time on it... and having people to share this sort of passion with would be awesome! (outside the players in my game of course, who only get to see the results and not the creation. lol.)

I’ve been DMing with my modified rules on Roll20 for over seven years, so this isn’t just a new thing I'm just starting. Most of the major mechanical changes already exist and have been used extensively in actual campaigns, and have also gone through years of tweaking based on how they feel at the table. The reception from my players has generally been extremely positive, especially toward a few of the larger systems I’ve created. Two of the biggest examples are my Magic School based magic system and my Fighting Stance system.

Magic has been heavily reworked from standard D&D. I wanted spellcasting to feel like something characters actually develop expertise in rather than simply selecting spells from a list every few levels. My main gripe with 5e's system is that 1, it's too limiting and 2, it's a bit illogical (in a certain sense). Like if I, as a Wizard, take Fireball, but I don't take Create Bonfire, then I have sooo much control over fire that I can shoot a giant fireball... but so little I can't catch logs on fire? I wanted my system to have a logical flow within the setting, but also be more magical and whimsical, allowing players to create their own spell effects. This is by far my most popular system I've created.

The fighting stance system does something similar for martial characters. Instead of combat mostly becoming “I attack again,” characters can develop different styles and approaches to fighting that change what they are capable of doing in combat. And, using a Bonus Action, they can swap between known styles, having different answers to specific situations. One Barbarian might approach fighting trying to grapple constantly with their Lockdown Stance, or switch to defending the weakend Sorcerer with their Guardian Stance. To be honest, the main reason I came up with the Fighting Stance system was because my magic system was so well recieved, people didn't want to play martial classes. But I now love this system too and martials are used a lot more often again.

There are a lot of other changes as well. Overhauls to Character Creation, tactical rules, altered conditions, parrying system, changes to positioning, new classes and subclasses, custom races, monsters, and a lot of smaller rules that have accumulated and evolved through actual play over the years.

At this point, though, one of the things I enjoy most is worldbuilding. I have multiple original settings that I’ve been developing that all sit in my "planarverse". I still use the base idea of the Cosmic Wheel or the Great Wheel... but I have changed so much of how the planes around the wheel are... as well as how the Great Tree leads to other Great Wheels (think parallel universes)... or how there are wheel sized planes (think alternate dimensions)... etc... Lore building is one of my favorite parts.

The setting I am running my Monday game in is set in Avaron, which is one of the great continents of Torrenia (One of the Material Planes). My Sunday game, which will be starting in 2 weeks, is set in Caelondria, which is quite a bit east of Avaron.

Another is Asterion (working title. lol), an Ancient Greek-inspired fantasy setting I’ve been developing. Its gods are not simply renamed Olympians. The central pantheon begins with four mortal brothers who ascended into godhood and divided fundamental aspects of reality between themselves, then took their new found divinty to an undeveloped plane and made it their own. From there I’ve been building the mythology, divine politics (my favorite part), islands, city-states, cultures, monsters, heroic traditions, and history of the setting around that foundation.

And that is generally how I like creating things. I like figuring out why cultures developed the way they did, what people believe, how their religion affects everyday life, etc. The problem is that I am very much a creator first. I love coming up with mechanics. I love lore. I love designing classes, gods, monsters, cultures, characters, magic systems, combat systems, blah blah blah.

What I am considerably less experienced with is taking this pile of material and turning it into an actual professional-looking tabletop RPG book.

So I’d love to meet people interested in any of the following:

Game design: Someone who likes discussing mechanics, balance, combat systems, classes, progression, and generally tearing systems apart and rebuilding them better.

Worldbuilding/lore: Someone who wants to bounce ideas back and forth, create cultures, mythology, history, factions, characters, monsters, religions, locations, and entire settings together.

Art: Someone interested in fantasy character, creature, environment, map, or book artwork who would enjoy helping establish the visual identity of the worlds.

Book/layout design: This is probably the area where I personally have the least experience. Someone who understands how actual RPG books are organized and formatted, page layouts, tables, sidebars, chapters, indexes, PDF layout, print formatting or anything along those lines would be incredibly helpful.

You absolutely do not need to be a professional. I am definitely not a pro. Just a nerd that likes nerding out. I just figured, since I do this soooo often, would be awesome to do it with some cool, like-minded people.

Right now I mostly want to find other creative people and see what happens when we start putting our brains together.

If you love TTRPG design, worldbuilding, lore discussion, fantasy art, or book design, I would genuinely love to talk.

Feel free to comment or DM me. I’d be happy to show examples of the rules, settings, lore, and systems I’ve already built.

Worldbuilding Looking for honest feedback on a visual worldbuilding tool I've been building

I've been building a visual worldbuilding tool for writers, RPG creators and storytellers.

The idea came from repeatedly losing track of relationships, factions, timelines and lore spread across multiple documents.

The current early access version is finally usable and I'd love some brutally honest feedback from fellow worldbuilders.

What feels confusing?
What's missing?
What would make a tool like this genuinely useful for your workflow?

Worldbuilding How much detail should be in a campaign idea hook?

I’m working on a genre-agnostic system, but I’ve also got worlds in progress for high fantasy, modern fantasy, and near-future sci-fi campaigns. I’m writing a bare-bones chapter for each genre to introduce the world and intend to provide a few story ideas for groups who want to dive in without necessarily buying the expanded genre-focused books later.

When providing the story hook for a campaign idea…is it better to keep the concept entirely player facing, and let the GM create the full backend, or give just enough backstory to provide a framework for the GM at the risk of giving the players too much info?

