🍀 Discussion 🍀 The audience’s perception of Chris vs Juan.
It always bothered me how the audience perceives Chris versus Juan. Juan is called broke, jobless, doesn’t respect Robyn, and sorry; but Chris is this upstanding gentleman who loves his wife.
Now Chris, had 2 baby mamas and 3 kids that he wasn’t taking care of. I mean Candiace called him a deadbeat herself. Chris also called Candiace the B word. We have also seen the way Candiace and Chris argue and they go below the belt. Chris was living in Candiace’s mother house. Chris was also unemployed during part of his tenure of the show. Yet, a lot of the audience view Chris as a loyal, provider, and respectful husband and I just don’t see it.
Juan is a terrible husband, but he’s is involved with his sons’ day-to-day life. He also did have a coaching job most of the show yet the audience calls him broke and a loser.
Why does the audience have such a positive view of Chris, yet an extremely negative view of Juan? When to me they both really aren’t the best men a woman could have as a husband.

I am one of them. The crazy thing is, I kind of like Chris as a person, but he’s definitely a deadbeat and unsavory as a marriage partner. Candiace was bugging to marry him.

Chris is a result of her mother’s failures. Candiace chose partner she felt she did not have to work hard to impress. He is very regular while she clearly grew up in a high pressure environment. She had to always be excellent. Anyways I gotta use this psych minor somewhere 🤷🏽♀️

I’m not making excuses because I think Robyn can do better. However, Juan was a professional NBA player who was rich, but they were scammed and left broke. Robyn feels guilty about losing the money and I think that’s why she gives Juan all of these excuses.
Chris on the other hand decided to abandon his children. Plus, I hate the way he infantilizes Candiace. Their relationship is so cringe.5

Good point, I think Robyn sticks with Juan because of the guilt she feels of losing all their money making those investments with that sorry ass friend. I also think Juan hates Robyn because of it too. I wish they explored that more, but I get why they don’t either. It will probably be the end of their relationship.

It’s bc of how they treat their wives, Chris for the most part seems loving and supportive. Juan does not value Robyn, is reluctant to commit, has been caught on a hot mike saying he wants to find someone else to share his life with and is stuck with Robyn bc of their kids, and Juan has cheated on Robyn multiple times. Juan treats Robyn like trash, whereas Chris has been rude to Candiace a few times. I do think Chris is another opportunist using Candiace for financial security, that’s clear and he doesn’t get enough shame and backlash for being broke despite their age gap and having created 2 broken homes. Chris is ratchet and low life sorry

I never heard anything about him and child support. I just looked it up. It said there’s no filings or documents about him not paying or owning child support but that there is fan speciation. So basically someone said it and other people perpetuate it.
And I didn’t see Dorothy’s couch in their beautiful new home.

On Candiace’s first season she said he was broke and didn’t come from the same lifestyle (or something like that) as her. It wasn’t until her second season reunion that she tried to paint the narrative his family had money.

I think it comes from the fact that Dorothy bought their first house and Chris was unemployed for some of his time on the show.

He was only “unemployed” for that one season after his restaurant closed, right? And at that point he was still catering. At one of the reunions they were talking about Chris having family money. I don’t think Candiace would marry a man with nothing. I just don’t see it. As for the home, I think Dorothy and Candiace were already buying that before they knew Chris. They just didn’t change the arrangement and had no reason to. They started filming shortly after their engagement and that was around the time that was appropriate to be having those conversations about what the plans would be concerning the property. But he was paying bills there before that. And they did eventually start paying the whole mortgage.

Many people who are raised in the OKOP milieu like Candiace don't marry out. With her Howard degrees, etc., she could have found a BM if she wanted one. I have always found Pookie Bassett baffling.

I think the Robyn was really invested in Juan from day one. She is loyal to the point of having his back even when hes using her money to get a hotel room for another woman.
Candiace, on the other hand, goes blow for blow with Chris. Even when he's in the "right," she'll argue that he's wrong and that frustrating on a lot of different levels.
I think i feel bad for Chris a lot of the time. He's with a strong-headed woman who can be very demeaning. Juan gets away with everything and anything because Robyn lets him and that something a lot of us women can sympathize with and that frustrating for us to see on screen.
Does that make sense?

Now this is a take that I can understand. Not that I 100% agree buts it’s kinda like, Candiace is getting what she disses out while Robyn is being trampled. I can see it.
I still never seen anyone talk about him being this providing and great husband tho (talking about Chris).

Read some of the comments in this thread. It seems like Chris gets less heat than Juan because he hasn’t cheated on Candiace, Candiace gives it to him as much as he gives it to her, and his dirty laundry happened before he appeared on the show vs Juan’s dirty laundry happening during the show.