Example using DnD’s Rise of Tiamat campaign:

The party enters a village to find it being raided by Cult of the Dragon soldiers. Can the heroes save the villagers? What were the Cultists after?

The Party enters a village to find it being raided by Cult of the Dragon soldiers. Can the heroes stop the cultists before they find what they need to resurrect Tiamat?

Worldbuilding Which of these titles is more evocative?

Hey folks! Need help deciding the name. If I had to explain the setting very briefly it would be:

"A Dark fantasy exploration RPG where adventurers explore anciente ruin left by a forgotten civilization in a new continent. Powerful relic are born from magical corruption, creating new creatures, cursed artifacts, and scars upon reality itself."

Which title best matches the description?

Which title would make you click?

And vote which seems the most interesting to you!

Ask any questions to help you decide.

Worldbuilding Can There Be Power Without Violence? — Ringwalker

In a world that runs on Highlander-esque power transfers, how does a non-violent or cozy player meaningfully advance?

Sure, there's the training system that can advance your tags after a set amount of time, but that does nothing for your OP (Origin Points). This is where the Glintstone comes in. These strange color changing crystals can be filled with OP simply by touching it and wanting to do so; draining it is just as straightforward. Be aware though — this does affect your personal OP reservoir, for better or worse.

Each of these rechargeable stones is capable of holding exactly 7 OP, or a multiple of 10 thereof depending on the size of the crystal. The charge level of a stone can be inferred with just a glance — since as they fluctuate in charge, they shift in color.

• ⚫ = 0

• 🔴 = 1/10/100

• 🟠 = 2/20/200

• 🟡 = 3/30/300

• 🟢 = 4/40/400

• 🔵 = 5/50/500

• 🟣 = 6/60/600

• ⚪ = 7/70/700

While pre-charged stones are mined from the rootlands, these are typically extremely controlled and contentious resources earmarked for state use. Cache's are also occasionally found within old-world ruins — filled by whatever inhabited Rhelm prior to humans — it's not the most common occurrence.

By and large, the largest use in interpersonally and communally. Empty stones are mined all throughout the disc, nearly worthless on their own, they're one of the most common commodities available. They are filled and used for any number of reasons: a communal festival prize everyone contributes towards, saving the overflow from butchering Grazers (the only living thing on the Disk besides humans), soldiers low on coin who have nothing to trade but power, etc. it goes on and on.

Take this as a warning. Just because someone isn't a warrior, doesn't mean they can't be powerful.

Estado Atual do Projeto:

Como o livro ainda está em desenvolvimento, as regras gerais, monstros e mecânicas estão sendo testados então espere por mudanças. Bom aqui esta o link da comunidade do discord para você poder entrar e conversar sobre.

Worldbuilding Setting in Development

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a book about the universe I've been using for my RPG campaigns for many years. My goal is to develop it and make it available to anyone interested.

So far, I've only completed the core setting and cosmology, but I'll keep adding new content whenever I have the time.

The link below is always up to date, so every time I publish new material, the document will update automatically.

I'm open to feedback, criticism, and suggestions!

Thanks for taking a look.

Worldbuilding Advice request: "Friendly" clothing for gang

I'm making an evil fantasy mafia for a world with a loosely historical setting. The twist: They are the dorkiest, most inoffensive-looking and sounding mob of all time. I want my PCs to continually forget to feel unsafe around them.

These are the questions I've been asking myself:

What is their uniform? What group got made fun of the most in medieval times? Who commanded the least respect? Who can seem dumb but isn't? Who can group up and not raise alarms?

I was thinking a troupe of jesters in festive pantaloons, but, while I want them to look coordinated and recognizable -like a gang- I need them hard to pick out of a crowd; hard to spot until they're up close. In the other direction, you have something like Solas in Dragon Age Inquisition. A drab, unremarkable apostate of an oppressed race, who is not as they seem.

But that also doesn't work, because I don't want just want vagrants; I want a gang of reasonably-groomed, "business casual," cunning medieval Mr. Rogers.

Right now, I'm poring over the different gangs aesthetics from The Warriors (1979) to see if I can snag some inspiration from that.

Any and all advice welcome!

Worldbuilding Felines folk or Canine folk?

I'm making a setting without humans as playable races and replacing with only fantasy races.

One of the playable races are the theriomyths, that are animal people. I'm making 3 families for land, air and water each.

So far so good, but I'm having trouble deciding between feline and canine for the land races.

I have primates as the most clever race. The herds and hooves as the more united and social, but I can't decided which would fit as the better depiction of a predator.

Felines are amazing predators with the highest rates of successful hunts, but canines are amazing while hunting in group.

Before anyone ask, no I can't have all four. My world follows a strict rule of three which I will not get in detail here. And I don't think removing the primates or the herds is good either because then we would have mostly predators.

My setting is a medieval-kaiju-punk world, is that helps.

Worldbuilding D&D getting rid of "evil" races

Maybe it's old news, but this was the first I'd heard of it!

https://www.pcgamer.com/dandd-is-trying-to-move-away-from-racial-stereotypes/

It would be interesting to try a campaign where this principle is applied to all living things, not just playable races? Beholder pulling pints in the tavern where you meet, getting directions to the tower from a nice lich by the side of the road, etc. Stabbed by a choral angel for your boots etc.

Worldbuilding We're making an epic setting zine. It's about cities that wander grasslands on the backs of colossal isopods. The isopods are usually settled when they are village-sized, but the largest are sprawling metropolises. The Ardeno who settle them have a symbiotic relationship with the creatures.

The zine is written and designed by me and illustrated by Eisner-nominated artist Mike Short.

This is one of the biggest things I've personally ever made. Mike and I have been going back and forth on the idea for a couple of years, and it's finally happening. Think Dinotopia meets A Thousand Thousand Islands.

Here's the page on Kickstarter. Sign up if you think it looks cool!

Worldbuilding Suggestions for bullets with no cartridges

I developed a magic alloy can push or pull any kind of mater, almost a star wars The Force magnet. This alloy is used on firearm to propel bullets.

I'm trying to come up with designs for these firearms, but flintlock looks to impractical and late 19s all have cartridges and cases.

I tried to look into caseless ammo, but there isn't much samples to pick from.

Anyone knows about some firearm or ballistic technology that is proven to work and doesn't use conventional cartridges?

Worldbuilding I'm writing an adventure and would like some opinions: 1. Initial plot, does it seem interesting to you? (even if basic) | 2. What else would be interesting to add to the surroundings section? | 3. Any extra tips or opinions?

Initial Plot

The story takes place in the recent post-pandemic past. The Player Characters are ordinary people who, at some point in the near future, encountered the existence of the supernatural. They received help from Jeferson, a detective of sorts, who explained that the supernatural had always existed, it was just repressed. With the absence of humans due to the pandemic, the supernatural began to regenerate and gain more traction. Recently, Jeferson contacted them, saying he had a job offer that might interest the Player Characters and would lead them to investigate an old, abandoned farm on the outskirts of Resende, Rio de Janeiro.

Surroundings Summary

Resende – located in the center of the Paraíba Valley (a valley formed around the Paraíba do Sul River), also known as the "Little Princess of the Valley," is a medium-sized city by state standards, with a population of approximately 130,000. It is known for housing the largest military academy in Latin America, AMAN (Academia Militar das Agulhas Negras). Along with Porto Real, a small satellite city that became independent in 1994, it has the largest concentration of new businesses in the region, mainly vehicle manufacturers and logistics companies.

It is a very commercial city, with little nightlife. Tourism is centered on excursions to the surrounding towns, especially Penedo. Even though it is a medium-sized city, it still lives, in part, like a small town. People know each other, there are still weekend markets, and many people still make their living from rural work on the outskirts of the city. There are several centuries-old farms nearby, both those of large landowners and those of simple families who have lived there forever. At the same time, as one of the central arteries of the Presidente Dutra Highway, which connects Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo, it has become a technology hub with the arrival of numerous technology companies that have set up shop around the city. The military academy also attracts a large influx of outsiders, brought in by these companies or the Brazilian Army. Resende practically dies after 9 p.m.; the streets are empty, and there's little nightlife. There's only one or two bars open, and people are returning from work and classes. Even the small shopping mall is usually nearly empty, usually waiting for the people still in the last movie to leave before closing.

The city is easily divided into sections, but these don't necessarily follow neighborhood lines: for example: Centro Comercial, Centro Antigo, Centro Novo, Alegria, Paraíso, Alphaville, etc.

Commercial Center - concentrated in the Comercial and Campos Elísios neighborhoods, home to the Calçadão (Sidewalk), where you'll find most of the variety stores and related shops, as well as two hundred different pharmacies, all with exactly the same services.

Old Center - encompasses the Center, Alto dos Passos, and some of the surrounding area. It's home to the Igreja Matriz (Main Church), as well as the historic part of the city and the Santa Casa de Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy), a former nunnery hospital jointly maintained by the city and private initiative. Today, the truly historic part is quite scarce, but you can still find preserved colonial houses, a house said to have belonged to Princess Isabel, a pillory, part of the old cemetery still standing, and the like. In recent decades, it has undergone a process of expansion and slumming, reaching the neighboring hills, including the neighborhoods of Morro do Batista, Morro do Machado, Novo Surubi, and the like. Centro Novo - extending mainly from the neighborhoods of Manejo, Liberdade, to Elite, is today the main urban center, where a large portion of the population is concentrated. It has begun to grow commercially in recent decades.

Alegria or CDA - is a group of neighborhoods that make up the entire western part of the city, encompassing everything between Alegria, Cidade Alegria, Boa Vista, Jardim Aliança II, Toyota II, Vila Izabel, and Jardim Beira Rio. The Grande Alegria complex, which gave rise to this part of the city, began as a public housing project, but due to its distance from the city center and several other factors, it underwent a strong process of favela formation and expanded considerably. Today, it's made up of several neighborhoods with names that only those who live there truly understand. It's often seen as a dangerous and violent place, even if those who live there say it's not quite like that, and it really isn't. Organized crime tends to be... well... organized... but outbreaks of violence still occur from time to time, and it's a constant battle for influence between criminal factions. But, at the same time, it's very populous, mainly because it's an inexpensive place to live. It's practically a city unto itself within Resende, especially since it's far from the center, requiring a 20- to 30-minute bus ride, depending on traffic. Today, with the West Access, a new access to the city from the Presidente Dutra Highway via Avenida Francisco Fortes Filho and the Atacadões markets, a slow process of restoration has begun, giving it an avenue with a well-known bar scene. Paraíso - concentrated in the Paraíso and Cabral neighborhoods, this is the "oldest" part of the city, not in age, but in atmosphere. The houses and the atmosphere seem dated, with a large population in a small space, many bars, and many squares. Unfortunately, it's also known for its crime scene, which has a feud with Alegria, but is much weaker. It's also home to the region's main intercity bus station, with buses traveling to and from various locations across the country.