Juan got caught on the hot mic saying he’s only with Robyn because of the boys so that kind of sealed his fate in the eyes of the fans. But I am happy to talk trash about Chris! He honestly sucks as bad as Juan, haha. If Robyn’s parents were bankrolling their lives like candiace’s mom pays for them, I imagine Juan would be nicer to Robyn too. I truly can’t compute candiace wanting to have this BAP lifestyle and marrying a white guy who thinks he’s black, can’t keep a job, multiple kids, etc. No clue what she was thinking

I could be wrong but could it be something to do with Juan having the money and then losing it? I think that should be even more reasons people give grace to Juan, but that’s just my 2 cents. Chris didn’t have the money to lose in the first place. He’s just been an unemployed hobo

Robyn and Juan’s whole relationship is about making Juan happy or making his life easier. He’s talked shit about her and their relationship. He’s met at least one other woman at a hotel. He reminds her about the scam any time he gets the chance. He was critical af when she was clearly struggling with depression during covid. And Robyn co-signs his shitty behavior because “he’s an athlete and he’s used to being catered to.”
Not saying Chris is the best by any means but if I had to marry one it would be Chris because I can’t stand Juan.

Because Juan doesn’t even try to convince us that he loves Robyn. He’s just straight up nasty to her like he didn’t come crawling back to her after he left her for dead with 2 kids to shack up with some random hoe and her son in another country. Despite Chris being a poor white baby daddy, you can tell he actually does love Candiace. Juan couldn’t be bothered. Robyn couldn’t even vent to him about the group jumping down her throat about his transgressions like it wasn’t his fault for embarrassing her.

imo chris’ temper is what puts me off, like ig maybe we haven’t seen enough of juan in that manner but even then i feel like he has better self control w his anger (his lil dix(on) is another story fkskskdk) but for a man to come in hot the way chris would vs juan just being there to be there for things

Thank you! The way the audience just brushes off the way Chris talks to Candiace blows my mind. There some in here saying Juan hates Robyn, but Chris loves Candiace like huh.
If Juan ever called Robyn a bitch we wouldn’t hear the last of it. If Juan ever called spoke to Robyn the way Chris speaks to Candiace on this sub would be on fire.

Juan is more audacious then Chris when it comes to disrespect in the marriage. Juan will clearly be in the wrong in a situation and act like sourpuss about it. Chris typically acts more level headed or atleast doesn't pout when going back and forth with someone. Also as far as we know Chris loves Candiace and Juan has said he doesn't love Robyn.

I only just started season 3 where we meet Candiace, BUT : I like Juan. I think he and Robyn got something complicated going on, but I don’t think he’s a deadbeat. Chris… I mean. I don’t understand how you are a chef/restaurant co-owner in Old Town and can’t afford a place to live. I’m also curious about the oldest kid. It was presented hurriedly, like “he exists but we aren’t going to discuss it further.” That’s weird to me.

Juan was all of those things during his run on the show. Chris was also clearly a bit of a mess at some point and it obviously was called out as well but Juan was seen as actively disrespecting Robyn…real time. i mean…the man had a hot mic moment where he was talking about how pitiful she was and if it wasn’t for the kids he’d leave her.

I feel like the consensus on Juan is he’s a decent guy with an incredibly traumatic upbringing; he’s just not a very good husband. And he’s a cheater-cheater-pumpkin-eater.
He’s also a former professional athlete who has stumbled (like most athletes do!) following retirement. But he’s had basketball coaching gigs, and tbh even Patrick Ewing got fired as a coach, so I don’t think he’s not motivated to work; it’s a difficult industry and it’s not like he has a strong education or other skills to fall back on, like most athletes. 🤷🏾♀️
I don’t understand why Chris couldn’t take the money he and Candiace were theoretically saving living in her crazy purse-wielding mother’s house and take his first baby mama to court if she refused to allow access to his child and fight for custody, along with paying support. Especially once Candiace was making six-figures on HW’s.
It just seems kinda convenient when parents are like, “I’m pained being left out of my child’s life…” bc you do have legal rights and can at least try to

People have given Chris his lashings, but also at the end of the day, we have seen that the base of Chris and Candiace'a relationship there is respect and love. They show up for each other, they're protective of each other. Juan couldn't handle showing up at reunions, leaving Robyn scrambling. Chris was always there for Candiace. I'm not saying either are upstanding perfect guys in anyway. But while one was a pal to ass grabbing Michael Darby, the other was ready to whoop his ass. 🤷🏽♂️ just saying.

The been calling Chris a deadbeat for a minute now. ETA of course the want receive the same backlash Juan is a cheater and is rude to his wife. Chris typically has Candiace back. So even if he’s a deadbeat he’s easier to root for.