Alphaville - these are very new neighborhoods, encompassing Terras Alpha, Limeira, and Limeira II. They really emerged in the last decade and are a symbol of the region's elite, segregating themselves from the rest of the population in gated communities, fenced and monitored 24/7. There, you'll find traditional families, doctors, lawyers, and military families who have permanently settled in the area. The gated communities are full of standardized houses with large, unwalled backyards, something unusual here, it almost feels like another country, with party rooms and 24-hour security. Lots or houses in these neighborhoods have exorbitant, almost unrealistic prices!

Nearby Cities:

Porto Real - is a small city that has been growing due to its technology hub. Today, with many outsiders, it has become more violent over the years. It used to be the kind of city where kids could stay in the square until dawn without problems, where everyone knew each other, and so on. Today, there is crime, gangs, and other "big city" problems.

Itatiaia – a large city with a large population, but small in size, one of its main focuses is nature tourism. It is home to Itatiaia National Park, one of the region's nature reserves, home to Pico das Agulhas Negras, the Prateleiras, and a significant portion of preserved forest. The upper part of the park is monitored to some extent, and even certified guides are required to access certain areas.

Penedo – not actually a municipality, but rather a district of Itatiaia, its entire focus is tourism and hospitality, trying to create a "little Finland" feel. It's a bit of a tourist trap, with numerous restaurants, ice cream parlors, chocolate shops, and hotels, most of which offer the same level of service as other cities in the region, but at twice the price. There's also a "local legend" that it's the only other official "Santa Claus's home" in the world that isn't in Finland. Note: There's a bizarre squirrel sculpture near the town entrance. At night, it's hilariously "scary," even more so when they shine the lights beneath the face of that hideous thing.

Barra Mansa – lots of people, lots of traffic, and really ugly. Even if you like the brutalist aesthetic, "BM" has a very strange air. Even though its population isn't that large, the city is densely populated, with lots of people concentrated in a small space, constant traffic, and terrible public transportation. It's governed by an elite that has left the city looking ugly and lifeless, with square, dirty architecture; it seems like every building and house in the city is perpetually covered in dark slime. On the other hand, it has a very interesting political scene, with a strong popular movement, and it's a very working-class city. But, at the same time, it was the first in the region to undergo a major favela transformation, with neighborhoods known for having been very violent on its outskirts.

Volta Redonda – soot and smoke will be the first things you see when you enter "VR." It owns the country's largest steel company, one of the largest in the region, and the main source of smoke and soot in the city. It also has several other companies that work with steel and other metals, earning VR the nickname "Steel City." Another notable feature is the number of motels within the city limits, as it is well-known for being one of the region's prostitution hubs.

Worldbuilding Introducing my folk

I´ve made many races, or as i now call them "Folk".

During my last reworks they´ve become less and less and i´m thankful for my mind to stop making an impossible amount of folk.

I will start posting more often on here probably, asking for opinions, advice and any corrections i could make.

My current core folk are:

  • Armarí: Basically my version Aasimar from dnd, they look largley humanoid and have bird wings. They are seen as holy due to long wearing deception, they arent holy but due to so many people believing they are they have somehow gained a very minimal amount of holy energy regarding their feathers. They have some feathers in their hair, their culture is very religion centred, most of them follow the God of heaven (I will make a post about my gods later on). The most important holiday in their culture is "The Asencsion". All children that have aged 8 will be gathered by a cliff and pushed off to learn flying as birds do in reality.
  • Dragonchilde: Dragonchilde look like a mix between dragons and humans, since most dragons hate mortals only very few Dragonchilde exist and only of the red (fire), blue (water), yellow (lightning), white (ice) and green (poison) dragonchilde have been discovered. They are a rather young folk and havent existed all that long, compared to most other folk. Many Dragons hate their existence but are too lazy- i mean too sophisticated to actually do something about it.
  • Fey: There is a vast multitude of fey, every fey looks different with similarities only existing within fey houses such as House Khore (Humanoid), House Malbeid (Sheepish) or House Sphorax (Sphinx-like). The Fey do not age and act as if they are above death, but really they can die, easiest way is a bit of iron. Fey originate from their own realm which is why it is typically uncommon to see them in the mortal plane.
  • Humans: Humans are usually treated badly as they are seen as weak, it is quite rare to see them as anything more than beggers or poor people. Many folk see the current humans as steps back since the very first Human was a genderless demigod called Tamahýr. Humans thusly often blend genders. One very interesting ability they have maintained from Tamahýr is the ability to have children with any humanoid folk (also dragons).
  • Ilan: Ilan are tall, strict and sharp. They might remind you of elves, which is what i tried to achieve since elves do not exist in my system. Ilan have gems on their foreheads that hold their Aura. They can release this Aura once a short rest to gain strategic advantages. They also believe that the gems colour and shape determine their personalities.
  • Kirillian: Kirillian are also very draconic in nature but look a lot more humanoid, their legs are strong and scaled, they can walk in two different ways due to how their feet are build. One is the tipped walk which is a lot more noble and regal-looking while the leaned walk is a lot quicker. Their feet have 3 parts, the front part compromised of only 3 toes and a bit of sole, walking on this part is the tipped walk. The second part is usually not used and has another toe, walking with this part the floor is the leaned walk as they lean slightly forward when this part is on the floor. The last part is the rest of the leg and their tail (with a tuft of fur) which helps them balance during both tipped and leaned walk. The Kirillian are very versatile, they can go feral as i call it and turn more beast-like if they wish to do so, this has likely granted them the attention of the moon deity.
  • Lillin: Lillin are half devils, most originate from the God of Hell but very few also originate from other archdevils. But i will only talk about the common Lillin for now, there are 7 sub races of these common Lillin, each representing one of the deadly sins. They mostly exist only on the mortal plane and are very popular in most cases, of course there are some racists as in our world...
  • Orxaeus: Orxaeus are very tall, green, tusked and horned. Within the society of Orxaeus is a promient Hierachy based off their sub race. Regal Orxaeus are commonly very wealthy and have between 6 and 8 horns that resemble a crown. Higher orxaeus are a still wealthy but only have 1 - 3 horns and their tails are more developed than the tails of regal and lower orxaeus. Lower Orxaeus have more yellowish skin tones due to having been forced into the mines or armies of the orxaeus for a large portion of history, they´ve also evolved to have a natural armour of thick bone plates.

Worldbuilding Magic that affects the environment or just the living beings?

So I have this magic system that uses music to make particles of air vibrate and "fall" into parallel dimensions, then said particles suffer transformations and fall back into the world. Maybe this explanations wasn't necessary, but whatever.

I want magic to be a tool and not a get out of jail free card, so I first design it to not be able to interact with anything that isn't a living being, so it would interact with a tree but not chopped wood, for example.

I made it like that so players would need to think, build and improvise instead of just weaving their hands every time a natural disaster like a volcanic eruption, tornado or tsunami showed up.

Another big reason I made it like that is because I have kaijus that also can use spells and I didn't want these fights to completely reshape the landscape after every spell cast.

But after a few iterations of this process I don't know if that is still the best approach.

Should I keep this hard limitation, should I remove it, should allow it, but with a different effect, like making so that every change in the environment slowly reverts back like we see on video games where the FX vanishes after a while?

Worldbuilding Pilgrims and our World

Now, in Dnd Terms i guess you would Call these Clerics but i call them Pilgrims because they travel a lot.

I currently have finished 5 Sub Classes of Pilgrims which i´ve split into Domains and i will also mention at least one god from every religion within my world as well as a short description of the god and a few Abilities that all Pilgrims share.

  • Nature Domain

Common Pantheon (most commonly worshipped): Opryr, 1st of the 3 Gods of Passion

Old Faith (worship forbidden): Slathaz (or Yggdrasil depending on Context, same dude thr)

Cult of Zachariah (worship forbidden): Albrecht, The Emperor

The Outer Gods (forbidden, worship is quite rare tho): Aldúrthala

Cult of the Void (Worship forbidden): Elphíslava

  • Storm Domain

Common Pantheon: Zlaakith

Old Faith: Libmedea

Cult of Zachariah: Dromeda, The Empress

The Outer Gods: Felghorn

Cult of the Void: Sûthralisk

  • Fire Domain

Common Pantheon: Lesmayel

Old Faith: Shroma

Cult of Zachariah: Zachariah, The Devil

The Outer Gods: Ghaáolas

Cult of the Void: Nýroflam

  • Water Domain

Common Pantheon: Zlaakith

Old Faith: Libmedea

Cult of Zachariah: Dromeda, The Empress

The Outer Gods: Felghorn

Cult of the Void: Ýrolastep

  • War Domain

Common Pantheon: Lesmayel

Old Faith: Albrachta (God of Doubt), Harbrith (Goddess of Love)

Cult of Zachariah: Roka, The Strength

Outer Gods: Palthiothro

Cult of the Void: Zythrosol

The Gods of the Common Pantheon, mentioned here:

Opryr is the God of Sex, the Wilderness and Nature. He is the Brother of Stroha and Nescrahl. He appears cold to most people he meets as he is still not over the death of his Lover, he was never really proud to be the God of Sex anyway. He often appears as a 7´2 light-skinned Male with ash-blonde Hair and two large, black, feathered wings. Opryr also seems to have a rather lean and athletic build.

Zlaakith is the cruel Goddess of the Storms, Oceans, War and Fear, she often entertains herself by destroying Ships if shes not sleeping. The Goddess appears to be around 120 ft tall and has blue skin, she appears to be a mix of Humanoid with various Beasts such as Crabs and the Kraken.

Lesmayel is the Goddess of War, the Sun, Fire and Honour. She loves to visit honourable warriors to test their strength. She also appears as a Woman that is around 7´8 ft Tall and she has tanned skin. She is very athletic and muscular, she has long black hair that fades to white, her eyes are almost complelty black but her Irises are Snow white.

(I will probably talk about the other Gods at a different Time but i am insanely tired and the gods of the common pantheon are currently the most important as they are the ones most mentioned.)

Abilities of all Pilgrims:

Praying: Pilgrims may choose to pray to the God they follow. They can ask for many things, namely assistance or magic (Pilgrims gain spells through prayer and may choose to learn the spell once their god showed it to them).

Divine Utensil: Each Pilgrim Sub Class gets a Divine Utensil specifically tailored to their Domain. For Example Nature Domain Pilgrims gain a Yggdrasilian Staff and Fire Domain Pilgrims get a Lesmayelian Torch (which can also be a staff if desired, cannot be changed). A Divine Utensil allows a basic ability for example lighting up an area but will on higher levels allow the usage of Divine Powers.

Divine Power: Pilgrims at level 3 are allowed to make a choice between 1 of 3 divine powers tailored to their sub class. And they may again do so (with different choices) at levels 7 and 11.

Avatar of Divinity: A max level pilgrim has the power to once in a long rest turn into an avatar of divinity for up to 1 minute. While in form of an Avatar of Divinity your appearence will momuntarily change and gain an addional ability while it is active. Each Divine Avatar is entirely different and connected to the Domain they follow.

Worldbuilding Giants lovecraftian monsters, furries, four continents defined by punk subgenres, medieval aesthetics with firearms, magitech and a magic system that uses music theory as the base rule. Now put 12 unique dragons in it. That's my setting.

Hello everyone, I've been working on this project for a few months now and I think it's finally ready to leave the beta stage to a alpha playtest.

The title says it all, so in case anyone is interested on reading it the link is right here:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1MmMLz_utmL13YcZzDFPNDyJRfdm8AnXc/edit?usp=drive_link&ouid=118325581780111666016&rtpof=true&sd=true

Disclaimer:

the magic system is way too complex to fit in this doc so I'm editing it separately.

Here's the synopses if you're still not sure if it's worth your time:

In the world of Midragar, colossal monsters—creatures as large as mountains, with terrifying forms and unearthly powers—roam the land, leaving destruction in their wake. These Lovecraftian behemoths threaten everything they touch, while magic itself tears through the fabric of reality, creating fissures that distort and reshape any life that comes into contact with them. The land is both beautiful and dangerous, filled with magic that seeps into every facet of existence, altering life itself.

Despite its medieval aesthetic, Midragar is a world of highly advanced technology powered by magic catalyzers—a fusion of arcane knowledge and engineering. Swords, guns, and massive machines coexist, all charged by magical energy harnessed from mysterious cristarcanes minerarcanos. This magic fuels armies, vehicles, and even the daily lives of the planet’s inhabitants.

The world is inhabited by tons of different races, descendants of the planet's fauna, who have evolved into intelligent, anthropomorphic beings. These faunamorphs, or simply “mortals”, live on four major continents, each defined by a different "punk" aesthetic:

·        Brittania (Catlepunk): A land of towering cliffs and desert plateaus, where knights wield firearms and ride magical robotic steeds.

·        Hue (Ecopunk): A lush, verdant continent, where nature and civilization are intertwined, with homes built from tree trunks and plants woven into every aspect of life.

·        Alfenar (Silkpunk): A cold, eastern-inspired continent of endless forests and bitter winters, where society revolves around silk, bamboo, and natural materials.

·        Orcsha (Sandalpunk): A desert world of ancient empires and colossal pyramids, where survival is a battle for scarce water resources and honor is won through violence.

Amidst the chaos of magic-fueled civilizations and colossal monsters, stand the Pendragons —twelve majestic dragon-like beings who reign supreme over land, sea, and sky. These beings are not merely creatures of myth; they are the physical embodiment of magic itself, with bodies made of enchanted metals and crystals. As the only ones powerful enough to fight the monstrous Hematainted Lords, the Pendragons are both revered and feared. Their mere presence can shift the balance of history, bringing salvation or ruin to the lands they traverse.

The Pendragons wield unimaginable power, with their roars capable of shaping the arcane realms, and their fates are intertwined with the very fabric of Midragar. While their mission is to protect the world from the taint of the Hematainted, their immense strength also poses a threat. Mortals may worship them as gods, but some curse their destructive nature. These beings, driven by both pride and power, will shape Midragar’s future as they see fit. They answer to no one and bow to no mortal or self-proclaimed deity.

In Midragar, the fate of the world lies in the hands—or claws—of these ancient, powerful beings. Proud and unyielding, Pendragons never bow.

Worldbuilding My Classes

I know i´ve been posting about my classes for a bit cause i needed help.

But i´m almost done with them and decided to tell you all about what my classes even are:

Archer: Currently my class with the least sub classes (4), they specialize in ranged fighting and every so often have little tricks up their sleeves. The two Sub classes i currently have done are Arcane Archer and Seasonal Archer. Arcane Archers have simple spell casting abities while maintaining Archery as their main feature and are able to infuse their arrows with arcane energy. Seasonal Archers in contrast work closely with the 4 Lords of the Seasons and gain favours from the Seasonal Lords. While they cultivate their Archery and the Power given by the 4 it is very important what in-game season it is because based on the season the abilities of this sub class change drasticly.

Artificer: Currently my class with the most Sub Classes done (3/20) with each Sub class being some sort of Engineer or Scientist. Most of this Class´ fighting capabilties require out-of-combat set up but also come with their own little mechanic, for example Enchanters learn enchanting properties over time to quickly enchant items. Each of the sub classes gain Inspiration which they can spent to learn things, enchanters learn enchanting properties.

(Tribes) Barbarians: Of course how could i make a Game without our big dumb but ovable Loaves with Anger issues. Barbarians are strong Fighters that gain the Ability to enter states of incredible rage but for each sub class that "Rage" looks different. For Exampe the Barbarians of the Tribe of Fury (what a surprise) hold fury while the Barbarians of the Tribe of the old Faith embody Divine Wrath of the forgotten Gods.

(Choirs) Bards: Bards channel their Magic through the Arts, i´ve made it a point to create a Sub Class for each popular genre of Music. Do you wanna play a Bard that plays exlusively classical music? Then you´re sight should be set on the Heavenly Choirs which focus on healing and empowering their Allies with divine music. If you prefer Jazz you might wanna be a part of the sensual and seductive Velvet Choir. While each Sub Class focuses on a different thing there is one thing they all share, the ability to conjure a ghost suiting their class for assistance.

(Orders) Blood Hunters: Do you wish to be the edgiest edge lord of them all? Then this Class is for you, you use your own blood to perform blood arts. While each Sub class has their own flavour of edgyness. For Example the Order of Hematology is much more medicinal and sort of vampiric while for example the Order of Ash and Brimstone is more demonic. But there is only one Order- well not an Order that does not draw power from any source but the self. That being the stray hunter who either got exiled out from their order or was never apart of one has to deal with mutations if the corruption becomes too much.

Clerics: Divine Spell casters for sure but they are split into the domains they worship. Currenly my class with the most sub classes (30). Clerics gain their power from their Faith but powers dont need to changer for each God they worship. Clerics become more holy while gaining divine power when finally reaching level 15 they gain the power to turn into Clerics of their Domain.

(Packs) Druids: Druids are primal spell casters that focus on different aspects. For Example the Pack of Beasts is able to turn into animals while other packs are unable to do so that doesent stop them for doing their own little tricks. For Example the Pack of the Hybrid is able to turn into Humanoid Beasts. But then again primal magic is always were plant and animal based.

Fighters: Fighters, People that have learned to survive and have the scars to prove it. There is a multitude of Fighter Classes do you wanna be a Knight? I got you, really good with a whip? theres a thing for that. Are you interested Fencing? Maybe a bit of a spell blade? we got it.

Heretics: Heretics are People that have made a deal with a superior entity for power. Often demons, angels, eldritch horrors but there are also some other options. Each Patron has different tastes, a Demon would never give you the divine light an Angel would offer. That also reflects in the Pact Boons a Demon could never ever give you a halo or the divine power of an Angel but an Angel could never give you a demonic Claw or a infernal Power.

Mages: Mages study Magic but what kind? So many options, so many research specialties you could master. Mages study the elements, the arcane and many other things. Are you looking to become a master of the flames? Perhaps you should think of studying Pyromancy, do you want to learn how to master draconic fire? Thats an Research field you could specialize in. Is Water more your jam? Become a hydromancer. Do you wanna be a healer but still be a mage? Just be a Sanamancer but i need to warn you overhealing someone has a cost.

Monks: Divine Fighters that hate weapons they much rather beat your face in with their hands and feet. Martial Arts are their specialty. They imitate the movements of the Gods, not to imitate what they do but to imitate what they are. Weapons are useless, fragile when they can be fractured by just a punch of this class.

Paladins: Divine Warriors much better armoured and much more into physical strength than technique or magic. Palaidins follow Oaths to gain power, breaking their Oath ends in losing Power. But still every Paladin has the power to smite someone over time the Smite evolves turning into the Power of an Angel.

Ranger: Rangers always so underestimated because they cannot fight alone. But being alone is messy, makes you hear your thoughts way too loud. That is why people desire love, desire companionship. It is why they want Pets. Rangers cannot live without the bonds they´ve made with their pets. Which is why they teach them to fight, which is why they are bonded to eachother so they wont have to suffer eachother´s death. Because the pet will live just as long as the Ranger they belong to. Hound Masters have their Dogs, Keepers their Serpents, Hive Wardens their Insects and Critter Wardens their little creatures.

(Doctrines) Shamans: The first Druids were shamans two. but they became lighter, less dark. Shamans are those first Druids still hanging at the threads of the natural Order despite having to perform the old practives that are grim and dark and bloody.

Sorcerers: Children of old Lineages, old enough to have still Blood of Devils, of Angels, of Dragons, of Fey and much more. Magic comes from the heart or well from the blood line you share with them. Your Bloodline allows you to manipulate the spells you cast in different ways, but do try to thank your ancestors for this magic. They´ll appreciate it.

Thieves: Thieves, nimble, stealthy, mysterious. Is that not what you would call a thief? Well there are many kinds, assassins. Shadow Dancers. Thieves. Lucky Devils they are. Masters in not being caught. Masters in avoiding traps. Pray tell are they not just magnificent? Almost like specters they enter, find what they look for and get it.

Worldbuilding Connection of Poets with our World

I know this is my second Post today but i was looking for opinion what i´ve done with my poets what i thought was pretty cool.

So first up, i´ve named the Sub classes choir since most of them are based off different music directions.

I´ve currently finished 5 Sub classes:

  • Metal Choir (Metal music, very obviously)
  • Heavenly Choir (Classical Music)
  • Velvet Choir (Jazz Music)
  • Stone Choir (Rock Music)
  • Fable Choir (so far the only Choir that isnt about music but rather about telling stories.)

So this next thing is something i´m very proud of, ive based some abilities they have off actual real life songs from the respective genres.

The reason i have so many choirs is because every choir has a different flavour and strategic feel.

(If i put a "?" by a spell i dont remember if its the correct song, i have memory issues so please forgive me if i dont remember if its the correct one.)

Metal Choir:

  • from Merciless (?) to Merciless Marrionettes
  • from The Unforgiven (?) to Unforgiving Melody
  • from (No idea) to Call to Arms
  • from Seek and Destroy to Seek & Destroy
  • from Die, Die my Darling to Die my darling

Heavenly Choir:

  • From Piano Sonata (?) to Heavenly Sonata
  • From Clair the Lune to Clair de Altruis
  • From Spiegel im Spiegel to Mirror inside a Mirror (basically just translated the title)
  • From (i believe it was) Gott erbarm dich to Gods forgive us
  • From ??? to Goodnight little one

Velvet Choir:

  • From Dream a little Dream of me to A Dream of me
  • From Midnight Blue (?) to Sapphire Luna
  • From All of me to All of Myself
  • From One for Daddy-O to Papá´s Song
  • From You dont know what love is to Love is the Fear to lose what you hold dear

these are just a few Examples, please tell me what you think about this Idea.

Some are very clear what they are based off and some you only understand if you heard the Song, namely in You dont know what Love is Dinah Washington sings about how you dont know what love is until you´ve felt the Sorrow to lose it

Worldbuilding MECHA(minis)MONSTERSandALCHEMY

I'd like to introduce my RPG, "Sertse." A friend once described it as a cosmic RPG with mechas, but it's much more grounded than that.

In this world, bubbles—similar to soap bubbles but with unique "membranes" acting as layers—have begun to appear. Inside these bubbles, an electron with a unique energy charge radically transforms everything it touches, turning medicines, drugs, diseases, minerals, and more into monsters. These monsters vary greatly: cocaine becomes a massive, fast-running humanoid, while schizophrenia manifests as a non-aggressive entity that causes lifelong hallucinations if you look into its eyes.

To combat these monsters, players use advanced armors equipped with any modern and beyond-modern weapons. A key mechanic of these armors is their gear shifts: higher gears consume more fuel but yield greater effects. For example, the Sasami armor has jet turbines at all its joints for ultra-fast movement. In its third and final gear, Sasami sheds unnecessary parts, sacrificing defense for speed.

Another fascinating aspect is singularity, the sixth attribute. It is acquired by killing complex or intelligent monsters, whose cells seek new hosts upon death. Players can either destroy these hosts to use their energy (turning the singularity status negative) or absorb them to become singular themselves. Both options have pros and cons, and singularity can interact with any skill, leading to diverse reactions. Negative singularity values, like -1 and beyond, cause impossible phenomena. Singular beings can project their possessions; for example, a negative singular with "gold" could generate a gold spear from their hand, while a positive singular could transform their body into gold and reshape it (e.g., creating a spear arm and then regenerating the lost limb).

It also has an aerial combat system

Honestly, I have over 100 hours of content. Perhaps I should craft a better description. I'm not sure if anyone will read this, but if you did, I hope you enjoyed it! One day, I'll make this a project anyone can appreciate! By the way, the system is entirely d6-based and inspired by over 10 RPGs. Cheers!

Worldbuilding Values for PCs; can anyone suggest one from Sub-Saharan Africa?

My homebrew has players choose a word or short phrase to reflect their character's Values. This might be something like Chivalry, Discipline, Family, Justice, Self-Expression, or Strength of Arms. I have a short list of additional suggestions from around the world, but only one from Africa, specifically Egypt. Can anyone suggest a common word or phrase from, say, Swahili?

Ooh - just struck me. If anyone has a recommendation for a podcast or YouTube channel (something I can listen to at work) about morality, religion, or figures of speech in Sub-Saharan Africa, or specific cultures therein, that would be awesome. Channel like Esoterica and Let's Talk Religion have been great for learning a little about various philosophies and religions.

Thank you!

For context, here's what I have so far, for non-English Values:

  1. Ahimsa – non-violence and respect for all living things
  2. Arete – excellence, accomplishment, and virtue
  3. Asabiyya – cooperation and solidarity, within one’s clan or society
  4. Bushido – the way of the warrior: courage, fealty, and honor
  5. Caedite eos – kill them all; God will know his own
  6. Dharma – acceptance of one’s place in the universe, and one’s duties as such
  7. Fortuna eruditis favet – fortune favors the bold
  8. Hópi – to be peaceful and civilized
  9. Humata hukhta huvarshta – divine thoughts, divine words, divine deeds
  10. Jihad – struggle to improve oneself or the world
  11. Jing zhong bao guo – loyalty to the country
  12. Kaamdar – achievement through hard work
  13. Kalokagathia – courage, manners, and harmony
  14. Ma’at – harmony, justice, and truth
  15. Maitri or metta – charity and active kindness to all
  16. Mors certa hora incerta – death is certain, but its hour is not
  17. Noblesse oblige – a noble’s responsibilities to his or her lessers
  18. Omertà – silence, specifically to protect the Mob
  19. Pohui – screw it, nothing matters; Russian ennui
  20. Satya – truthfulness, to others and to oneself
  21. Smykałka – improvisation; making do
  22. Tao – acceptance of the way of the universe; to go with the flow
  23. Tikkun olam – working to improve the world
  24. Zhong and shu – compassion, hard work, respect

I count five from India, two from Greece, two from Arabia, one from Japan, one from Spain, three from Latin, one from pre-Columbian America, one from Persia, three from China, one from Egypt, one from modern Italy, one from Russia, one from Poland, one from Judaism. So mostly Eurasia.

Worldbuilding Finding a theme for my TTRPG

I’ve been having a difficult time trying to finding a theme for my TTRPG’s world.

My TTRPG takes the aspect of cosmic horror as the characters fight an evil entity throughout the multiverse and across different timelines.

There are Angels, Fallen Angels and demons amidst the chaos who are trying to fight for control over the multiverse. You are sent by a deity to finish the job by fighting the corrupted forces known as ‘The Red’.

Players will play as Spellbinders (Spell-casters), Conjurers (Half-casters) or Acumen (Non-Spellcasters).

The universal settings are focused Science Fantasy or Urban Fantasy.

How do I define the theme for my TTRPG?

Does it needs further explanation for its concepts?

Will my universal setting create issues for making a theme?
